My goodness your pathetically arrogant, don't you have a Linux convention to go to, and stop bringing down what could be an intelligent conversation?

I stopped here because English is actually one of the hardest languages in the world to learn, because it's spoken backwards.
Say bone
say own
say goad
say code

English has the most fucked up ways of spelling and saying shit I have seen.

But to the argument, if it is a visitor to the country, I can understand not learning the language, but when you have lived here 22 years (Like my hispanic mother's friend) and don't speak a word of English... I truly have to wonder...

Note: This is not just about english, it's about common sense. If I go to live in Japan, and for years, never bother to learn Japanese, or one of the three writing styles, I would expect to be pimp smacked, and have my privates crucified for being so foolish.

what country is below america children? mexico, that's right! and most of south america is spanish speaking, so it would be logical for us to learn a language in which alot of people immigrate to. canadians learn english because America is right next to it. know your foe, kiddies.
They learn english because it's still part of the commonwealth and it's required.

don't forget to add japanese to that list aulleas. it is the language of business
That is true, Consider it added, however I'll admit that it's not as used as most people believe, certainly not as much as Chinese.

Also added to the list: Hindi. There are a billion Indian people in the world as well as Chinese, Hindi is a great language to learn.

i'm american, i speak spanish, chinese and english no it's not an american argument. In most european countries it's not uncommon for people to speak 2 or more languages. Just deal with it and stop being selfish.

Harsh. If our economy boils itself raw, which it may, like many central american countries have, and your only options are to struggle beyond reason or move to another country with a different standard language to provide for your family, you move there and see how easy it is to pick up a language you otherwise never would have considered learning. They're immigrants, not tourists. It's rude for a tourist to ship his ass to another country, decide to live there by choice, and then wander around yelling their language at the natives. It's not rude for a man who is forced out of necessity and rationality to all together take up root and try to make it in somewhere less likely to cause his family starvation.

Well I sort of agree with what you're saying (you think you have it bad, try living in Ontario, Canada) I think you sound like another Texan red-neck who hates anyone who fails to assimilate perfectly. Also English is NOT an easy language to learn, you just think that because you were born speaking it. If the transition is so easy, why don't you learn Spanish?

I went thru all four pages of this Thread and noticed that with the exception of a few people everyone seems to be for lack of a better word/phrase "not Mexican". Well I am and I also live in South Califorina, and even I get mad or upset when I see someone not be able to speak English, but you cant just "blame" Mexicans. Here in Los Angeles a large amount of people that also dont speak English are Asian. Both of my parents came here from Mexico and went to English classes and can speak it and understand it, granted that they never lost the deep Spanish accent but people understand what they are saying and can hold conversations. Hell my 2yr old understands and can speak English and Spanish words. Even though I agree that in order to live somewhere that speaks one language over another you should learn it if possible, people should also get off their high horse and accept that fact that times have and are changing and if you dont do something to keep up your ignorant and you shouldn't complain.

It's common courtesy to speak the language of the country in which you intend to reside. If I moved to any country on earth and refused to learn their native language and blend into their culture, I would ont be welcomed either.

I work a customer service job and I actually had some Mexican's daughter scream at me, "You love in America! You're supposed to speak Spanish!" in a very nasty way. I too can't stand it when people claim that Americans should learn Spanish. Anyone that comes to another country should adapt to that country's way of life - including learning the most prevalent language.

I also hate it when people cry, "Racism!" when anyone suggests making English the official, national language. There's nothing racist about it!

By the same logic as the OP, English is an imported language in America and everyone speaking English in America should instead be speaking Native American languages or go back to the country in which their language originated (England).

Also, English is hard to learn and I mean HARD and by that I mean hard as nails. One of the hardest languages in the world. Look at how many people born in English-speaking countries who can't even speak it correctly. What chance do you think someone from Mexico has got? If they started late in life, not a hell of a lot.

Of course in a sensible world people live and let live and respect other people's differences.

http://how-to-learn-any-language.com/e/languages/most-difficult-languages.html

This site has a list of different languages to learn. Unless I'm reading this backwards, english is pretty low on the list in terms of actual difficulty.

Never heard of this site before, so I'm unsure of it's credibility so take it for what you will

That site is utter rubbish. As soon as they posted French higher in difficulty than English I knew it was crap. French is a very easy language to learn, much, much easier than English, because unlike English, French language follows specific rules and formulas to the letter. English always has "exceptions to the rule", even stuff like "I before E except after C" is never a 100% scenario. That's why English is so hard - there are no consistently adopted rules for spelling or pronunciation, like most other languages have. You have to learn English almost on a case-by-case, word-by-word basis, much like Chinese Kanji (and even that has a better, more consistently-adopted system than English).

Exactly how many people live in china? 1.3 billion
Exactly how many people live in the U.S.? 300 million
I wonder why they have more english speakers? It can't possibly have anything to do with the difference in population.

If you put it that way. I wonder what people in China speak natively? Hmmm...
When I say speak, I also mean fluently. That's sad that another country whose native language is Mandarin, speaks more English than America.

Thats what I thought... until I started school. I would love to hear someone pretend to speak English though that would be a thing to watch.

You really love saying that don't you?

1.3 billion vs. 300 million. Gee, that's almost a billion more people that china has that america doesn't! I'd be crazy to assume anything OTHER than china having more english speakers. That's not sad. That's statistical probability.

EDIT
Although I have to agree with the fluency thing. Not many americans understand english. Hmm... I guess it is sad!

"I dun wanna learn a language. Why don't YOU!" That's pretty much what you're saying.
