I guess I don't understand why these guys are considered the good guys and Sony is evil? Because Sony is big and suing people, so they must be evil and it is geo right to be able to hack shit and post how to hack it online, therefore he is a hero. And now Anonymous and some sort of lolcat hackers are taking up arms against Sony for suing a fellow hacker? How is the honorable? That seems like terrorism. It just seems to me that everyone in this situation has dirty hands.
I don't know, maybe I'm missing something.
GeoHot didn't hack nor post how to hack the PSN online, he just hacked the PS3 into providing the Other OS option (which btw, Sony initially advertised for it's product). He's done what thousands of modders do all the time and are praised for and you might have noticed Microsoft even being helpful and giving him a W7 phone to work with and unlock.
He's viewed as a "hero" (not really, but just using your words), because a bought product is something that should belong to the buyer and not the company that took your money for it. As it is the buyer's, the same way you can mod your car after you buy one, you should be able to mod your PS3 as well (you can see some amazing stuff coming out of Kinect modding, which I think I can safely say everyone on Escapist cheered on at one point or another, when they presented something amazing).
Sony however, is pulling the shit many companies do these days (closest to my memory being WoW, who's ToS is an outrage) and saying that for forking over the money to them, they still retain all the rights to your product and can tell you what you can and cannot do with it. It's basically like someone sold you a car and told you "guess what, if you change the ash tray, we get to sue your ass". It's not even a denial of support and service, which are reasonable, if not supportive, it's literally illegal to mod the damn thing.
Now, Sony on the other hand, turned out to be stupid enough to leave a security hole in the client, and after that came out saying "well, it's not supposed to be hacked, so we don't need to protect it!". Worst excuse I've heard to date and just a finger point at someone other than themselves for anyone stupid enough to buy into it. Heads up, a guy who wants to hack your security system doesn't give half a shit about what you do or don't allow to be done with your console. And a guy capable of hacking your security system is well capable of unlocking PS3 with or without the help of George Hotz.
As for the hackers who've fucked PSN over, no one actually views them as "heroes" or anything of the sort. People are merely enjoying the fact Sony's getting bent over. Yeah, it sucks for the users and overall, the whole thing is bad because the users are getting shafted. It's kinda like 9/11. It's not a good thing cause innocents paid for it, but you still enjoy seeing US as a state get shafted and put into place.
