Kid Icarus: Uprising doesn't need the stand. In fact, most people agree that it's more comfortable to play WITHOUT it.
The 3DS eShop features a Virtual Console for handheld games (ex. Game Boy Color, Sega Game Gear, et cetera) as well as a slew of original titles. I highly recommend Pushmo, Colors 3D, Flipnote Studio (obviously), Super Mario Land, Kirby's Dream Land (the first Kirby game ever!), and even Sakura Samurai is worth the price for a couple days worth of very good, challenging fun. Don't get Mutant Mudds, though, unless you have a hankering for a PAINFULLY basic platformer.
Starting with the release of NSMB2, you'll also be able to download entire 3DS retail titles through the eShop, but only ones that are published by Nintendo. Obviously, you also need a huge SD card if you plan to make use of that feature.
One more thing: if you own a home console, get Rayman Origins for that instead of the 3DS. Not only does the game just look better on a larger screen, but the 3DS version doesn't have Origins' much-lauded cooperative multiplayer.
