I don't make symbolic pointless gestures then go back to a resource-wasting lifestyle while thinking I've saved the planet because I used an organic recyclable for one day out of my life. I find real ways to reduce my carbon footprint such as not owning a car, only using climate control when I'm either freezing or boiling, not using things like bottled water and overpackaged and overprocessed stuff (I'm down to only needing to take out the trash about every five days) and other stuff that legitimately reduces the amount of the Earth's resources I have to personally use.
So if I hate eco-wackos so much, why the conscientious environmentalism in my personal life? Simple. Resources cost money and I'm a cheapskate. My friend Mike, the most liberal person I can tolerate (and he's pretty left-wing, having lived in San Francisco for a couple years), once said to me, exasperated, "I go to rallies and blog about Peak Oil and yet you're a right-wing conservative with a smaller carbon footprint than me. How the hell does that happen?"
