as the title says, I just got Oblivion GOTY edition
so far it's quite pretty, although really, its awful combat is only matched by the animations and JESUS FUCK STOP ZOOMING ON THE FACES LIKE THAT
so the point of this thread would be, are there any mods you suggest me get?

also it's utterly impossible to make a relatively decent-looking character at all

Reall what were you expecting . I mean seriously . You genuinly sound surprise . Were you living under a rock? At least you had the sense to buy it on PC , because if not you wouldn't even have mods to make the game better .

I personally played through the unmodded game and found itto be pretty fun , but modded is amazing.

Yeah the character models in the base game are pudding people.
With one face texture slapped on the front.

I remember loving this game to death when I used to play it.

Looking back though, the character models were pretty damn ugly (minus the argonians, who I thought looked cool) and the voice acting was kinda bad.

Beyond that though, I still have some fond memories of that game.

no, I knew exactly what I was getting myself into, but I didn't think it would be this bad =P
thought it'd be around Fallout 3's level, despite that it came before Fallout 3

on a side note, why is the world map so god damn tiny

My god, do you live in Eastern Europe? (Euro Trip joke). Dude don't do mods.. play that game as it was intended first.. mods should strictly be for people who are boring or are really into playing with themselves. (I totally mean gaming wise, I swear).

Nah, I am like you. I really didn't like much about the game but kept playing because everyone kept praising it. Figured it might get better until I just couldn't take it anymore. I didn't like the models, the voice acting, the dialogue, the writing, the exploration was cool until you went into a new dungeon and recognized it, auto leveling on everything (defeating the purpose of levels and sometimes serving the purpose of actually deleveling you). The combat was alright after having played Morrowind for me. I say if you have played it and don't like what you see, jump into mods as fast as you can. It doesn't improve.

well I play a lot of Daggerfall, so samey-looking dungeons aren't much of a problem =P
it does surprise me, though, how worthless all my weapons are
so far the only thing I could use to get somewhere was the bow, and even then the range is ass
that's what I get for choosing a thief, I suppose

Disregard this, game is better with mods and as long as you're not stupid with them (IE, overpower yourself) you won't miss out on anything.

Good. Now put it on the shelf and go install Morrowind. Hell, Daggerfall and Arena are free.
This fine Sir understands it. Morrowind is the way to go.

I did give it a try
worst game I have ever played*
might give it another try, but not anytime soon

*I measure my games in how much fun I had with them, not their quality, and Morrowind was boring, dull and exasperating

I play(ed) it on xbox. Love it. Don't see why everybody complains about the combat, it's fine not great though.

One of my favourite games ever as a matter of fact...Borderlands 2 will change that ;)

You are joking, right? I mean, I know you are, but I'm asking about the part about playing vanilla. The game is horrible. I was several hours into the game, I just ran off crying to TES Nexus because of how the game played as intended. I tried to play "as intended", I really did. I couldn't though.

If you are boring, you'll play vanilla, because there is nothing exciting in the game. Well, I'll give it the DLCs and the Dark Brotherhood missions but pretty much the rest is bland and unimpressive.

Forget the vanilla game. Just worry about Shivering Isles (I've heard it's excellent, although I've never gotten around to playing it myself) and Nehrim. Nehrim is one of my all time favorite games, and it's a free mod. It fixes just about all of the problems with Oblivion (save for the combat, which is still kind of shitty), and is a far, far more worthwhile experience.

I also want to add that Morrowind is a great game, but it's absolutely loaded with flaws (many can be fixed, or at least lessened, with mods), and is extraordinarily difficult to get into. If you don't know exactly what you're getting into when you start playing it, it will seem like the worst game ever. Even if you know what to expect, it will probably suck until you figure out what's going on and get your athletics to the point that you're not running at two miles an hour. I would still recommend it, but, like I said, you have to know what you're getting into.

If you want it to look better get 'All Natural Weather' and 'Qarl's texture pack' makes almost everything look better and it's more atmospheric.

Played it on Xbox 360, found no fault in it whatsoever.
Enjoyed it, I still do.

Mods are for people without any imagination.
