Apparently eating your meal when it arrives is in poor taste where I live, I wish that to stop NOW. Seriously, if my food arrives why am I supposed to wait three minutes before I start eating? Who decided this anyways?
What the fuck? Where DO you live :S

Apparently in some asian countries leaving a tip is considered bad manners. Not quite sure how that one works either -.-

People getting their children baptised even when they're non-practising christians/atheists
The reason for that (at least where I live) is because they want their kid to have a choice. There's a second ceremony in elementary school and a third in highschool. Only if you did all 3 you are a full blown christian and are you allowed to get married in church.
These parents have their kids baptised so they can later decide for themselves if they want to do the 2nd and third thingy. If their parents didn't do this the kids would simply not be allowed to do the other 2 even if they wanted to.

Wel technically you can still get baptised at any age but it's quite an ordeal, not to mention emberassing. (yes you have to actually get the water sprinkled on you head and everything. Dunno if you have to be nude though, god I hope not)

Ha you think thats bad? try listening to conversations starting with the line "Im not gay or anything but..." usually to defend gay rights in some way. makes me sick because right off the bat you are implying that there is something undesirable about homosexuality that you must distance yourself from

Agreeing with OP, but the example Id like to give is Jade Goody. This women was a racist, bigoted idiot, who became famous for being such a HUGE asshole on TV. However as soon as she gets cancer, thousands cry and say, "Oh It's So Targic :(", or "jAdE gooDY yUo ArE my Haro!", completely forgetting that she, was in fact, the kind of dumb ***** that lets humainty down. Bring back proper Darwinism, so she could have died a long, long time ago.

The entire concept of xenohate.
Yeah, I'm going to write a huge rant on this so brace yourself.

now, believe it or not, most people are above this, most religious peeps are fine W/ atheists and vice-versa. The same is true for literally EVERY difference in thinking. It's really the people you DON'T hear about that are good.

See, the stems of this problem are sensationalist media, and I'm not just talking about the newsmedia, I'm also talking about day-to-day communications, now people don't talk about what usually happens, people getting along you don't hear about because that's the norm. no, what is an event is what people talk about, and what is unusual is fighting. hence you only hear bad things about the "opposing faction". negative opinions follow, cycle repeats, over and over.

tl;dr, book-cover relationship. don't fall for it.

I'm trying to eliminate this, one little step at a time.

Move out of the states. Depending on where, but at most only 2 of those are a big thing over here in Sweden.

like for instance, before Michael Jackson died all I heard about him was pedophile jokes, left, right and center, now that he's dead he's no longer a dangerous man-child but a great man and tragic figure, "you shouldn't speak ill of the dead" people say, y'know who else died recently? Bin Laden, (I actually think it was kind of a funny coincidence that the US soldiers found Bin Laden about a week after the PSN went down) "crap we can't go online on PS3....I'm bored let's go find Osama" lol

also JOHN LENNON WAS NOT THAT GREAT!!

sorry for the ranting but I'm curious to see if anyone agrees with me about these things or what other societal peeves people have
OP states his opinions as fact. I wonder if there's a connection between this and the accuracy of some of OP's statements.

People have loved Michael Jackson for 3 decades. His death didn't convert any fans. And, last I heard, his child accusers, now all grow'd up, had come forward and said that their parents had pressured them into making the touchy-feely claims.

How about Ringo?

...so, what societal conventions do I hate? How about actual societal conventions?

Wearing clothes around other people. Really inconvenient and prudish.

Noise ordinances. If I can't sleep, no one in this neighborhood is going to sleep.

The persistent affinity people seem to have for live instruments. Ooo, you actually make music. I have a machine that makes my music for me!

Not being able to stand in my own second-floor window, minding my own naked business, and pleasure my own body while I watch my own passersby. This should be legal, like, faster than heroin.

People who expect me to behave :p

The fact that i have to be super nice to everyones kids that are running around in public like idiots. I shouldn't have to act all nice to your kids who run up to me in a restaurant. I don't like kids that's why i don't have them. You should keep your kids to yourself and stop them from running all over bothering strangers.

On a similar note: listen, its rush hour. I know you need to move your baby from A to B, but what happened to those little strollers you could fold up? Every day i have to squeeze past gigantic SUV strollers on the bus that take up three seats and the whole aisle. This isn't ok. It's selfish.

I second demonised nudity, sexual preferences being a problem, plus it being so hard to discuss a lot of related topics even with relative internet anonymity.

Another convention I hate is how it's considered impolite to disagree with someone, or just try to discuss the subject. If you do at worst you get insulted, at best you're ignored like a troll, to the point that I ended up acting and thinking like one.
I know we're all entitled to our own opinion, but when ones opinion is really proven to be harmful how entitled are you ?

(1)I also hate reciprocation. Some people are part of a persecuted minority and feel the need to defend every persecuted minority despite the fact that (2)they're not all looked down on for no reason. The other way round is even more despicable; when someone accepts your differences in the hopes that you'll accept theirs...except (3)theirs are despicable.
(1) I love reciprocity!

** both apologize to the earlier poster who said he hated people who used "big werds." **

(2) I would say that no minority is persecuted for no reason. They are, however, universally persecuted for shitty reasons, and persecuted by sub-human racist fucks. This should be a requisite for obtaining your piece of the pie: let's see how you treat other people.

(3) I would need elaboration on what differences you're talking about. Do you think Hip-Hop and soul food are despicable? Or are you referring to us Gypsies with all our baby-stealin'?

Why don't you try a little moxie?

"Excuse me! Ah, blah-blah-bleh, yeah, I know, whatever. Where are your parents? Oh, you're 'Mommy?' Mommy, would you mind controlling your child? I just nearly took his head off with my shopping cart, and I'd like to finish my shopping experience free of bloodbaths. 'Kay?"

I will not write a huge rant on this (I COULD, but it would go on a bit.)

Just watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ph3JiEsJM4&NR=1

And then consider the damage ANY FORM of organised religion has done to the world. We needed it to survive the dark ages yes, but now? It is just creating wars and holding back scientific advances. To paraphrase on the top comments on the above video -

"Given that we lived on an ultimately doomed planet, the fact that we try and remain blissfully ignorant by hiding in pretence of a benevolent God, is a one way ticket to a horrible fiery death and the extinction of possibly the only sentient life form in the universe."

A lot of people here don't seem to know the definition of feminism. Open any dictionary in existence and you won't find "The idea that women are superior to men" under the entry "feminism". All people who believe in superiority of any gender towards another are not feminists or whatever; they're douchebags. So when you talk about people that act like shit and expect something from you based on your gender, don't call them feminists because they're not.

fem·i·nism noun \ˈfe-mə-ˌni-zəm\
Definition of FEMINISM

1
: the theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes
2
: organized activity on behalf of women's rights and interests
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/feminism

In the past, women were regarded as less than humans; they were property of men and they had no access to education, they could not choose what they wanted to be or what they wanted to do with their lives. They were birth machines and a pretty scenery. People believed that a woman cannot think and have a logical reasoning, that she cannot be strong, smart or capable of anything more than bearing children and serving men. This continued for thousands of years, until a few decades ago we finally managed to fix things up a little. However, in many parts of the world, women are still being treated like they were treated in the past. A little bit of sexism sneaks in even in the western civilization, but generally, things improved drastically. Thanks to whom or what? Thanks to feminists (both female and male) and feminism. Thanks to that movement, I can go to college, I am not married and with five kids in my lap, I am now writing this and I have the right to be whoever I fucking want. And I am in full support of men who also want to be treated individually, not as a part of stereotyped group called "men", and I want the societal conventions that hover over men's heads to be gone just as I want those that are imposed on women to be gone too. Anyone who expects something from you based on your gender is either not worth your time or in dire need of education.

I expect anyone to hold the door open if I'm right behind them, not because I'm a woman and I can't open a door myself, but because it's considered outright rude to slam the door into my face when I'm right behind you. And just as I expect it from others, I do it for others, regardless of their gender. If someone drops something, I will get down to pick it up, because it's polite. If someone requires help, I will help, because it's polite. If I opened a door and someone is right behind me, I will hold the door open, because it's polite. If someone gets offended by politeness, they're rude douchebags. But if someone decides not to be polite in order not to conform to some imagined stereotyped "feminists", they're douchebags too.

OT: I hate societal conventions regarding gender (surprise, surprise!). ALL of them.

I hate the bullshit behind uni life, if you don't drink, party, cheat on your girlfriend/boyfriend you are a complete social outcast. I'm sorry but if that's what is wrong here I don't want to be right.

Also how much hype people get to being drunk and the glorification behind it. For example using multiple different terms for intoxication and using it as an excuse to be the most obnoxious kind of human being on the planet
And this. So much this.

Okay, get this. In finnish we have this one word, "neekeri". In english, I suppose it could be translated into ******. The translation is alright by me, it's pretty clear and logical. However, what the translation doesn't convey is meaning. The word "neekeri" is not racist, it's just a word used to describe blacks. I absolutely hate that people seem to get offended by it simply 'cos the english word is used as an insult. People seem to have lost all sense of cultural difference. If it's a bad word somewhere, it must be a bad word here.

Of course, this doesn't apply to everyone. I knew a black guy in school who got pissed at people for calling him "dark skinned" instead of "******". It takes longer to pronounce and just doesn't roll off the tongue. But still, celebrities and politicians all over Finland try to make the word come off as racist, and it's starting to rub off on people.

Also, I dislike that people think hawaiian t-shirts should only be worn during the summer. Also, why can't they be worn with skull-shirts? That's a kick-ass combo right there, let me tell you that.

The strangeness of having people you've never met come up close to you, hug you and possibly (since I'm a girl) kiss you on the cheek when you've been introduced at some kind of formal or family gathering.

It's called personal space. I have a bubble. Why can't we just settle on a handshake? I don't need cheek kissing.
Oh good, I'm not the only one that gets weirded out by that. And what's wrong with just a handshake? I don't know you, so why all the space invading?

OT: Small talk, not a fan of it, especially if I have to talk to someone that's a pretentious jerk. Since I have a social anxiety this is painful to me, what do you mean I can't just sit my table and be happy doing that? Why did you invite me in the first place then?

Also not a fan of being thwacked with other peoples religion. I mean if you are religious fine and I support and respect your right to be so. But it seems to be whenever I open my mouth on the subject that I am an atheist the lecturers and fired up mobs come out of the woodworks.

The bipolar sexist/racist attitudes of some people. equal implies literally that, equal. not above or below.

Still though..the pants thing is my major peeve...
