The Righteous Brothers- Unchained emlody
Hendrix-all along the watchtower, it wipes the floor with the dylan version but kudos to him for writing it (and mr tambourine man)
The Byrds- Mr Tambourine Man
Jeff Buckley- Hallelujah
all of Elvis's covers (most of his songs ever)
the man who sold the world by nirvana on unplugged
I Fought the Law- Bobby Fuller four. This is the best version and the whole reason the clash ever heard of it

there's also a case for walk this way by run dmc, but i disagree with that one

Which is rather strange, because the original was a 50's rock and roll song.

I stand corrected. Anyway it's still better in my book.

Just making sure you had the right version of the original. Anything by the Clash is better than post-Buddy Holly Crickets.

All along the watchtower by Jimi Hendrix.

Nothing can beat it! It's simply too much epicness
agreed!

and I believe Lenny Kravits version of American Woman to be both epic and greater (if only by marginal marks)

Breaking Benjamin's cover of "Who Wants to Live forever" is really good. It was originally done by queen for the highlander movie.

Oh god yes. There's a reason the Clash has been called "The only band that matters."

Hurt by Johnny Cash, Tainted Love by Soft Cell, and One Night in Bangkok by Vinyl Shakerz (seems like the most subjective one)
not strictly related, but I really like Weird Al and The Device Has Been Modified by Victims of Science

I know I'm going to catch hell for this, but... Killswitch Engaged Holy Diver. Also Metallica's Whiskey In The Jar, Children of Bodom's Ghost Riders in the Sky and Oops I Did It Again.

"Killswitch Engage - Holy Diver" (I can't see why no one else wrote this one!) allthough the Dio original is pretty bland, if you were to compare them.

System of a Down's Metro comes to mind.
Also, Children of Bodom's cover of Oops, I Did It Again (Or any cover by CoB)
And Marilyn Manson's Tainted Love and Sweet Dreams.

I think the cover of Breed by Otep is better than the Nirvana version of the song.

Pretty much anything done by the Ten Masked Men...

A few examples:

Also, I've posted this one before, but it bears repeating...Nevermore's version of the Simon & Garfunkel tune "Sounds Of Silence"...

...amazing how well the lyrics translate to the totally different musical style.
