I think my total was around 65 hours but I spent far FAR too long at the golden saucer doing an awful lot of nothing....loved every second though :D

I've played from start to end about there times, I think he first time the clock stopped counting on all 9s. Funny thing is I only vaguely liked the game. I played it mostly to try to 'get it' but I never did. I'm not a shallow gamer by any stretch (greatest RPG IMO is a tie between the Ultima 7's and Fallouts 1 or 2) but if the music and most especially the visuals hadn't been so sill and terrible (respectively) I might no have loathed it as much.

I digress.

I played he game for more hours than it could count, thrice over, but I'm a completionistic (that a word?) player and was deeply motivated to attempt to love the game as much as I had earlier titles in the series.

I can probably get it done in about 50-55 hours if I sped through and didn't stop to enjoy it and probably as low as 45 hours if I go all bare-bones speedrunning. But I usually take my time, enjoy life, train like a demon, etc. so I've eclipsed 100 hours each playthrough.

Welcome to the Escapist! There's some punch and pie on the table and the rules are thumbtacked to the door. Hope you enjoy it here!

Can somebody tell me why it's great? I downloaded it recently aswell but to my PS3 and I have just got off the train to blow the second thing up and I have yet to be anything but annoyed by it.
Give it a chance. You've only just started. You haven't even met the true antagonist yet.
So far, i am 6 hours into it, and have yet to see a single reason it has been hailed as the best game of all time.

Either you've really wasted some time or are exaggerating more than a little if it took you 6 hours to reach the second reactor. The part that is a drag actually comes after that (too much trivial stuff in the slums), but I recall the "finale" for the prologue being quite redeeming.

Honestly, you've only at the beginning the game when you get to the world map the first time. The game could have cut some content near the beginning, but honestly: use a bit patience.

Hmm..

50 or so hours my first time.

Though about 1/4th of that was probably grinding.

I think I clocked in around 40 hours when I beat it. I had done some of the extra stuff (golden chocobo, knights of the round) but not too much (I think Cloud was only level 73, I didn't have anyone but Cloud's ultimate weapon... I dunno, I'm sure there's a whole legion of things I didn't do).

'98 to '03. I know that seems to be an exorbitant amount of time but I was always busy. Ended up fighting desperately at like Level 70 against the last one. I got so frustrated I lost my disks, I was pissed when my older bro broke the 3rd disk and I had to buy a $7 open copy from EB, which ended up being like a year later.

Calling it the best game of all time might be an overstatement, but depending on how far you have gotten on those 6 hours, I'll say "It gets better".

Of course, there's the matter of taste. It might just be that the game isn't you.

The game introduced 3D in games.

That is why the game is "the best ever".
Didn't say it's the best game ever, nor should you play it with that high expectations. Will ruin it for sure.

In this thread, a bunch of people who haven't touched FFVII in years who forgot how long it takes to get everything.

If you claim to have gotten everything in any time less than 80, you're lying through your teeth, as that would imply that you:

Got all the weapons for each character
Beat the two extras.
Cleared the game normally.
Obtained all the materia (a few that can only be obtained at the Golden Saucer and are completely random in coming up)
Mastered all said-materia
Got all the level 4s (perhaps excluding Aeris/Aerith and if you can get that you're a trooper)

Beating the game doesn't take up that much time (hell, Chocobo breeding, although a pain, isn't as long a process as people make it out to be). It's everything else that takes an eternity. I would say that the ratio of plot and extras is just big, if not, LARGER than Tales of Vesperia or Disgaea.

The game itself is pretty short (especially compared to today's RPGs) as long as you don't grind to the point of overkill, but it's doing everything else that will take up your time, and if all you're interested is a straight-forward Disc 1 to Disc 3 completion, why even bother?

when I was ... 7? 8? 9?
