So what is it you're actually paying for with Live Gold?

360's cheaper than the PS3, and now that Sony is gonna start charging for it, we're still cheaper.

Also, there's a mute feature.
You do realize that PSN as it is will still be free, right?
I heard somewhere that they'd start charging.

Also, Microsoft doesn't ask for your freaking address.
Yeah, they do, your phone # too, you just have the option of not entering it.
Huh, I don't remember doing that. I guess it's new because of all the RRDs.

They'll be charging for PlaystationPlus, which is a subscription option that adds tons of new stuff. Playstation Network how it is will still be free though.

And Microsoft does so ask for an address. I had to confirm it when I added 3 months of gold to my account 3 days ago.

PSN may be free, but good luck voice chatting with people when 90%+ of the player base doesn't have a Bluetooth headset, whereas headsets come bundled with all 360's.

I use both services, and Live is far better simply because of the fact that people talk to each other on it. I've yet to play a game of Killzone 2 or Fat Princess where more than one person is using a headset, whereas Halo 3 and Call of Duty (say what you will about the 9-year-olds who won't stop talking) at least have talking going on, and that way you can form a strategy and go at it.

Is the $50/year price justified? No, not really. You're paying for multiplayer gameplay, which comes free on every other system. But is it the best online service on a console? Currently, yes it is.
I present you, the advantages of PC gaming. Eliminates both issues that involves PS3 or Xbox 360. Also, from experiences with both console (Owning a PS3 and played on a Xbox 360 numerous times), I've yet to see any kind of amazing teamwork between 9-year olds. They do exist, on both platforms, but I find that on every platform, especially games like Call of Duty, there is very little to no teamwork going along. You will always have those that try to take "command" but then you have people complaining that they're doing this and then say that they want to play the way they want as opposed to winning. Say what you want, it's all the same in me eyes.

OT: Port forwarding might help with your problem, although you will need to search up what ports to open and how to depending on your router.

Sony isn't charging for their online services, they're charging for "extra' online services. You're supposed to still be able to play online multiplayer without paying money.

You get nothing that you couldn't get for free from PSN, at least nothing worth paying for. And PSN Plus is optional and gives you exclusives and some cheaper prices. Does Gold do that?
Yes it does. Deals of the Week, early demos, early DLC. All of which require Gold, as I recall.

Besides, even with single player games, I find myself gravitating toward the Xbox, because I can play my Assassin's Creed while simultaneously talking to a bunch of people playing Mass Effect. Party chat is so awesome. Why doesn't PS3 have that? You'd think they would add it in with Playstation Plus.

Most of what I play on the XBox 360 is either single-player or local-multiplayer; I don't care about Live Gold as I do all my multiplayer gaming on the PC.

PS3, its free! Also it seems that some of you are misinformed, their not going to start charging for the PSN but instead charge for extras like exclusive demos and free games.
And Sony have never changed their policy on anything ever. Remember when rumble was a "last generation feature" and "impossible" to include rumble with the sixaxis?
I'd be happy to be proved wrong, but it's seriously only a matter of time before PSN+ is required for online gaming. All they have to do is start releasing games that require PSN+ support to play online, then start removing support for games that don't.
I think Sony will stand by there principals. Oh and also judging by your Xbox avatar it would seem your just sore over having to pay for your online.

Check your NAT settings if you're having connectivity problems. Just run a network test from your console settings.

Protip: "Strict" is bad.

Oh, I wholeheartedly agree with you that PC multiplayer is superior. I just thought we were comparing Live to PSN.

Trust me I've tried this thread once before.

Be prepared for a bunch of 360 fanboys bashing you calling you either a fanboy or a troll.

I brought up the fact that running the multiplayer network of xbox live incurs little to no cost towards Microsoft. Why is this? It's peer to peer. No servers at all.

I then questionned why LIVE is charged for, and mentioned that it's a completely unethical business practice, to which I just got a bunch of ignorant consumers commenting with "it's a business, they want to make money, duh", or morons completely disregarding my point with "stfu xbox live rules I enjoy it, stop whining".

The best one... "it's how they afford to keep posting demos and trailers and live arcade games". Yeeeeah... non-paying silver members get demos and trailers for free, and live arcade games are charged per game for any member, we shouldn't be paying for the privilege of having the option to buy them.

Just ignore this thread, and forget about it.

Also if anyone brings up the fact I have LIVE gold, it was a gift, I will not be renewing it. Online should be free, unless it's an MMO or something.
That's quite bizarre really, that Xbox Live is peer to peer. Now with the PS3 given that the Cell is often underutilised and is used in servers, it would make sense to handle things peer to peer, and there the games being free would also make sense. But this is completely backwards, PSN is free and has servers and you pay for Xbox Live Gold and don't get them.

What I'm really curious is this persistent claim that Xbox Live Gold is better than PSN and that it's worth paying for. Is this just people trying to justify the money they shelled out?

That's basically it. People trying to justify their purchase rather than admit what ignorant consumers they are.

They charge for free things per month. It's like Sam's club as compared to Wallmart, ou get samples and pretension.

1. I've never had the problem you're apparently having.

2. You're playing UNO, not a lot of people who play UNO on an XBOX, at least not too many who live in the same area.

Like many before have said, the problems with lag and such MUST BE an issue with your connection. I have an xbox, ps3, and a gaming computer, and neither one of them have any better or worse online play. Actually, that's wrong. The xbox has the best of the three, but I don't think you want to hear that.

Trash talking is about the same on all three, though you do find a few more assholes on xbox than the others. Of course, you can ALWAYS mute someone on xbox, while on the pc or ps3 it's up to the game to allow you to mute or not.

I don't know why you dislike xbox live so much, you can get a year of play for only $60, which really is dirt cheap for the quality you recieve.

I do have one complaint. The microsoft point system for buying add-ons and such. It's such a retarded way for microsoft to try to fool you into thinking your not spending as much as you really are. Just tell me how much I have to pay for it!
At the very least they can make the prices fair. And what I mean by fair is I buy 1400 points for 20 bucks. Fuck off with this 560 bullshit. What am I supposed to do with the 940 left???

Well either there's nothing wrong with my NAT settings or NXE is rather uninformative. All I get is info that I'm connected.

Seems like you didn't read my post. I was pointing out how Sony have basically never stood by their principles in the past, and asking why they'd start now? Nice of you to judge me by my Xbox avatar too. Did you look at my profile and see I have a PS3 as well, or did you just jump to the nearest conclusion because it was convenient?

Better luck next time.

Yeah I read your post but it just seemed like you wrote it just to be a jerk, and that post just proved my point.

You're making a rather weak argument. It's not like motion controls vs rumble was a Sony principle. There was a specific extraneous influence there. And what is very clear with Sony is that they stick with things for a very long time and are rather reluctant to change. Once they've set on something you know it'll stay that way.
