I'd wait until something bad actually happens before you freak out. I mean, they may be rough, but they're people, they're not going to attack you for no reason. Just keep an eye on them.

That sounds nice. It's good that you get on with the travellers near you. I sometimes wonder what it'd be like to talk to them, but they're generally hostile if you try around here.

On the other hand, the people from the travelling fair that passes through a few times a year are brilliant. Funny as anything and they always have good stories to tell about people they meet on the job. But they don't really class themselves as gypsies or travellers, and they get really insulted if you lump them all together.

Alright, let me try and explain.

The big problem is crime and intimidation. I've lived within a mile of the local community all my life, and I dread the times when they try and pitch near to us. They carry illegal weapons and steal local livestock, and burglaries rocket. They shout abuse in the street, and if you confront them they're violent and usually end up vandalising your house in revenge. If they'd only be polite and considerate, then no one would care if they camped close by. But it is fact that every time they do, we end up unwilling to leave our own houses, scared of what they'll do next.

We end up fearing for our safety, and we really shouldn't have to live with it.

Well, depending on what they carry, it might not be too bad. If it's like automatic rifles, ok, that's bad. Everything else, ok, I'm starting to get the hate.

I dunno about automatic rifles but I've seen one guy wandering around with a shotgun

There's always been an encampment near where I live. I really couldn't think of an appropriate name.. stationary travellers? I remember them being quite hostile at the primary school I went to. We've had our car alloys stolen once and someone ran off with the front door of a shop, but I couldn't say it was them. I can imagine it would be a bit unsettling when they just setup on some land that isn't theirs, and it'd affect the community they've moved in to.

Edit: Wait no, are they alloys? I don't know, they're not necessary but it makes the wheels like shit without them.

Vandalism, stealing, pet theft, threat with weapons... it may be technically "racist" (which it isn't, because gypsies are not a race), but it keeps continuing, so people treat them differently.

OT: Safety precautions listed... but other than that, you should just be humane. I can't comment a whole lot on this, having 'zip' experience with Pikeys. Damn US ignorance! (Though I can say if I thought that the word ****** was something of a controversy here in the US, I can imagine the word Gypsy being much more of one there.

God I hate gypsys. One treid to nick one of our cats infront of me and my familys eyes.
We like our cats. My dad Was in the airforce. I have sharp teeth Gypsy ran off. Cat was happy.

Basically the same as everyone else, keep your good stuff locked away and leave them alone. If they become a genuine threat of some kind or actively start stealing your stuff call in the cops. Hopefully they'll move on before long.
