So, the Dark Souls Community are a bunch of uppity twats... supposedly?

You look at any series ranging from video games, comic books, to movies, you'll find a devoted fanbase that might sometimes come across as being a bit too attached. Here on the escapist, I pretty much had to endure over a year of whining and complaining that came from the Mass Effect fanbase which I am also a part of. Personally, I never felt the ending was that groundbreaking-ly bad to cause such an uproar. But yet the complaining... just.. endured. The same happened with Dragon Age. Also I remember the whole Bioshock 2 fiasco a couple of years back, and how every one derailed a pretty above average game into the ground for not wooing its them like its predecessor. did.

Well, what ever! That's just the nature of things, and what happens to fans when their beloved series changes or doesn't hold up in later iterations.

All this whining and complaining, and now that the Dark Souls community is having their own fits with the possibility of their beloved franchises being changed, I'm hearing a lot of people throwing around terms like "pricks," and that kinda pisses me off.

An entire year of Mass Effect fans not STFU, and after two weeks of DS fans, I'm hearing this crap.

Now I'm not condoning this act of nerdraging that fans tend to do in times like this. No! DS fans need to calm down (I was there too, until I came to my senses) and wait for more information to be released about the sequel, and even afterwards, if the game doesn't live up to expectations, that shouldn't give the DS community rights to pull what the Mass Effect fanbase did.

But - to get back on topic - for anyone that's on the other side of the fence, I have to ask... what's leading for some to start this name calling? Never have I come across any posts where DS fans have been mocking other gamers for not playing or beating that game. Never have I come across any posts where I've heard any belittling. All I've come across is threads saying "No easy mode" and somehow that's supposedly come across offensively to some, even though 3 years being on the escapist I've seen countless thread complain about how easy today's games are.

Personally, as a DS fan, I don't want any sort of easy mode added to the game because I feel that would completely misrepresent the point of the game. It's the same reason so many fans of Bioshock didn't want a MP added to the sequel even though it was probably not going to effect the SP. This is just one game in a sea of games, and we like it for what it represents. This isn't in any form belittling other games or gamers.

I can't speak for everyone that's part of this community, but before people start to label us... they have to ask if they're doing it correctly.

I don't see why gamers are upset by having OPTIONS. I'm not a big sports gamer but I love my baseball games, and I want hitting to be realistically hard in my baseball game. The current top baseball series, MLB The Show, has an OPTION to hit just by pressing a single button, and I don't have a problem with that because I'm not FORCED into hitting that way. Lastly, Dark Souls is not a hard game anyways (you can kill so many enemies from afar with a bow and arrows), it's actually a really easy game once you understand the game and the mechanics. Many of the boss battles were joke easy like Seath The Scaleless who cursed me the first time. Then, I just came back with all the curse resistant clothing and equipment I had, and I just stood right in front of him mashing the melee button without blocking or dodging once. I got through entire dungeons not dying once without using a walkthrough. Demon's Souls/Dark Souls fans really have to get over themselves thinking that these games are actually hard. Dark Souls really disappointed me, I was expecting that I would have to get good at a hard-to-master combat system to get through the game and beat the bosses; NOPE, all you have to do is block and then attack. I was expecting the game throwing enemies at you that forced you to riposte and use advanced moves like how Bayonetta forced you to use dodge offsetting to get through the harder difficulties. Bayonetta on normal difficulty is much harder than Dark Souls.

It's a piece of entertainment, not the holy grail of gaming. Let everyone get what they want, From gets more money and the sequel will therefore be even better.

I really do not understand, why people concern themselves with the experience of other people who affect them in no way. As long as I get my classic experience, I don't care about what some other guy does in his game.

Oh hey, another thread that will get derailed in four seconds to turn into "IT SHOULDN'T HAVE AN EASY MODE YOU FILTHY CASUAL" "YES IT SHOULD YOU SCUMBAG ELITIST"

Great work there. Another one of these is just what we need.

Pretty much this. If you won't play easy mode, good for you. Let other people play it then, it has no god damn effect on you.

All fanbases will have their fair share of whiners. There's no way around it.

Dark Souls, however, does have a rather nasty community. Which isn't to say that there aren't decent, well adjusted people that participate in Dark Souls/Demon's Souls regularly. See: PeevePeeverson, EpicNameBro, jblackmel, OnlyAfro, JerpDoesGames, BarneezyJones, vageta311 and OroborotheNinja. All of them are consistent video uploaders and fairly tolerable people in general.

I really don't care either way, but I can't the only one getting a little annoyed by people being annoyed by gamers having different opinions.

Maybe we should just get the devs to flip a coin on it.

Coin tosses are the best way to solve problems.

I think the problem people have is that the people who will play the game on Easy-Mode will think that they had the actual DS experience when what they actually experienced was not what actual DS is like. This, in turn, would be problematic because those people that play the easy version will NOT think of their experience as not the actual one, they will speak of their experience as though it was "the" experience. As though that was the proper, canon, real game. This is what people who are fans of the way DS is have a problem with, the idea that people will speak of this easy made for more money alternative version of the game as though it was the proper one, potentially even eclipsing the actual version in the process...and if that were to happen, DS would indeed BECOME this easy-mode item as far as the common view is concerned, which would indeed spell the end for the series as it is currently.

Gamers of all types tend to get pissed when something they love is taken away from them and there are no other alternatives out there on the market to fill the same gap. Such is the life of a niche gamer when a game or genre they love changes it's format to suit popular trends.

Remember around 3-4 years ago was the PC gamers heyday for moaning, back then most popular games were shitty console ports. We don't see a dicky boo from them nowadays because they actually have some proper PC FPS games to play.

Hopefully if DS2 does turn out to be crap then another dev will make a game to plug the gap now that the mid tier / indies are more vibrant nowadays.

Ther second your favorite game stops being something fun to do with your spare time, and becomes a club you use to bludgeon so-called "lesser" gamers, you've lost your right to be catered to.

Are we STILL talking about this? Seriously? Well, I might as well give my two cents.

What is wrong with adding an easy mode? Games like XCOM: Enemy Unknown, Metal Gear Solid 3, Halo, Shadow of the Colossus, ect. have multiple difficulty settings, and no one seems to have a problem with that. (From what I've seen anyway) What the hell is so special about Dark Souls that it can't have an easy mode?

Now, I'm not saying Dark Souls SHOULD have an easy mode. But I certainly wouldn't mind the idea. I just won't choose it as I prefer to play on the default difficulty setting.

I'm sorry, but who has done this? I don't remember that ever being said on this website.

I really don't know why they're complaining about an easy mode option, I mean my God, it's the Mass Effect 3 gay option thing all over again, so I might as well repeat what Jim said about the issue, it's an option, you can ignore it, it is not going to impact on you or your gameplay experience unless you want it to, so grow up

But you just don't understand the refinement of the difficulty you dirty peasant.

Mmm...yes.

OT: Because they're being silly like all fan groups are, get over it, your part of one of the 5 thousand annoying fan groups that plague this world.

[small]And seriously, get over the difficulty thing, how do you even know it'll be bad for the game yet?[/small]

I don't really care what they do as long as the core Souls experience is left unharmed. Want to make it more accessible? Have fun! If they want to add an Easy Mode, sure go for it. As long as it's only an option. Force an Easy Mode down my throat and then we have a problem.
