Well, it's not April 1st so maybe there is some credibility to this--unless the dude who wrote this couldn't wait for spring trickery to start and decided that Halloween trickery was just as acceptable.

I want it really bad just to see how fucking ridiculous it is. Like having Sackboy fight Cole McGrath while Snake fist fights Crash Bandicoot. The only thing is that it is kinda hard to imagine a lot of these characters in a fighting game sorta universe. It'd have to be very unique and appealing to work.
Sorta like the Bar in that Micheal ad.
Haha yeah I guess so. The thing is, Sony has to use all of it's own first party games for the game, so I bet a lot of third party games will be left out.
Says who? Ubisoft let Ezio into Soul Calibur, who says they'd stop him going into Sony's thing? Valve would also be pretty open to the idea (just imagine Chell in a fighting game).

Sony still have a far better relationship with third party publishers than Nintendo, remember. If they thought it would help, they'd be a lot more open to third party characters.
You do raise an excellent point. I guess, if that's the case, then there may be a lot more third party involvement. I imagine the roster people really want though would be a bit more than Sony will deliver. Although considering it's a modern fighting game, they do have more room for more fighters.

Especially when you factor in the capability for DLC.
which is something the Nintendo aren't able to do. At least to my knowledge.

Yes I want this to happen.
Right now I want at least this roster:
- Kratos
- Nathan Drake
- Snake
- Cole
- Dude from ecochrome (there's always that one weird character)
- Radec from Kz2
- Sackboy
- Ratchet and Clank
- Nathan Hale (and maybe a chimera too)
- Sly (maybe the other characters too)

Feel free to add more.
Sony has a fricking mountain of characters.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony_Computer_Entertainment#Owned_franchises_and_properties

Arc
Ape
Ellen
Fat Princess
Kratos
Nariko
Ico
Cole
Jak
Jeanne d'Arc
Rico
Dart
Noa
Sackboy
Fortesque
Mod Racer
Stan
PaRappa
Jen
Ratchet
Rau
Chimera
Jaster
Wander
Sly
Sweet Tooth
Nathan Drake

That's 27 characters with no two characters coming from the same game using just the franchises and properties owned by Sony. Take note that none of these are Final Fantasy characters.

To put that into perspective.
Brawl has 36 characters. If you were to strip Brawl of characters from the same games, you would come up with 17 characters.

- Wander from Shadow of the Colossus
- False King Allant from Demon's Souls
- Zoran Lazarević from Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

Feel free to add more.
Bolded characters are my choices added to the list. I've got more, I'm just too tired to remember them. NightHawk21 got most of the characters I was thinking of, so I decided to add more to the list. :[]
Pretty sure Jak from Ja II and III would be a different character, not a different skin. Ones a mute platformer character. The other carries a gun and has an evil side that does kung fu.
...They're both Jak. They can play differently all they want, but the fact that they're still the exact same Jak from the exact same game universe has not changed. Jak fought without a gun before, he can fight without a gun again. Just because he uses one in Jak II and Jak 3 doesn't mean he's incapable of fighting without it. I fail to see why Jak II and Jak 3 can't be an alternate costume to the JaD Jak. Or the Jad Jak can be an alternate costume to the Jak II and Jak version of the character. Whatever the case, all 3 of them are the exact same Jak, regardless that he plays and acts differently in different games. Unless they're gonna be douchemongers and pull that Link/Young Link/Toon Link bullshit where you get three different characters with the exact same combat style with different speeds and strength.

My doubts about this are pretty big, but that's not going to stop me wanting to see the likes of Welkin putting a few rounds through Kratos.

That sounds... awesome but pretty fake. Well, if Sony gets one, can Xbox 360 get one too? Seeing Francis York Morgan duel with Marcus Fenix is something I would pay good money for.
But, I guess I can be contempt with being able to murder Nathan Drake with Kratos. York's incredibly-delicious-yet-scaldingly-hot coffee to the face attack will have to wait.
EDIT: JAMES SUNDERLAND. WE NEED TO HAVE JAMES SUNDERLAND AS A FIGHTING GAME CHARACTER.
You don't think James Sunderland would spend most of his time crying in the corner? lol

I vote for Harry Mason and his deadly kick. Nothing escapes the foot of doom.

Just... just don't give him a gun. Or a kid. He'll lose either.

Lots of doubt this will happen (mostly because of the different styles looking really weird), but I would express interest in it. I would be either playing Jak vs Ratchet constantly (so I could settle some nerdy bar bets, maybe throw in Sly too) or I could let out some frustration by using Jak to beat the snot out of Nathan Drake in response of why Jak has yet to make a GOOD appearance since the PS3's launch.

Love that they call this an "original idea"... It sounds like a bad idea to me anyway. SSM doesn't work because of the characters, it works because it's a really tightly designed game with a lot of creativity and ridiculousness. Maybe Sony Smash could do the same thing, but... ripping off another game is a bad start.

But they don't have the exact same combat style. JaD Jak is a platformer character with mainly hand to hand moves. Jak II Jak drives vehicles, uses guns and has his superpowered evil side. The two would play completely differently.
Do you forget how to ride a bike because you started driving a car? No. Jak hasn't forgotten how to use his hands because he picked up a gun. I really don't care if they're separate characters or alternate costumes. My point was that they're still the exact same character, regardless of their methods of battle.

Finally! Only took Marvel Vs Capcom and the other crossovers, Super Smash Brothers for Sony to catch on.

So let's have a look at the possible characters...

Nathan Drake; will be similar to Deadpool with wisecracks I expect, moveset akin to Chris Redfield.

Kratos; I can see being pretty versatile with all his trinkets. It will be interesting to see how gory, if at all, the game will go.

Sackboy; I expect the level building thing will be a theme - a lot of zone control.

Ethan (Heavy Rain); will sit in the corner and cry - increasing the amount of button presses opponents will need to execute combinations. No real power, just prolonging the battle with little weight.

Jak; Maybe a Dark Phoenix alike - with Dark Jak instead of the Phoenix.

Ratchet, Sly Cooper, Cole Mercer. There's actually quite a few characters when I think about it.

EDIT: Looking at other posts above, there's plenty of possibility. I'll wait for something a lot more tangible.

Oh, I see the problem here. I meant the two would be two seperate playable characters, while you thought I meant the Jak in Jak II was a sifferent Jak to the one in JAD. I meant this purely for the context of selectable and playable characters.
No. I knew what you meant, but the way you were wording it, you were treating them as two separate characters. My argument that they're the exact same character, despite their differences in combat method, is because that was my rationale for choosing to have them as alternate costumes, instead of separate characters altogether.
