Ok ,I know 720 is the common slang for the next xbox, but seriously, they've got a chance to shoehorn in a HD reference and they wouldn't do it?
Firstly, I'd say I don't want either for at least 5 years, I still feel they abandoned the PS2 and Xbox with a lot of life and creativity left in them, leading to a swathe of titles which could have been done easily on the hardware with a little scaling down of resolution.
Firstly, I'd suggest a Steam style store and piracy protection, as I think in 5 years time, anyone considering a new console will have at least basic DSL internet in their home, although it absolutely must feature Steam's 'offline mode' where you can still play without being connected, just without the online features such as multiplayer and achievements, leaderboards, updates etc.
Backwards compatibility, as an optional extra - now I don't believe people who don't want it should have to pay, but small platform the console sits on with a dvd slot and the essential chips of a 360/PS3,plus the dvd drive will probably be under $50 cost by then, and still cheaper than a 2nd hand console, as well as being far smaller. Yes I'm thinking like the 32X for the Sega Genesis/Megadrive, except not hideous and not a complete failure. Also, how far have we REALLY come from the old SNES controller with its four buttons on front and shoulder buttons? Exactly, so no redesigning the ports to force more hardware sales, I'd personally like to bring all my Guitar Hero, Rock Band, Buzz, Eyetoy etc gizmos into the next gen.
Some common sense from the online store - if a game is $60 in Walmart, it should not be $79.99 to download, and if in the future someone like Valve wants to offer a pile of free DLC to its customers, considering that your customers paid for the console, and the game the DLC is for, and probably for the online service you're providing, LET them offer it for free!
Hard drive storage - Come on folks, it's currently about £50 for 1000GB of HDD, yet we're paying thru the nose for 120GB ones. Amazon.com are selling the 120gb drives for $100. If a console 5 years down the line isn't coming with at least 2000 GB as standard, and the option to add another or at least hot swap them, then it's a pretty lousy decision.
Controllers - Wireless is a good option, but I think it should stay that, an option. I pesonally love that if the 360 pad runs out of power, you just plug it into the front and carry on playing. Wireless is a great tech, but it still has flaws. Leave it as an option.
While we're on joypads, lets go from 4 buttons to 6 on the front, like the XBOX controller Z had the black n white buttons next to the 4 regular ones. Allows for more options, and offers a reasonable 'fighter' layout, without going too far into 'too many buttons' land. With two rows of three, at a touch you always know where your thumb is, and can be assisted with dimples on the centre two. I think 2 shoulder buttons and 2 triggers is about right also. Doesn't sound very innovative, but really, the SNES controller could control most of today's games at a push, given an analogue pad.
Oh and damn, give it a full web browser, there's no reason MS can't include IE, with constant updates, and parental locks, and an 'ALT-TAB' option so you can go look stuff up mid game without leaving the couch
So , is there anything you really hope they'll rectify or improve in the next gen?
