They showed off a small bit of gameplay footage at their psx conference and it looks great, but what some people might not like is they've completely redone the battle system from the active time battle system to a full, real time action rpg battle system akin to kingdom hearts and FF15.

So what is everyone's thoughts on this? I'm personally okay with this change, I have the original on my Vita and now I can purchase it on my PS4 (also announced at psx) So getting a different gameplay experience with the remake will be pretty cool in my opinion

Here's the gameplay trailer in case anyone's interested:

I'm sad that its changed but I won't hate the new system until I give it a try. I just wished we did get this game as a JRPG though over an Action JRPG. I don't really enjoy the "just play the old one" excuse because...well, the original one is incredibly dated in translation, graphics, and stuff like that. But once again, I'll try the new battle system before complaining too much. I mean, I enjoyed FFXIII battle system so it's not like I exactly have to have the old Active Time Battle system.

Please, please, PLEASE let Jeesie be able to live this time...
...What, you were expecting me to want to save the Flower Girl over the awesome badass who blew up the reactor.

I ALWAYS liked her better, even if she wasn't playable.
Hope they put in branching paths or shake up the story a little bit, just so they don't completely rehash everything.

My enthusiasm has been... significantly lessened by this. Not only by the battle system, but the super-serious seeming Barrett.

I'll still end up buying it, for atmosphere and plot primarily, though they could quite easily mess that up if they end up focusing it all on Genesis Rhapsodos and other such silliness.

Yeah, that's about what I expected. Too soon to say that they completely changed it. And it looked like you could control other characters like Barret. It honestly didn't show enough to say for certain how it works. Materia is too important to the story to remove it from the game, so I'm certain that is still in there. It looks like there is a gauge in the corner.

Upon closer inspection, that looks like a Limit gauge. And it seems to slowly build as you attack and to deplete when you aren't. But it seems that once maxed it lets you use some Limit skill. I certainly recognized Barret's Big Shot Limit, but not Cloud's attack. So, yes, I feel confident that it is an Action type system, like in FFXV.

Color me intrigued, though not entirely happy. I wasn't really sure what I wanted from the combat. I'm a huge Final Fantasy fan (especially of VII), but I'm not so childish as to call this crap. I think it could work. Crisis Core was a solid game, for example, and I think XIII could have been okay with some minor tweaks. Looks like they may have learned some lessons, but I wanna see more before I pass my Judgement [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iV3KBvtgPjE].

That being said, it looks fucking beautiful. Cloud looks like he might be the classic FFVII Cloud rather than emo Cloud ("I don't care about your politics"). Graphically, it is beautiful and brings Midgar to life. The voice acting seemed okay, though the Wedge voice seemed a little off to me. And I think we saw how they might be doing the whole voice talking to Cloud moments, too. The music felt like a modern version of the classic music, and like it didn't forget it's roots.

Looks like we saw some cut scenes as well as some actual walking around. It occurs to me that the scene of them watching an explosion happens in normal gameplay. I swear I saw Cloud get pushed back slightly there.

I suspect this is an early build. Based on what news I've heard and how this all comes from very early in the game, didn't even show Tifa or Aerith, I'm expecting it will get more polish and probably be released in 2017, around the 20th anniversary.

Oh, and...

It looks like a FF7 that I could actually enjoy playing. I never got why people enjoy turn-based combat with no strategy and just inputting the same common sense commands over and over again. I like good, strategic turn-based combat like XCOM where you actually have to plan and think. Turn-based combat with just allies and enemies standing across from each other trading blows back and forth isn't strategic because there's no positioning involved whatsoever thus removing a huge amount of strategy. FF12 proves standard FF turn-based combat is so non-strategic that it only takes a few if-then-else statements for the game to play itself. Put gambits into FF7 and the game would play itself too. I don't enjoy playing games that could be automated in less than 10 lines of code. The FF series was pretty much always in this weird middle ground between wanting to be fast-paced and tactical at the same time but you can't have your cake and eat it too. Either choose action combat or real strategic turn-based combat, either is fine with me but you can't do both at the same time.

Ok...not really sure how to react to this one. I mean it looks decent...as someone who hasn't ever played FF7 I'm not sure how to react to this.

Wow.

I may have to actually pay attention to this one. A re-graphics FF7 didn't really make me care, but this looks neat.

Kind of, anyway. Because this just went from a 20-30 dollar remake to a 60 dollar game.

The gameplay bit looks like fun! Crisis Core seemed to use a similar game style but you couldn't switch characters and that was a really fun game to play too. I really wish there would be a remastering of the original but this looks like it's shaping up to be a fun game to play. Love the VA doing Barret even though I don't know his name and I'm not expecting this game to launch before 2018.

Not super happy about the new combat system, I'd prefer to keep the old ATB system in place, but I guess they HAVE to make it more modern.

I'm gonna buy it regardless.

(my reaction the SECOND I saw the combat in the trailer)

WEE-OO WEE-OO WEE-OO WEE-OO! *imminent flamewar alarms go off*

Combat seems to be kingdom heart-y, and not at all like the original. Impending fanboy freakout imminent! And his eyes aren't "shiny Mako Blue"! Hide yo wives, hide yo kids and if you have a husband, hide him too! XD

Personally, though, I like what I see. It looks neat and the way magic seems to be handled tells me that each character will use it in a different way, so there might be more reason to swap characters around. That and I like Barret, they did a decent job with him. He looks buff as fuck, but not a caricature muscle-monster like he was in the original. I DO kinda miss the ATB system, but this one looks alright too.

Mind you I do find it kinda hilarious to see Cloud running in a street with a GIGANTIC LENS FLARING SWORD on his back. That would normally lead to a million phone calls to the police. XD No rational person runs around with a sword that huge in the middle of the street.

I know I'm not getting a PS4, so unless this eventually comes out on PC, I have no dog in this fight, but this looks pretty neat. If I can borrow a PS4 at some point, I might give the remake a spin even if, looking back and disregarding nostalgia, the original was kinda iffy.

It looks nice, sword of blinding light and sligthly weird Barrett shades notwithstanding.

Not sure about the combat as I prefer turn based combat and having control of all my characters in jpgs. As long is it is not like XII's combat and the materia system is kept somewhat similar to the original I'll give it a go.

Okay, just in case people continue coming to this thread despite the site now having an official one, I wanna say something I noticed here as well.

There are four gauges in combat. Three are labeled, HP, MP, and Limit. But what is the fourth? I thought the gauge depleted while not attacking and increased when you attacked, but there is very little context in the video. At the time, I didn't see the Limit gauge and assumed that it was the Limit gauge that have been reworked. But that was obviously wrong. That might be some form of ATB gauge. So fans of the ATB battles may not be out just yet.

That makes it sound like you cue up attacks until it's full, then go and fill up the other character's bars with commands.

That might be a neat thing.

Awwww. I was hoping for an Esper dating sim.
I don't want to replay a game I already played! I want a FF7 meets Mario Kart sprinkled with a lethal dose of Duke Nukem and a side of City: Skylines.
That's a game worth playing!

Yeah, I had considered that. We really need a full video of uncut combat from beginning to end. If you can easily control all the characters in your party, all the better.

FFVII is my favourite game of all time and while I am keeping my excitement in check I am liking the new direction for combat. I would love to see them create something similar to Advent Children in looks for that. Also while I liked the materia system the actual combat system beyond that was fairly standard fare in the original and I have no attachment to it so as long as limit breaks and Materia are in im ok with other changes to it (as long as it does not suck).

Was hoping to see Aeris and Tifa :( oh well. Barret looks pretty nice im not buying the shades but they seem to have made one fatal design choice with him and that is Mr T is not voicing him, Why I do not know they are basically the same person after all. Fix it Square Enix I know you read this forum and take all feedback on the game from within it seriously.

I'm perfectly fine with it. I think the old ATB system would've looked rather odd and out-of-place with suped-up modern graphics, and frankly I kinda expected this.

Was hoping to see other characters but later I guess.

Well color me impressed...that we actually got something within the same year the remake was announced. No, seriously, after the reveal a few months ago I thought we would have to wait a couple years before seeing anything else.

As for the trailer, it looks alright. Didn't wow me but it certainly didn't disappoint. Barret is a bit more serious than I thought he would be though. Will certainly keep an eye on this
