Someone calls you 'gay' as an insult, what's your response/thoughts?

I respond to it like I respond to any insult: I ignore it. Once someone has resorted to insults in an attempt to win an argument, it is immediately clear to anyone (or at least, anyone who's opinion is worth caring about) that you have won and there is simply no point in continuing to converse with this person.

I will say that I have a certain amount of respect for people who come up with content-appropriate insults instead of resorting to the (apparently) all-purpose Internet homophobia. I still won't talk to them, but I'll remember them as someone who may actually have a valid point and are simply having a difficult time explaining it. Frustration with your own inability to express yourself can result in an angry outburst.

If I'm not careful, I automatically respond with "limp dick", when clearly I meant to say:

"Now, see here, you whipper snapper! That particular slur is an attack on a person's natural predisposition! If I were to call you a '************', why, I'm sure you would take that as an affront! I know that you can't help but feel that way towards the person that birthed you, and I'm sure it's perfectly natural where you come from, but far be it for me to call attention to it.

...limp dick."

Then I adjust my monocle, rap my cane on the ground just so, and walk away, whistling a jolly tune, tipping my hat to passers-by.

I am reminded of my cousin, who use to frequently taunt about my being gay because of not having a GF. The only prospect of not interested was simply incomprehensible to him. Thus, as usually he began his little game, hilariously initiated because of the way I held a cigarette. Aye, apparently I was holding the cigarette gay. Make sense of that. Anyway, conversation went like this...

Cousin: "You're going to attract some gay guy in a tight white t-shirt"
Me: "That would be absolutely fabulous!" (stereotypical gay pose, hand wave and accent all included :D)
Cousin: "Dude eew"

Made it all the more amusing because my cousin is a complete homophobe. All the move, he never has brought up those taunts beyond a few seconds since, and that was some three/four years ago.

Well obviously i just say "Gay means happy herp derp!" and then look like an even bigger "******" than before.
Oh wait, thats not me.
Gay, fag and ****** are all slang. Maybe it didnt originally mean the same thing, but now it does. Thats how american english works, so you should just get used to it. Complaining about it only makes you come off as an annoying douche.

Although, to be fair, so does overusing those words.

It just means they've run out of arguments.

Rejoice in your victory, and let the spectators draw their own conclusions.

Well if it was over the internet I wouldn't care. They dont know anything about me so why would I be offended?

I would have just not responded because it's obvious he's just a fanboy with nothing interesting to say.

Also if I had seen that video, I'd give your comment a thumbs up too. Plus I'm sick of "those fans" (see I can do that too, haha) always calling me "one of those fans" because I don't like the werehog thing (actually I agree with you that not even the day bits of Unleashed were good) or the whole "I has a sword" game there. I don't even consider myself a fan of Sonic at all anymore to be honest. After playing the demo for Sonic 4 over and over and over trying to make myself like it but failing because I just couldn't get used to the new physics, I'm more than happy to just completely ignore everything else that will ever have Sonic in it forever. I don't even know what Sonic Colors is and I don't want to know. I don't care, because I'm not a fan.

Sure, I'll still play the Genesis games now and then, those are still fun to me. Maybe to some people that makes me a fan, but I just don't see it. I no longer give a crap about any new game with Sonic in it and if SEGA came out today and said "We're canceling all future releases and never making anything with Sonic or other characters from the franchise again" it wouldn't bother me even remotely. Is that a fan? I dunno, I do not think that is a fan.

A couple of time I have responded with "Yes, I am gay" even though I am not. I have a lot of gay friends, and I think it's important to them that people are aware that "yes, gay people exist, and are actually just like you in MANY ways," rather than people off in some distant land that are nothing like us. Don't accept the insult, not even with a glib remark of turning it back on them. Let them know that "gay" is not an insult.

'Got a thing against them punk?' Or something similar.

And maybe 'not my fault your Dad's a slut.'

This:
"There's nothing wrong with being gay. It's only a insult if it's to my sexuality and only then if I'm not gay. So by calling me gay you are admitting that you know I'm straight and/or that you are homophobic."

either that or:
"In your wet dreams."

I'd stick out my hand, palm facing down, and reply: "fabuulous, Yugi-boy".
But...Pegasus was just confused, and what about Siegried von Schroder? Look at the jet! Look at the suit! Look at the Hair!

OT: I'm not the wittiest type, so I imagine I'd just demean them for being so bloody silly.

Answer:
"What is that sandwich? Kill them all? GOOD IDEA!!!"

You see, heavy weapons guy quotes are applicable to every possible situation in real life.
