Disregarding Mornelithe's [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/7.232466-Sony-We-Are-an-Innovative-Company#8172592] to-the-book definition of innovation for a second (though I agree, what a shock), I'd say they do more "innovation" for their games than their hardware.

I mean, any company that still houses Team ICO, even though both their games basically bombed financially, is a company that supports goddamn innovation!

innovate

to introduce something new; make changes in anything established.
?verb (used with object)

Personally, I agree, Sony's broken allot of new ground since entering the video games industry. And for the better, imo.
Ah well you got me there. By that definition they are pretty innovative, even if some ideas fail completely like the PSP-Go and Home.

Sounds to me like they're desperately clinging on.
PS3 is doing brilliantly at the moment, why would they need to be clinging on? ^_^

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.

I'm sorry, what?

Bahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.

And no, having innovative games on the PS3 only means that the 3rd party (read: NOT SONY) developers are innovating.

Hahahahahahahahahahaha

Of the numerous articles out there about it, here's one.

http://n4g.com/news/178585/quakecon-carmack-dishes-dirt-on-sony-and-microsoft

MS Charges more for games on multiple discs.
irrelevant, this is cause by external factors and more of the "gaming policies" stench about it.
There was no need for DVD sized discs in gaming, when it came out. And look at where we are now. I really just don't get your argument, I mean, are you really complaining that developers have 4-5x the storage space to deal with, on Blu Ray? Why, exactly? Consumers don't foot the bill for the extra costs of a Blu Ray disc. So, how exactly does this effect you?

EDIT: By the way, given the 360 has 3 cores, the PS3 has 6, that's a pretty lame argument also. But, I'll bite, the reason you want more cores, is more processing power for game engines to draw from. Quite simple actually. Here's an example, GTAIV utilizes 3 cores for most of the games engine, and uses the 4th for Physics processing. Of course, this requires developers to create multi-core engines, which are becoming more and more common as Dual/Quad Core CPU's become the norm. The point though, is more performance, as always.
I'm not complaining about anything, I'm just stating the fact it's not mainstream, I have no negative or positive agenda about it.

and I know and dont care. I was talking about PC gaming, GTA IV was special which ironically did nothing special at all.

Again, opinion, you may not be able to take care of your property, but others certainly are. Claim it's a wise investment all you like, but everyday people don't have 1200-1500 to drop on a single harddrive. Eventually, just like Blu Ray, SSD prices will come down dramatically and it will become far more logical and justifiable for people to purchase, over optical storage alternatives, but right now, 500g for 1200 bucks is retarded.
Disc: crack,smash,scratch,melt and degrade
SSD drive (modified): EI

If you got the money, it well worth it otherwise it's down to personal preferences (like you've stated)
I've been asking myself what the hell you've been arguing for quite awhile now, and I still have no idea. Blu Ray is as special as DVD's were when they replaced CD's, not everyone was sold on the idea that we needed that much space, but viola, look at us now. The point of this argument is Blu Ray is certainly an innovation on preexisting optical laser technology. The fact that you argued against it is just plain astounding.
you misunderstand.
If I cannot judge technology by it's main factors:
*cost
*reliability
*efficiently
*effectiveness
then this argument is over.

Blue-ray has never been an innovation, HVDs are an innovation.

A while ago I watched a video from MovieBob's gaming blog "The game overthinker" where he analizes Sony's big succeses in the console market arguing that their biggest advantage in the last two generations lied in their oppononents mistakes, rather than their capacity for innovation.
Bob is kind of too nintendo-infatuated for his own good but the video itself is very well done. I encourage you to watch it.
He's a self-professed Nintendo fanatic, to be sure, but he also called out Nintendo for its major, major faults in that instance. For however MovieBob bashed Sony, he bashed Nintendo to what I felt was an equal degree.

Well, they're trying at least. And even succeed every now and then. Which is certainly more than what Microsoft and/or Nintendo can hope for.
Are you saying that Nintendo hasn't suceeded in their innovation?
What about:

Shoulder buttons,
Analogue sticks,
Vibration in controllers,
Motion controls.

All of these devices (apart from the recent motion control) have been commonplace within gaming and are now standard.

Look at your controller of choice and think that without Nintendo half of those features wouldn't be there
Perhaps in the past, but they don't seem to have the same motivation these days.
Exactly. That perfectly explains the Wii motion controls, the DS touch screen and the 3DS autostereoscopic display......Wait.

I am sorry, but if anything, Nintendo has introduced more innovations to gaming nowadays than they ever did in their previous years.

Wow, people are quoting me a lot on that. OK then, let's paraphrase.

I'm not denying they have done a lot in the hardware front. More than anyone else. But my question is this: What exactly have they brought new when it comes to actual games?

Their hardware is new and exciting, but they never make the most of it. 3rd party developers are making the most of both the Wii and the DS. And I'm pretty sure that 3rd parties are going to make the most of the 3DS as well. Nintendo hasn't introduced a new IP in decades and the last big advance any of their existing ones did was back in 1996 when they made the jump to 3D with the N64. Sony is doing much more than Nintendo in the software front.
