Yeah, if you don't even bother to vote, then you forfeit the right to complain about the outcome.

Don't get me wrong, I understand, I feel like my vote is meaningless. But you know what I did yesterday? Even though I was busy as hell, I made the time to vote. This isn't in the context I normally use this phrase, but I feel it still applies: put up, or shut up.
Listen to George Carlin for a well reasoned argument about why people who DO vote have no right to complain.

Not to mention that I think once weed becomes legal, its only so long before some other drug gets legalized as well. Then it becomes one big downward spiral.
Alcohol and nicotine, along with the illegal status of marijuana, basically makes this argument invalid.

I personally don't care. The only real difference is that the government of California still don't get any tax revenues from weed, so they're going to have to fire several thousand more people.

Sorry fellow Californians, Marijuana is STILL illegal
Proposition 19
No 3,826,487 53.8%
Yes 3,297,590 46.2%

Total votes 7124077

i guess California is still as ass-backwards as ever, especially since it was SHOWN that this would generate tax revenue for the government that they could have given to schools or to fixing roads.

this is why i don't vote, the masses are stupid and to vote against them is stupider

EDIT: Proof that it would not have made a difference if I voted - http://www.sos.ca.gov/contest_summary.pdf

97% of people voted, so even if EVERYONE in california voted, it still would not have gone through, because the majority won by more than 7%.
lol, it's not 97% of people who voted that's % reported, different stat, sorry kid, you and 825897 other people were too busy lighting up to help out the cause.

Em if you check what you posted there's 17 million people there.... it's just the 1 is typoed as an I :-/

Which leaves 10.1 million votes unaccounted for...

Well, it didn't go through, but it got pretty close to a 50/50 split, which is nothing to sniff at really. I can't see the smaller percentage getting any smaller.

Actually not voting DOES have a point. Just ask George Carlin:

So you didn't vote, but you're complaining about the outcome? You realize if you DID vote you could have made a difference, and I can guarantee the people who fall into the "I don't vote" category is huge. People who don't vote shouldn't complain about the outcome. You didn't do your part to make a difference, or even attempt to, so why should you be bothered about how it went?
^This

If you don't vote, you have no right to complain and should suck it up as a consequence of your inactivity and lethargic ways.

Even if one single vote doesn't actually matter, you and every other person who is politically apathetic needs to rethink what voting really is. I live in a Conservative-as-Hell town, and no matter how many times I vote Liberal, I can pretty much guarantee that the MP elected will be Conservative, so why do I still vote? I vote because I have the freedom to do so, I vote because thousands of Canadians gave their lives so that I could live in a world where people have liberty. Freedom should never be taken for granted, no matter how ridiculously one-sided an election might be.

I think it's a good thing. Due to my lack of experience in the big, wide world, I don't like the idea of drugs being legal. I think we should make stuff like smoking and drinking illegal instead of making some less dangerous stuff legal. Just because it's not as harmful doesn't exactly make it good for you, does it?

+1, democracy only really works when every voice is heard. With such low voter turn outs only the people who REALLY want their vote counted get counted and people who are quietly for/against something don't count for anything.

That, sir, is a ridiculous notion. Ideas need representation, and if you don't resist the fools, then only fools vote, and your country goes to crap.

Apathy is death.

Drugs should be illegal everywhere, altogether, no matter what kind it is.

And this comes from a guy living in the Netherlands, where the dumbasses who actually get legal weed and such waste their time on the crap.
All drugs should be legal everywhere. Why do you care if someone is wasting their time on that crap ? I surely not. They can all die of overdose for all I care.

There's too much money invested in tobacco and alcohol to ever ban thoughs; the next best alternative is making it possible for people to legally enjoy themselves another way. Also, pot's not that bad for you, in moderation of course.

lol the world according to you. It's much more complicated than you make it out to be. You think that people doing the drugs will be the only people hurt in such a scenario?

You didn't vote and you're complaining? Pretty hypocritical.

I hate marijuana, so I'm honestly glad it didn't pass. I would have voted no.

And I still dont care. Everyone has a freedom of choice, and everyone faces consequences of their choices.

yeah, i TOTALLY would have made a difference
OKay ,think of it this way, when your country cotes for a president, only HALF the people legal to vote actually do. lets say only half the voted on this as well. Suddenly you're not just one person anymore are you?

Only half the Americans that can vote do, then they ***** about the president. get off your lazy ass and vote, or shut the fuck up about your apathetic decision to not make a difference
read this: http://www.sos.ca.gov/contest_summary.pdf

The fact remains that you didn't get involved. The keystone of democracy is getting your opinion heard. Even if it isn't acted upon because the voices of everyone else are in the majority, the fact remains that you've stood for your democratic right. What kind of world would we live in if everyone only played games that they won and took decisions that they knew would ensure success?

The 97% was the number of ballots counted, not the population percentage that voted. Starting on page 38, I believe, it breaks it down percentage of registered voters per county who actually voted. You'll see a lot of 40-60% turnout, and I think one as high as 89%.

but no, 97% of the people did not vote. They stopped counting ballots at 97% because there would be no feasible way for it to change the outcome in the remaining 3% uncounted.

It could have gone much differently. But most people chose to stay home instead of going out to vote.

EDIT: It's also pasted on page one. look at the column titled "percent ballots cast"

I knew there was a reason I was forgetting about the tobacco and alcohol...
Still, we're not exactly leading the healthiest lifestyles nowadays with all the junk food and whatnot. I'm not sure encouraging more unhealthy things is a good idea.
