I am kinda pissed that this happened. I play mostly on my ps3 (online, anyhow), so this is really annoying. I'm more pissed that people are calling out Sony, claiming that they solely blame anonymous. Where in any report have they made such claims? I have yet to see it. I don't know why anyone is attacking them for it. I bet if XBL went down, people would be more sympathetic. But since it's Sony, everyone hates on them, it seems.
I can't even begin to wrap my mind around this statement. You're made because people are blaming Sony because Sony's PSN shut down? Isn't it... you know... like their job to make sure PSN doesn't shut down? Who should be blamed?
No, I'm mad because people are hating on Sony for claiming that solely Anonymous (rather than other hacker groups) is responsible. And the fact that they say it's an external attack has, too, been called out as bullshit.

*EDIT* Whoever is responsible is the one who should be blamed.

PSN shut down, and the world shut down for an entire day....not really

If anonymous says they didn't do it, they didn't do it we aren't stupid Sony

So it's either one of two possible scenarios:

An outside group managed to bring down their ENTIRE network in which case their security team must be utter shit for them to allow their whole network to go down. Meaning I'd be extremely concerned that it could then also be possible for an external group to get payment information as their security is obviously not up to par for such a large error to occur.

They have a very serious large internal error which shut down again, THE ENTIRE NETWORK, and this would lead one to conclude that the network set up by their software engineers is extremely flawed and is a very sub-par system.

Either way Sony comes off looking like a fool.

I'd say China did it, but only because they're busy knocking over Amazon's cloud. On the other hand, how that would have taken out PSN, well, I have no idea. Probably more like coincidence.

It's really, really tempting to have one big explanation like that... but I really doubt PSN is on Amazon's EC2.

Has Sony at any point in this stopped and said, "This is Anonymous' fault!".

Because I haven't seen that, yet.

Can we stop this "Sony is looking for a scapegoat in Anon to cover up their own incompetence" shit I've seen in related topics?
Exactly, I would like to know where people here are reading that Sony are directly blaming them. Either some people are reading something wrong, or they already have an agenda with Sony and are looking for any reason to lash out. People are jumping to way too many conclusions.

I seriously doubt it was Anon, the most they usually do is just a bunch of DDoS attacks, for them to actually SHUT IT DOWN THEMSELVES some serious security breach of their servers must have occurred.

I would rather that they shut down a gaming service for a few days than risk thousands of peoples credit card details get divulged to some hacker if its that's the case.

they're just projecting which falls under the latter (have an agenda with Sony and are looking for any reason to lash out.) its kind of sad really

To be fair I dont really want to know or do I really care who or what caused this, I just want to know when it's gonna be back up, even if it's just a guess that'd be better than nothing.

Anonymous attacks with the power of numbers. You cannot bring anything down without a raid. You cannot form a raid without an announcement. No announcement, no raid, no zerg, no hivemind. Not Anonymous. Try to get that into your thick skulls.

Most likely someone took a notice of Anonymous and is now attacking solo. So the information war is/was a success I suppose.

ONLY other option is that someone is fucking up at Sony or purposedly shuting their own systems down.

this makes me want to go play on my xbox for a bit. suck it PS3 owners.
No, suck it single system owners. Many people have more than one console and everyone has a computer, so your jab at PS3 owners does nothing but brand you as trolling fanboy who (now this is speculation) has to find a way to make yourself feel good about your decision to go with the 360. Then again, it's not just you but it seems that everyone that has one system feels the need to justify it by denigrating the others and their users.

Funny how all these attacks all happened after Geohotz posted the root key for the ps3.

I can't get over the fact that their were people supporting these hackers even on this very forum.

Geohot, look what you have done now, you made every basement dwelling nerd a viable hacker, which they then DDOS the whole system, thank you so fucking much Geohot.

I'm having a difficult time wrapping my head around your statement. Yes, it's American Airlines' job to do everything humanely possible to ensure that their airplanes land safely and in one piece at their destinations. But if a terrorist shoots one of those airplanes out of the sky with a surface-to-air missile, who should we blame? American Airlines?

I don't get this. If AnonOps is doing a massive attack on PSN via DDOS, wouldn't there be evidence of organizing from the myriad Anon sites? I doubt they are coordinated enough to to carry out massive attacks in total secrecy.
It's one of those idiosyncrasies of Anonymous' methods, you don't need thousands of nodes in a DDoS, you can actually do some damage to most systems with about sixty. Providing that Anonymous are being clever while they're doing this they could only have a hundred or so members, all of whom know each other.

I mean, as much as Anonymous like to do the 'we are anyone' thing they're not. They're actually a quite specific demographic mostly.
Huh. Thanks for clarifying. Though I would still say someone would have come forward claiming responsibility by now.

There is such a thing called "reading between the lines."
"Reading between the lines", is no grounds for a baseless accusations.

You can find hidden meaning in anything if you really want to believe there is something there. Sony hasn't come out directly and blamed them, and some people are acting like the have.

All these attacks do is make it easier for companies like Sony to carry out their plans...."let's let Sony know we do not approve of their stance on hacking by hacking them"
