How is begging immoral?
When it becomes the prime lifestyle of dudes who could otherwise work for their sustenance, i'd pretty much call it immoral.
Bingo. The gypsies these guys are talking about are not the Romany ones you are probably thinking of, HG131- those guys are usually pretty cool. To put it in American terms, they're like if homeless people melded with the Mafia. They live in tight-knit groups, wander, and pretty much wreck any place they go. The "begging" described above in the garage anecdote? That's extortion- it basically translates to "give us your stuff, or else we will hurt you, and destroy your business." That is immoral. Even if it were just polite begging, doing just that and not contributing anything to society could very well be argued to be immoral, though that area is more gray. The gypsies that are causing the OP a problem are not whimsical nor kind, and they are not despised because of their race, but their actions. I know a former gypsy. She dropped out of that society and moved to the United States because of her son. She was almost certain that if they had stayed, he would be dead right now.

As for the OP, the only advice I can offer has pretty much already been said- keep your house locked, your possessions chained or inside, and don't let your animals out, if you have any. Better to have to clean up shit and piss then a corpse. Call the cops if they do anything even remotely illegal.

Lock up your daughter, lock up your wife.
Lock up your back door and run for your life.
The man is back in town.
So don't you mess around.
'Cause I'm TNT!

Hide your scissors, your guard dog won't stop them from sharpening them, if my grandpa's gypsy stories are right.

Friend of mine had a similar situation.

In the first couple of days his pets turned up dead, rubbish was dumped onto his property (we arn't talking crisp packets - we are talking burnt out household appliances and bags of human faeces), and his family was assaulted. His car went mysteriously missing.
The police were unable to do anything as any incursion onto the land claimed by the 'travellers' was met by organized violence.

My friend packed up his family and possessions and moved out of the property until the travellers were gone.
In the end the local council cut off water to the area and they travellers moved on to the next location.

When he came back his home had been burnt to the ground, and he claimed on the insurance.

Basically earlier today about 100 gypsies set up camp in the field behind my house. I'm scared.

So: What should I do if they come near me/to my house and do you have any stories involving Gypsies?
Get some of their tears in a vial. It can protect against AIDS

This maybe the most unusual problem I've ever heard
I say don't provoke them
Kind of hard to do if they come to your door and want to either permanently 'borrow' something of yours or if they offer you the choice of ''give us money to do paint your house/tarmac your drive/etc (which we won't do and you don't want in the first place) and if you refuse expect us to half do it and then extort the money with threats of violence''.

My advice is: get out now

In case anyone has the delusion that ''gypsy'' equals ''loveable rogue with painted wooden caravan and horses and distinct culture'' - that is as true as ''21st century somali pirate'' equals ''Jack Sparrow''.

Now I have no problem with the Romani people - but I don't think there are 100 of those camped outside the OPs house.

i seriously cant believe the hate in this thread. if they are actually romany, then go introduce yourself, be friendly
Being partly Romani myself, I must admit that my hackles went up when I saw the thread title.

But it seems that the OP is talking about your basic garden-variety transients as opposed to any specific ethnicity or culture. (Even if the terminology that was used is confusing and potentially misleading.)

That said: call the authorities, keep all valuables under lock and key, and be wary.

No, they'll just ask you for stuff and if you refuse they'll threaten to break your legs.

Am I the only one confused by the rampant racism in this thread? Just ignore them.
You two are both American, maybe you've got a different type of gypsy in mind. Obviously these aren't Romany Gypsies, they're basically just the British equivalent of rednecks.

OT: My step dad runs his own garage, but rents it inside a yard owned by people that run a transport thing for school kids and stuff. There's also another guy that rents a garage on the other side of the yard.

Now, the guy who runs the other garage sometimes gets gypsies coming over to him asking him to "borrow" stuff. One time they asked him to borrow something (a mechanical wire thing to put on the car to pull other cars out of ditches or something I think) and he lent it too them.

Naturally, they came back another time asking them to borrow it. This time he said no - not wanting to get into a thing where he just lends it to them all the time, as he has it in the first place because he needs to use it - and the gypsy left. A few hours later, 2 younger guys came along saying he'd seriously upset their Dad. To sum it up, they then strongly implied that unless he gave them what they wanted they'd burn his garage down.

Anyway, they're probably not allowed to be there so call the police and they should move them on. Don't fucking lend them anything though.
Ok, so let me get this straight. They're rednecks who move around alot? From the way you guys are acting they seem much worse. Most rednecks here at least tend to be harmless if you leave them alone. Also, so, he's mean to them after they returned it to him, not violating his trust? Sounds like he got what he deserved. No need to be a douchebag to people.
gypsys are travelling people. this presents a problem unto itself. if you move around constantly you have no source of income, in this developed world food is hard to find legally (and yes i say find because they have no money to buy) and you have no attachment to anything around you. all you have are the people around you to hold yourself up. this tight-knit group becomes intencly loyal to eachother, making situatuions escalate dramatically. the only way they acn support themselve is through trade (and when your constantly on the move having anything worth selling, again legally, so they try to rip you off in creative way, which is where the term gyp'ed came from). gypsys are also known for teaching distrust in any outsiders (possibly they trust other tribes of gypsys i dont know. their moving lifestyle promotes trust in likeminded people, but knowing what they do themselves leads to knowing what other people could do, leading to distrust of those other people.
finally, gypsys are either a race or a culture, depending on the teachings of a specific tribe. some tribes demonize outsiders and therefore only allow breeding with other gypsys, thus creating a race. this point of view is not with all gypsys, in which case it is a culture
spelling errors i know i dont care

It's too dangerous to go alone, take this with you!

lol, but in all seriousness, like everyone else here says, leave them alone, and if they try anything on you or the community or if something is going to/or has happened, call the police.
Also, if they try to curse you, simply go to a friend, put your thumbs and pointer fingers together and ask him to do a chopping motion on it while saying "Evil be gone!"
Usually works...

But if fifty bus drivers are hanging around out the back of your house and a heap of your stuff goes missing its reasonable to hold a grudge against that group of bus drivers and get nervous the next time unusual numbers of them are around.
That particular group of individuals, sure.
But not the whole damn load of people, not the entire "category".
