God made dinosaurs, God destroyed dinosaurs, God made Man, Man destroyed God, Man made dinosaurs.

I don't believe in God, religion, higher powers, afterlife or anything like that. It's just us and when we die, thats it.

Religion keeps people in check, a lot like the law. Religion forces people to be nice to everyone, regardless of race, etc. If no one believed in religion, or did not have faith in higher powers then the world would be a much darker place for people to live in.

To be honest I already hate 99% of the worlds population and if I had the chance I would actually destroy the world. If only I can get my hands on a nuke.

I don't think it needs debating to be honest, you're just going to upset the religious people on here and if you have an opinion on religion let's face it, you're going to be offending someone.

Excuse me but...what? It isn't about subtlety I'd say, but rather doing it in a polite manner, wouldn't you agree? If you want to figure out where people stand it is okay however you decide to express yourself as long as you do it with no ill intent.

If people get worked up and offended with this, then too bad, but that was never my intent and they need to grow up. This isn't kindergarten.

I'd have to agree that without religion those who depended on the comfort of an afterlife or a God playing divine-super-nanny would either go insane, become depressed or incredibly agressive. At least, at first.

Eventually the shock of realising their entire lives have been based on a lie would die down into a gentle numbness. Until the next generation takes over that would be more used to the idea. But I think even if people stop believing in a God, the organisations themselves will still exist and they would differ on some key ideals. Even without a God we would still find something to stupidly fight each other over.

The south park episode "go god go part XII" demonstrated this. If we're not fighting over God, we're fighting over race. If we're not fighting over race, we're fighting over resources and land. If we're not fighting over resources, we're fighting over how our names are different and which one is best.

Humans are such stupid creatures I honestly find myself wishing I wasn't one.

I feel like if I reply within topic, I'll have helped pull the flame grenade pin out just a little farther.

and nor has anyone else...
the law and morals would stop people. You don't need religion at all.

We'll be fighting over something else.
I don't think our societies will suddenly break down, though, as most developed nations aren't based on religion today, anyway.

Im going to go make a post about how Gay Marriage is bad for society but then say I dont want to start a debate about gay marriage and homosexuality...

...seriously though. There is a God, Heaven and Hell are real places (not android hell though contrary to what they tell you in Portal), and you are wasting your time trying to empirically prove or disprove any of those claims.

That should (but wont) put to rest any future religious debates.

in my opinion it would get rid of religious wars and make the world a bit better, but without something to believe in, some people may get depreessed and listless, because a higher power is something to try to emulate. but if those people look at leaders like Gandhi and MLK they will realize that those are the people we should try to be like.

Also, I have a question of what country would be "Hit" Hardest....
Hmm... I would guess one of the Middle Eastern nations, since many of their governments are very centered on religion. They'd have to deal with the societal implications of the revelation and try to hold their country together at the same time.

I tend to not have faith in the goodness of humanity, and from what I've heard the only thing stopping most of humanity from going on a killing rampage is having something to believe in.

Realistically, without religion people would devote themselves to environmentalism or socialism or some other dogmatic political ideology. Or possibly an atheistic spiritual belief, like paganism or secular humanism.

Okay for the record

The stuff terrorist are doing claiming it is for Allah or Muhammad or whatever does not count as religious war. The terrorist is fighting the Government. It is 1 political group vs a different 1. Just because they use Islam as a way to gain recruits doesn't mean there fighting to spread or preserve Islam. They are fighting for selfish greed

Im a history major and someday when I find the time I want to look through history and try and see how things would have turned out without religion's influence, I havnt gotten far past Rome and let me tell you, it aint pretty.

The fact of the matter is, religion is just one of many things that people can use as an excuse for conflict, so getting rid of religion will not get rid of conflict it will only change people's excuse.

I agree with the later part. I think morals and guilt would stop people from raping their sisters and eating babies. It doesn't habe to be in the ten comandments!

Also,
Really!! Then why didn't we all ask you all along. [/sarcasm]

Please don't fill this forum with hatred and ignorance. You cannot tell me what I belive is wrong and vice versa. Don't be a dick

As the evil person I am I would laugh as society crashed down, not caring about knowing that god didn't excist (I've known that since i was very small.). Then I would go out and loot and kill people. Embrace Anarchy.

i think you're forgetting that the reason we needed the cushion of religion for so long was because we had no other way of explaining things. now that we know most of our traditional views are wrong, it's become much easier to step away from religion.

and i don't know any atheists that have broken down because of their beliefs. i do know christians who have though.

either way, organised religion will most probably always exist, no matter how illogical. i mean, the 3 abrahamic religions are still going strong today. and if they did all disappear, you can still believe in an afterlife without a religion. i know people who do, they're called theists.

the pope would be pretty fu**ing embarrassed and a lot of terrorist organizations would become racist since they can't blame religion anymore.

Seconded.

Also, on the main topic of this thread - you'd be surprised how many religious people don't avoid whatever's against their religion because they're afraid of whatever version of hell their faith has. Scratch that, that's an awful sentence. I'll try to put it in a simpler way.

There are a lot of religious people who don't do things because they are told to do so by the creed they belong to. Quite the contrary in fact, many belong to a particular religion because it fits their worldview. So, if everyone suddenly lost the ability to believe in any form of divine, religious people would not go on a wild rampage because they aren't be afraid of hell anymore. They would retain their morals, and pass them on to their children, and so on, and so forth.
