I personally prefer Marilyn Manson's cover of You Spin Me Right Round, to the original by Dead or Alive.
*snip* Marilyn never covered that song. You're probably thinking of the version by Dope. *snip*
Damn, I was hoping I'd get away with that... I knew Marilyn didn't do it but didn't know who did (neither did I have the energy to check last night).

All along the watchtower by Jimi Hendrix.

Nothing can beat it! It's simply too much epicness
agreed!

and I believe Lenny Kravits version of American Woman to be both epic and greater (if only by marginal marks)
Aww, you are so wrong my friend, The Guess Who's version is a million times better. It's one of the quintessentially American rock songs. I also disagree with anyone who says Johnny Cash's version of Hurt. The Nine Inch Nails' one is fucking chilling.

OT: The Beatles cover of Johnny B. Goode is pretty epic. I generally go by the rule that the original is always better. This is one of the few exeptions.

im certainly not going to disagree, but when I thought of it, yes it is one of they're greater songs, I still keep coming back to one blaring opinion "THESE EYES"..i love it so ;_;

I've got one! Careless Whisper, originally an 80s dance/pop song by the vocalist from Wham!, was covered by Seether as a joke when their label asked them to make a song for Valentine's Day (they of course reworked it into a hard rock song). Their version was a lot better (enough to end up on a "list of 5 best covers of all time" some publication had).]

I really liked both songs. Now, if you couldn't tell from the guitar intro of Seether's cover should instantly tell you that this is either a song from the 80s or a cover.

Jimi Hendrix and Bear McCreary's covers of All Along The Watchtower
Johnny Cash - Hurt
Machine Head - Hallowed By Thy Name
Thin Lizzy - Whisky in the Jar
Pantera - Hole In The Sky
Vader - Black Sabbath
System of a Down - Snowblind
Queensryche - Synchronicity II
The Fugees - Killing Me Softy
Billie Holiday - Summertime
Soft Cell - Tainted Love
Metallica - Mercyful Fate (Evil, Curse of the Pharaohs, Corpse Without Soul, Into the Coven, Satan's Fall)
Motorhead - Motorhead, Louie Louie, God Save The Queen
30 Seconds to Mars - Stronger BBC Live Lounge Session (and I fucking hate that band is how good that cover is)

...I could go on...
Thin Lizzy did not "cover" Whiskey in the Jar. That arrangement was an original Thin Lizzy composition, inspired by an Irish Folk Tale.

Also, I have to disagree on Hallowed Be Thy Name and Hurt. Iron Maiden and NIN did hose two songs perfectly as is, and although I think Cash did a decent job with Hurt, it still is definitely Reznor's pain.

Currently, I can only think of one cover I like more than the original, which is "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" by Guns N' Roses. I suppose "The Man Who Sold The World" by Nirvana was also a decent cover, but I don't really think it's better than the Bowie version. I'd say they're about even.

Also, I'm of the firm opinion that Big Blacks cover of Kraftwerks 'The Model' surpasses the original.
Have you ever heard Rammstein's cover of the same song?

In my own opinion, it surpasses the original. :)
