I lol'd at sony initially, but now I just feel sorry for them. Sony deserves better from its public whining about how their network is down.
It is down because Sony is trying to get the service working, not trying to get it back up. They could have put it up a day after they took it down but they'd rather find the flaws and secure their shit.
And, by the by, they were running up to date software as well.

And no, I don't own a PS3 and I don't plan to.

Yeah, I agree. I think it's funny that most people just want it up right now as if it being down was their biggest problem. Well, not funny. To be honest, I think it's completely stupid. The important thing is to launch a secure service when it's ready, not rush something out that is going to have gaping security holes left in it for the hackers to get back in through. It's like people don't even care that their personal information was quite likely stolen and their identity might be next. All they care about is not being able to play Killzone 3 and SOCOM. Learn to fucking prioritize, people. There are much bigger things for both you and Sony to worry about than when you can get back online to resume camping, teabagging, and throwing racial slurs everywhere (and yes, that happens on PSN too).

That's just as much speculation as the original statement that they were running old software in the first place. Just like how the guy (Stafford or something, I can't be assed to go look his name up now) admitted he can't be 100% positive of what saying, the guy who went looking around in Google archives for some server message on a Playstation site said he can't be certain he's right either.

Stop taking the latest rumor of the day and spreading it around as fact, please.

I really don't think the problem is that the network is down I think people should be angry that Sony failed to protect their confidential information not that they can't play online for a few weeks.

I'm angry at the people who fucked it up for the rest of us more than I am at Sony. That said, I can wait for it to come back online. Just make sure when it does, it's asshole-proof.

The only thing I've missed is not being able to play Metal Gear Online survival on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and it's not really that big of a deal. There's probably at least 10 good single player games to every good multiplayer game. And, SOCOM4 is no longer SOCOM, it's just a COD TPS and nothing more.

OT: Sony did their job IMO, they shut down the network to stop anything bad happening to PSN accounts. If you had a credit/debit card stored on Sony's servers, then you should've gotten a new card issued like over a week ago just in case, I know I did and I already got my new debit card. Should they have had better security? Probably.

I have to admire Sony's diligence, they don't just put up a small fix and call it good. I'm glad to see an overhaul. So as far as we know, they are doing internal testing. Which means they could be throwing every hack tool that they can find or even create. I hope it becomes a model of security for other networking companies.

That's work you do BEFORE you open your network, even if it's not available at launch. If the problem is so systemic that it has to be down for weeks, in a world where people freak out if Twitter is down for an hour, that is some bad mojo, friend.

As I've stated before though, nothing is 100% fool-proof and safe. That's just not going to happen. Malicious attackers (especially those who just want to steal identities) don't care what it takes to break into the server, they WILL do it. Even if it takes months of research and cracking. It's not like Sony can use some crystal ball and KNOW when shit's gonna go down, y'know?

As for "not informing customers until a week after".. We've been over this before. THEY didn't know the extent of the damage. THEY perceived it was a fault on their end, but they utilized at least THREE separate security firms to go over it with them. It was a MAJOR issue and it's going to take time to confirm details, report findings AND rebuild the entire system. Even if a PORTION of the system was hacked, rebuilding it from the ground up and securing it as best as possible takes time. Especially with that many users.

I don't deny that its impossible to make a network that is one hundred percent secure but that doesn't change the fact that they did fail to protect the information that was entrusted to them and I'm not saying that people should sell their PS3 or anything like that. Its just that people seem to have their priorities messed up I would definitely be more worried about identity fraud than not being able to play cod.

Oh, I definitely agree with you there.. I guess I'm not THAT worried about it. I only own a PSP. Yes, my card details were on my PSN account. I'm in Australia. Our banks have the competency to have fraud protection as standard for all accounts. It's not extra, there's no fee for it. They keep watch over any suspicious transactions and block the card until you call them, or they call you about it. My first Publisher's Club subscription for The Escapist was classified as "suspicious" last year. They called me, asked "Is this Themis Media transaction something you actually legitimately paid for?", I confirmed it and all was well.

Also, you can't just waltz into a bank and expect to walk out with a credit card, with zero ID. You need 100 points of ID (usually birth certificate/driver's license, etc).. Enough to prove that you ARE you. Apparently it's the complete opposite in the US.. You can just walk in with little to no ID and use whatever name/address for a credit card account.

If they have no damn firewall, they're software could be from the fucking future and it wouldn't make a bit of difference, now would it?

Bottom line is that this could have been avoided, had they just done the bare essentials of their job before this happened.
What makes you think they didn't? Has Sony publicly stated that they had no firewall? No. Which leaves me wondering how you know that to be a fact. Even the self-proclaimed expert who testified before Congress was making up facts about what security Sony did or didn't have in place. Just like you are.

I have a PS3, and I am waiting patiently for the network to come back. I'm not angry at Sony, nor have I ever been angry at Sony since this debacle started. Shit happens, even it to the best of us. If anything, I'm happy to have put my trust in a company whose diligence has been proven again and again in this whole fiasco: the urgency in hiring security firms, its constant stream of information to its customers, and the hard work going into the repair of the network to make sure its in tiptop shape (and more hacker-proof) when they do put it back on.

Oh, and the free stuff. I'm so excited for the pending freebies.

Agreed. I want Sony to be able to bounce back from this (because I would definitely drop coin on a PS4 if it was in the works), so the sooner everyone gets off Sony's back and let's them get their stride back, the better Sony's future will be.

I think I'm more annoyed at myself for not buying more singleplayer games. You can only play the modern FPS campaigns so many times. But hey, the upshot is that all the singleplayer trophies are done.
