So it looks like Resident Evil 6 will be appearing at the Tokyo Game Show. As a fan of the series I'm both excited and a little nervous.
So let's have a discussion about the things that work for the Resident Evil franchise and the things that don't.

Well, I think they have the basic formula for gameplay style down. And by that I mean the 3rd person control scheme used for 4 and 5. I'd say it's very solid.
They need to desperately fix the setting...and throw in a little pacing from time to time.
Most of RE5 took place in an extremely brightly lit setting...and while I liked the game, it didn't feel very...Resident Evil-ish to me. Also...no more enemies with guns...I get enough of that with every other shooting game. I want to face an abnormal monstrosity.

They need to cancel Resi 6. To be completely honest I feel that they are just going to try to create some convoluted story to link it together while trying to copy 4. Yes I understand 4 was probably the best one, and a great game. But it wasn't resident evil I grew up with. In my opinion, cut the crap, make it simple and scary. Back to basics. Then I will be more convinced this won't be a repeat of 5 (Which I felt was the worst)

I'd say add the "suitcase" inventory thing back in, make the zombies actually act like zombies (no guns, motorcycles, etc.), and have a decent story. The story in RE5 was kind of weak, and I think if the game had a compelling plot I'd be more likely to enjoy it.

Yes, the monstrosities in Resident Evil 4 where my favorites an definitely no more AK wielding soldiers.

Does it really matter?
What works for me:

Over the shoulder aiming.
Probably the best thing that has ever been added to the series.

'Free-roaming' environments.

The puzzles

What doesn't work for me:

Buyable upgrades.
An upgrade system similar to Just Cause 2 with hidden parts that can be found and used to upgrade weapons would be much better.

Enemies dropping ammo/cash or anything other than key items.

On-rails action sequences.

And what should have never been seen in a Resident Evil game.

Currency System.
Less said about this the better.

Buyable weapons/Health Sprays.
Additional weapons should have to be found throughout the game. And in a survival horror game health items should never ever be available to buy.

Multiplayer.

I enjoyed 5. It had the wonderful mechanics of 4 which made the game very playable in my opinion. I had played Resident Evil since I was younger and I feel like 3rd person is right for them.
However, I do feel like they need to incorporate a more scary atmosphere. The main thing that was wrong (setting wise) in 5 was that a good bit of it took place in brightly lit places. The foggy towns of 4 were fairly creepy and added a certain amount of dread to the game.

Now the story needs to be tweaked. I don't mind having TriCell be the new evil corporation, but let's try to make more sense of it, ok?

And I prefer creepy zombies. Zombies with jaws half hanging off, eyes missing and organs exposed. I want scary ass creepy zombies! Have a zombie without legs crawling slowly towards the laying while loudly yelling some creepy noise.
Or have that same noise played while the player sees no zombie. This will heighten the players sense of fear. Hearing an enemy but not seeing it is very creepy.

Resident Evil 1's scaryness + Resident Evil 4's camera and controls + Resident Evil 5's graphics.
Oh, and also: no allies.

I honestly want Resident Evil to return to its survival horror roots. It can use the the same control/camera scheme as RE4 and 5, but it needs to be horror. RE5 felt a lot like RE1 in some places, right down to the aim-but-don't-move controls. It can use the mechanic, but it needs to be horror. Lost in Shadows, the RE5 dlc proved that it can do horror. My first playthrough of that was really unnerving, and it really brought me back.

Anyway; Multiplayer is hot in gaming right now. Seems like every game needs multiplayer. RE6 will probably include it in some way. But to be properly horror, it needs to be SINGLE PLAYER with no AI assistance. Since we all know that's not going to happen, the AI on your partner needs to not glom up on me every chance it gets. Sheva got in my way so often that I started to want to shoot her.

Zombies; Las Plagas was great for RE4, but it needs to stop there. I enjoyed the zombies and monstrosities of past RE games. The reborn fast zombie from REmake; the Tyrant from RE2; Nemesis, Jills deadly shadow through all of RE3. Las Plagas may act like a zombie when it's not riding a motorcycle, shooting a gun, regressing into tribal ways- etc etc, but it's not a zombie. A zombie is decaying flesh, shambling corpse. Shoot it, and some thing might fall off of its body, but the abomination carries on.

Wesker; I loved Wesker as a villain. Riiiight up until he decided to take an Urobos Bath. I'm unsure if we should let sleeping dogs lie. Wesker went out in a lame way.

Reboot: I seem to remember something about capcom commenting that if they did an RE6, it'd be a reboot. Perhaps this is that? A PRIME time to get back to that horror origin. :)

ALLOW YOU YOU MOVE WHILE AIMING!!!!!!

I could not play through RE5 because of that alone. In our modern games, there is absolutely no reason not to have a feature like that.

I'd argue the concept works well in a Resident Evil game. Sure it doesn't seem to make much sense, but if they gave you too much mobility it'd be pathetically easy. I had no problem with that system at all. One thing that should always be considered in survival horror is the fact that you have to leave your characters somewhat vulnerable. It's not very horrifying if you can easily dodge every single hit.

Give us something that looks more like what Resident Evil 4 was going to be before they changed it into an action game. Not to say that 4 was bad, just that from a horror stand point, the Resident Evil 4 they had before looked better/scarier. They seem to focus too much on the over-arching story more-so than the actual "horror" part of the game. It'd be nice to give us a game that fit into the universe, but wasn't some melodrama like RE5. I enjoyed Albert Wesker's one liners and Uroboros speech as much as anyone else (maybe not for the reasons they were going for...) but I feel that they really aren't needed in a horror game...

Between this and Silent Hill: Downpour, these are my last hopes for these series. I'll probably keep buying them anyway, just for that one little moment where you remember what these games used to be, but I'll just have given up any hope that they'll be anything close to what they used to be, even on a bad day.

It'd honestly would have been nice if instead of re-releasing an HD version of Code Veronica if they released the REmake for the Gamecube. Code Veronica just looks weird in HD... REmake would have been nice though.

I think I'm happy with the direction the series is heading.

...by that, I of course mean that Revelations is looking good. It keeps the over-the-shoulder camera. However, it seems to be slow-paced and atmosphere-y. Hopefully, they've dropped the merchant system.

Hopefully, Revelations lives up to its first impressions. The series has been walking the line between action and horror, and having action-y spin-offs, keeping the horror for the main series, might really help this series.

For me I would say the opposite.

Scrap any thoughts of multiplayer, scrap the stupid co-op and retarded AI partner, and make it a long, satisfying single player game like Resi 4.
