Sony: iPad Will Make People Buy PSPs

Sony's Director of Hardware Marketing, John Koller, believes that the iPad launch will be a boon for the PSP.

Sony's top dog of hardware marketing, John Koller, doesn't view Apple's new tablet as a threat, on the contrary, he's rather pleased with the iPad, as he believes that it will be nothing but beneficial to Sony.

"Apple's entrance into the portable gaming space has been a net positive for Sony," said Koller, speaking to the Wall Street Journal. "When people want a deeper, richer console, they start playing on a PSP."

According to Sony's official figures, sales of the have grown year on year since the release of the iPhone in 2007, with nearly 42 million units sold worldwide. Sony still trails behind Nintendo by tens of millions of units however, suggesting that when people want a 'deeper, richer, console', they actually buy a DS.

Wishful thinking perhaps?

EDIT: However I just realised I reach to my PSP for that very reason...

Touché.

...umm...I have nothing against Mr. Koller, but I'm not sure I'm following his train of thought...

"...grrr I'm soo mad at the iPad...I think I'll buy a PSP, that'll show'em..."

I'd rather get a DS, no offense Sony.
I haven't seen a PSP game that has the same crack quality to me similar to Pokemon and Meteos yet.

hehe, brilliant.

I don't care for the iPad at all. Big lumpy brick thiny.

I like my PSP though. Guess he isn't that far off.

To interpret this logic "Nobody will buy an Ipad to replace something to game on, and it will likely get some people more into the handheld market".

Not sure if this is going to work...

Thats an odd statement to make. As much as I think that the iPad will flop, its not like the PSP is much of a success compared to the DS...

Besides I'm pretty sure a lot of people will buy the iPad for different purposes... Apple certainly haven't started marketing it for gaming purposes thats for sure.

Sounds decently reasonable to me, he believes the iPad will be a gateway console to the PsP, which makes sense because I don't see the iPad sating anyone's gaming appetite.

50 million (or 47 as the article says apparently) units sold compared to the DS while still being active and alive against the huge juggernaut is quite a success in my book.

Either way, I really don't see the iPad working. It's just one big iTouch, what's the purpose for it? Quite frankly I hope it doesn't succeed...

Wow, of course the get the DS, it costs less
It's not just that it costs less, but the PSP has much fewer good games than the DS.Maybe if the PSP had enough good games to count on more than two hands i would buy it over the DS.

The ipad isnt exactly supposed to be a gaming console though, it's for business men and the like to use for work. The games on there are for fritting away the time if you're bored and you feel like a quick game of peggle.

I honestly hope so. I might even buy a second PSP, just out of spite for Apple. I might even consider buying a PSPGO.

Wait no. No, I wouldn't.

Pspgo or ds? i think the choice is obvious...sony fanboys can't even defend their crappy lil portable anymore; they have a nicer, cheaper console to keep them entertained
