So, what do you want in the PS4/Xbox 1080?

Ok ,I know 720 is the common slang for the next xbox, but seriously, they've got a chance to shoehorn in a HD reference and they wouldn't do it?

Firstly, I'd say I don't want either for at least 5 years, I still feel they abandoned the PS2 and Xbox with a lot of life and creativity left in them, leading to a swathe of titles which could have been done easily on the hardware with a little scaling down of resolution.

Firstly, I'd suggest a Steam style store and piracy protection, as I think in 5 years time, anyone considering a new console will have at least basic DSL internet in their home, although it absolutely must feature Steam's 'offline mode' where you can still play without being connected, just without the online features such as multiplayer and achievements, leaderboards, updates etc.

Backwards compatibility, as an optional extra - now I don't believe people who don't want it should have to pay, but small platform the console sits on with a dvd slot and the essential chips of a 360/PS3,plus the dvd drive will probably be under $50 cost by then, and still cheaper than a 2nd hand console, as well as being far smaller. Yes I'm thinking like the 32X for the Sega Genesis/Megadrive, except not hideous and not a complete failure. Also, how far have we REALLY come from the old SNES controller with its four buttons on front and shoulder buttons? Exactly, so no redesigning the ports to force more hardware sales, I'd personally like to bring all my Guitar Hero, Rock Band, Buzz, Eyetoy etc gizmos into the next gen.

Some common sense from the online store - if a game is $60 in Walmart, it should not be $79.99 to download, and if in the future someone like Valve wants to offer a pile of free DLC to its customers, considering that your customers paid for the console, and the game the DLC is for, and probably for the online service you're providing, LET them offer it for free!

Hard drive storage - Come on folks, it's currently about £50 for 1000GB of HDD, yet we're paying thru the nose for 120GB ones. Amazon.com are selling the 120gb drives for $100. If a console 5 years down the line isn't coming with at least 2000 GB as standard, and the option to add another or at least hot swap them, then it's a pretty lousy decision.

Controllers - Wireless is a good option, but I think it should stay that, an option. I pesonally love that if the 360 pad runs out of power, you just plug it into the front and carry on playing. Wireless is a great tech, but it still has flaws. Leave it as an option.

While we're on joypads, lets go from 4 buttons to 6 on the front, like the XBOX controller Z had the black n white buttons next to the 4 regular ones. Allows for more options, and offers a reasonable 'fighter' layout, without going too far into 'too many buttons' land. With two rows of three, at a touch you always know where your thumb is, and can be assisted with dimples on the centre two. I think 2 shoulder buttons and 2 triggers is about right also. Doesn't sound very innovative, but really, the SNES controller could control most of today's games at a push, given an analogue pad.

Oh and damn, give it a full web browser, there's no reason MS can't include IE, with constant updates, and parental locks, and an 'ALT-TAB' option so you can go look stuff up mid game without leaving the couch :D

So , is there anything you really hope they'll rectify or improve in the next gen?

Personally, in five years I'm sure we will have a couple terabyte sized HDD. I also think that in five years, games will slightly be a little more compact as in terms of graphics, but it's still a slow step. You see an improvement about every year with graphics but slowly as if graphics could be compared to a person climbing a ladder. Though, what I'm really trying to point out is that we still probably won't need 5,000 Gig HDD drives because games will hopefully still remain to be 10 gigs or less on an install but still be more intense than our current gen games.

I will agree with you on the Xbox 360 controller. Granted, I personally like it for FPS titles but it blows giant dicks when it comes to fighting games. The so called "D-Pad" is more like an 8-directional joystick which is flawed in so many ways in comparison to a standard d-pad such as one on a PS3 controller, or Wiimote.

Though, with fighting games, I like my D-Pad to be in a comfortable position such as on the PS3 controller. I don't know. I hardly have trouble playing Fighting/FPS games on my PS3 but fighting games piss me off on the 360.

Obviously, next-gen will simply just be pushed graphics and have high standards. I really doubt we'll see another console for at least three years.

There's one thing I want:
A good long wait.
I would also like to see a stop to this paying for online crap. I already pay the cable company for online, bother them if you want more money.

I would also love to see a console that is built well and get?s decent support. It seems this generation you have to choose between the two. Either you get the bricktastic marvel or the console that seems to lose more features than it gains.

Ugh, the only thing I want to see is a better community... that's my only real beef with xbox. But I cant' really see MS doing anything about that lol. But I definitely agree with your controller point, keep it wired with wireless capabilities. Hmm...and as for the browser, I played with the Wii and PS3 browser and totally found it a hassle and terribly slow. Which could have very well been my connection at the time... But if they did want to integrate that in they should bring in a keyboard and mouse as well.

I can't say much for PS3 as it's been years since I've actually messed with them and I saw a need for major improvement, though I'm happy to see they started moving in the right direction with the online services and the cross gaming chat channel.

I should probably say, I did just pick 5 years as an arbitrary figure, I'm not asking people to predict the future, just wondering what improvements you'd like to see in the next gen.

Gonzo has a good poiint in the word bricktastic tho, please, please do some thorough tests before releasing something like this to the public, if the next Xbox has reliability issues, I think they'll have blown their chances in the console area for good.

I'm not saying sony are perfect, but I don't think it was handled well, the whole ring o' death thing.

Also, BOTH of em need a word with their designers, I don't want them to be dull, but wouldn't it be nice if they fitted with the rest of the boxes under the TV? Instead of having some kinda shape that means nothing can be within about a foot of them. Of course that could have been cunning design, forcing the vents to be clear of obstruction :D

A better name than Xbox 720!

But since Kinect, I can see Xbox is taking up Nintendo's challenge of coming up with dumb names for their stuff....-_-

I expect the next generation of consoles to be quite conservative. The Wii's early inroads fizzled away somewhat, and public response to motion control has been lukewarm so far. I expect a further polishing of graphics, the reuse of content (as improved resolution and graphics quality makes it more expensive to produce fresh assets and textures), and to see more digital store services.

Consoles are silly and disposable.
Why would i bother with something like that if it's only going to be outdated in a few years?
PC's are the best way to go.

Absolutely nothing, I hope cloud computing completely ruins the notion of another generation of consoles. And I don't see why game devs wouldn't want it either; it'd shatter the used games market.

Hardlight tech. That'll make me breakfast as I play. And holographic tech. That'll make my character breakfast as I play.

For both xbox live and psn to be "Bridged" so that players can finally get along.
That or MS use the barrels of money to bribe the US Government to declare Sony a terroristic threat and bomb them back to the Stone Age. But that's just wishful thinking. Seriously, I'd like to see Google Chrome built in.
Sadly I can't believe MS would team up with their main browser rival any more than they would their main console rival, you may as well hope for it to come with linux preinstalled.

I kinda assumed this topic would have been done to death, but as I had opinions I figured I'd try it out :D
