Probably because it's fun, has a diverse range of classes, is updated frequently with new content for free, has a unique art style and is well balanced.
No offense, but the last true update was a couple months ago, the only proper word we've gotten of anything is the WAR! update that is happening now.

VALVe are trolls by the way.
Considering the game is two years old, DLC every few months constitutes frequent updating.

And you do realise the WAR! update adds new weapons to two classes, new achievements and new maps? That's pretty substantial, especially since it's free.

I would say the classes them self's.
The Russian Heavy,The Drunk Demoman and The fact that the most evil class (sniper,we all had times were sniper's haunted our dreams... well... I did) is the most friendly... when he's not throwing piss at ya.

It is made by VALVe. Nuff said.
Its not made by Valve. It was a Quake mod that Valve turned into an actual game.

OT: It is a balanced game, however the main problem I have with it is that the learning curve is extremely difficult. I've been playing for almost 2 months and I'm no better than the day I layed my first match.

It's awesome for a lot of reasons.

1. Humor. http://www.teamfortress.com/movies.htm
Have you even seen the "meet the ____" videos?
People who haven't seen these videos are only experiencing half the game.
This is the reason that Yahtzee found Portal almost jesus-status.

2. Balance. It's balanced as fuck. Don't listen to the people saying "NOOB PYRO W + M1 LOLOLOL"

3. The constant updating and support (does not apply to XBOX 360 version). It costs $20 once, they're updating it as if it was a $20 per month MMORPG. The first version that came out is only 25% of the game now.

4. The plethora of User-Based content. The game has at least 500 user-made maps.

5. The massive amounts of strategy involved. http://tf2wiki.net/wiki/Main_Page + http://tf2wiki.net/wiki/Strategy
Read this on the classes that you find "slow and boring"

6. UNLESS IT'S A FARM.

Be sure to play on some good severs.
There are kajillions of 24/7 insta-respawn 2fort/badwater servers. Don't play on those.
Here is my favorite server:
http://www.gametracker.com/server_info/66.63.160.246:27015/
The only problem with this server is how often people are in the server.
They are commonly on at 8:00 PM to 2:00 AM Central Time
You can join this group (http://steamcommunity.com/groups/thelionsfriends) that sends events every time people start joining the server.
Ask anyone with a ">:3" at the beginning of their name about this server and any other questions you have about the game.

I love it because of the lack of cheap kills (i'm looking at you, COD). If you kill someone or get killed, you know it was because of skill. The humour is great (love hearing the Heavy chomping on that sandvich) and the updates keep it interesting. I've found the community to be generally pretty good, at least compared to some other games...

That would be the first TF. TF2 is 100% Valve, even though a lot of the original modding team worked on it for Valve.

The artwork is amazing, it's very well balanced, and it's one of the few muliplayer games that held my attnetion for so long. Close to 8 months of on-and-off play, in fact.

The cake heard that o_O

More seriously, each to his own taste indeed, persoonally it's the only game of the Orange box I can't get hooked on: it looks great, but I guess it's just not for me while I can go hours on gungame-mode CS:S or L4D versus, I suppose I'm more of a "shoot it 'till it's dead" type of gamer :D

You play as 9 different mid-20th century bloodthirsty stereotypes in working together in 2 teams to accomplish goals ranging from mass murder to briefcase heist. Oh, an in a pixar like template.

Oooh, that's fighting talk.

What makes Team Fortress a good game? If it was a bad game, we wouldn't be sitting here talking about it!

Let's have a video

Well, the gratuitous robot fighting is definitely a plus, particularly where Optimus Prime is concerned...

Oh, wait- wrong TF2. carry on!

I suspect that your interests are just more narrow. Which is fine, don't think this is a flame or anything. It's taste. You probably like the more realistic shooter, at least from the perspective of everyone having a gun that that is very deadly across a fairly large range, and you have to really perfect the small differences that distinguish between players. Meanwhile, in TF2, though the difference between a Machine Gunner and an SMG weilder might seem huge in another game, they look downright identical when you compare playing a Heavy to a Pyro. TF2 has much wilder, more varied, more niche goals. It's almost a little more like an action game filled with different attack, defense, and support classes. Its still a great game, but it sounds to me like you need more believability in your shooters.
