So I went to a strip club the other day...

As a feminist, I'm never stepping foot in one of those places. That is to say, as someone with a basic respect for women.
I suppose you never buy video games, either? I mean, the treatment of women in almost all video games is absolutely awful.
Excellent point. Maybe that should be addressed some time by these knights of chaste valour.

I have never been to a strip club, and I'm not actively looking for one to go to. I wouldn't object to visiting one once, with a bunch of friends of course. And when there's a occasion to go to such a venue.

Also to all those saying that a majority of the strippers may very well be supporting bad habits, or are just in it because they desperately need the money; I agree. There are more than likely a lot of people in this business just for the money. But the same thing can be said about pretty much every desk job, and certainly the whole fast food/waiting business.
Also I have a feeling you can pick out the girls who are in it for these reasons quite well.

PS: Anyone know a waiter/waitress/gopher-paper pusher who enjoys their job? If not, strippers in general are still enjoying their work more. And I think that's what matters in your chosen career.

The first time I went to a strip club, I felt like a huge pervert. After a while of watching and talking with the girls, I realized it was just a bunch of people having a good time and began to enjoy myself. I've been to a few since, though not frequently. I know that some dancers hate what they do but they've been the exception in my experience. I've also found as a general rule that if the girls aren't having fun then you're not having fun.

Well I'd say they're not good for some men as well tho' I support the establishment. Like all good things, people sensitive to vices shouldn't go there.
I can agree, but that's not what Thaius wrote.

I'm reacting to the "It has a bad influence on the men who are in them" wording.
It's a vastly generalizing statement that is completely unfounded.

A real exchange:

Me: "I'm eighteen years old today!"

Coworkers: "STRIP CLUB!"

Me: "Is that all you guys think about?"

Them: "YES!"

Me:

No. I don't ever plan to go.

Haha! Well-played. I really couldn't have (and didn't) put it as well as you just did!

Well I don't need to as I have a wife, but it is somewhat stupid to say it demeans women. The women get to work for about five hours a night and quite often earn more than I did at my last minimum wage job!

There is a song called "No answer for a dancer" by Consolidated go away and listen to that, it actually encapsulates this entire threads debate into a darn catchy tune.

If the club is clean and the girls are safe and protected I honestly see no problems with this, certainly better than gutting fish for a living.

Also many years ago I knew a girl who worked as a stripper she now has a Masters degree and is about to enter the law profession, all paid for by Lap dancing"

Maybe you could give us your take on the matter? I mean we can discuss this while going round in circles all we want but since none of us have any real insight into the whole thing, this thread's hardly going anywhere.

Nah, not my scene at all. I prefer home parties, I wouldn't be able to relax or anything at a strip club, I'd just be constantly on edge.
Strip clubs just feel... weird to a doesn't-talk-much-to-people-he's-never-met-before kind of guy like me.

I went once, it was a very awkward experience, I'd rather not do it again.

I don't understand strip clubs at all.

There are better ways of having fun with your mates and there are better ways of getting your sexual jollies. So what's the point?

I agree about her insight obviously.

But I think the thread went about where it should have.

Some people enjoy it. Some people would rather not partake. Others have assumptions thinking it's a wild no holds barred orgy! Others think it's awful for various reasons. Tis humans.

At least it isn't so circular of an argument. If a buddy of mine said "I don't think I'd like to go." I'd leave it at that.
The problem is most people have been responding to one girl's narrow-minded view of strippers who has quit the field at the end of page one. Since none of us are strippers we can say all we like about how they view their profession but we're still not credible sources.

I do agree this thread has pretty much covered all the bases, and is not a complete circle jerk.

Aw cute! Someone hasn't learned about the powerful influence of money in the free market! /tickle
Gee thanks, Hubert.
I still fail to see how the fact that more money equals more money renders my point invalid.

Nobody is forcing anyone to become strippers. From my own experience, it's women and men who are quite narcissistic, or getting there, who love the way they look and the attention they get from it.
Strippers make $50,000 a year almost as a baseline. A full-time minimum wage job pays ~$15,000 a year. Even stepping up from the minimum wage, with some type of non-technical four year degree, you'll be hard pressed to find a job with a starting annual salary in excess of $30,000.

If you don't recognize the enormous financial pressure at work here, I don't know what to tell you.

Factor in young children or college tuition, and sometimes these women don't have much of a choice; the difference in quality of life is so extreme that it can easily corrode, override, or otherwise influence their personal morals. These pressures act on an almost biological level, preying on desires for security and even our base survival instinct.

There are definitely women who love to strip and wouldn't do anything else for a living. There are far more who entered the profession, and remain there, for purely financial reasons. They would do anything else if they could, but they put on a smile and try to convince themselves that it's good work because it's the extreme path of least resistance - as society at large has defined things.

Eh.... apart from the caning and the ice cubes thing (whatever floats your boat, man)

That sounds like a good night out!

Shame my friends are too lame to think of doing that for my birthday.
I'm just curious, really.

I'm not interested in the sleazier joints though.... I'd feel like I needed a shower after being in a dodgy place.
I would, however, like to go a classier place like Secrets...

Yeah man, I've been to the peelers. Not really my scene, but I had loads of fun with my friends. You know, having a few drinks, hooting and hollering at the girls. I fail to see what was so degrading though, because it was me and the guys leaving with blue balls and empty wallets. Do you know how hard I god damn work every week to get what those dames earn in a night!! So I'm not only objectifying them I'm also resenting them.

No. It's definately not my cup o' tea. Strippers, sluts and hookers are things I wouldn't even want to be near with a 10 foot pole. If they want to live that lifestyle, fine by me, but I'm sure as hell not gonna be anywhere close to them. It's just that I find it disgusting, immoral and unclean. Call me whatever the heck you want, but this is my personal opinion. I'm sorry if anyone finds this offending, and once again, this is just my personal opinion. =/
