To make it short, Zenimax Media has registered a trademark for a film called 'Oblivion', most likely a remake of the game in movie form.

So, what do you guys think of the subject? I, for one, am worried that the film may portray the game in a negative light, as has happened with so many Game-based movies in the past. What are your thoughts on this?

I wouldn't want an Oblivion movie, as everything that I looooove about oblivion (just exploring the countryside, probing the NPC AI with random methods, being able to decide "maybe I'd rather not do that and just do this for the hell of it") would translate horribly into a movie.

That's what I was thinking. Oblivion is an RPG, meaning that there is much more to it than the main story. Most of this would be lost in the creation of the 1.5-3 hour film.

Meh, it'll probably just be some LOTR wannabe clone on par with all those "original movies" the syfy/sci-fi/whatever channel is so fond of making. Could be good for a laugh, but I just dont think that Oblivion is the kind of licence that'll finally give us a good video game movie (I havent seen the Prince of Persia one so I cant comment on that)

It would be funny if it the protagonist forgot about the daedra and was off becoming the leader of all the guilds while the capital was overrun. I would pay money to see a parody like that.

How can they just make an Elder Scrolls Oblivion movie? That is the fourth game in the series. They would have to start with the first game.

Oblivion should not become a movie. Hollywood will just ruin it like they have with every other video game film.

If it follows my playing experience, it will just be two hours of someone looking in barrels and trying to pick pocket other people.

"Please, help us! The demons are becoming more powerful every day, and we don't know why!"
"Not right now, busy buying alchemy ingredients to make fatigue potions. Look, I leveled up again, man I'm good! I'll be strong enough to beat those scamps in no time!"
"Scamps, what are you talking abo-*spider daedra'd*

No they wouldn't?

The games have little to do with each other except for background and lore.
The storylines are unrelated.

"You really don't need to know anything about the previous Elder Scroll games to dive right into this one"
Greg Kasavin

I think the same can be said of the film. But I see your point.

I sure hope they don't use the story of TES IV.
Just make a movie about some random character with a suggestive name that spends two hours dicking around in dungeons and checking every damn container exploring.
Or they could just not make a movie about an open-world game because it's a terrible idea.

Good luck dealing with the whole 'four races of humans' thing. Could be more than a little un-PC.

"Send in the Redguard! He should be able run quickly and fight well with his longsword".
"No, I think we need someone articulate to negotiate with the enemy instead, tell the Imperial to go"

There is a subtle, awkward racism to the Elder Scrolls games that a mainstream audience might not receive well.
Remember Watto, from Star Wars: The Phantom Menace? I could be wrong, but Star Wars fans and nerds in general (myself included) did not, like the majority of the viewing public, see him as a space jew [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watto#Reception]. Mainstream audiences have different perspectives is all, and sometimes what appeared as totally harmless, is from another angle really really objectionable.

In any case, I don't think the game would translate very well into a film.
