Nope. In fact the first Space Marines were the Crimson Fists, they were the force that started off the franchise. By 2nd ed the Ultramarines got their own codex (but it was like the modern Space Marine codex which it would be used for most of the chapters) but during 2nd ed it was the Blood Angels that were the frontmen, it wasn't until 3rd ed that the Ultra's became the front men and they have been ever since.tycho0042 said:The fury mode I'd believe. I'm stating my opinions on the matter the way a person should, not cruise control for cool with their caps lock stating random facts that probably aren't even true. Maybe I am a bit serious, but that's the point of discussing, if you wanna troll and look stupid, you can do it somewhere else .-.Waaghpowa said:I was kidding, and you're taking this way too seriously.Spencer Brelje said:Bro...Just...Go away. I thought the Blood Angels in Space Hulk were first. I've never actually looked that closely that far back in 40k history.Warforger said:Nope. I figured people would get the irony considering many comments regarding this "Ripping off Gears of War" have people mentioning the fact that if something is a TPS that uses cover, therefore it must be ripping off Gears. By that logic, every TPS game is ripping off Max Payne because it did TPS first and you, occassionally, used cover, and so on. I'm well aware that Max Payne isn't the first, but the comment itself was meant to be as absurd as the "Everything ripped off GoW" claims.Spencer Brelje said:I'm stating my opinions on the matter the way a person should, not cruise control for cool with their caps lock stating random facts that probably aren't even true. Basically what he said.Magicmad5511 said:I really don't see why they must continuously compare these two games. The only similarity between them is they use the third person camera and the main characters could be classified as Space Marines. Many games use third person and Warhammer 40K space marines came first.
Why are you so angry? At least the OP didn't come off like a raving lunatic.SmashLovesTitanQuest said:He mentioned it in passing. Fucking wow. Thats exactly what I expect from a written review, small flaws tend to get pointed out. But I guess because its precious fucking Space Marine thats simply not right anymore, is it? Look at the end of the review, where he actually gives it a score. No word of controls.
Also, I love the guys who are saying HURR WARHAMMER WAS THERE B4 GEARS DERP. That not the point. Are you guys really incapable of forming a coherent thought? Hes saying the gameplay is similar. Which is also a completely fucking valid point.
Ah, fuck it, everyone here is determined to blindly hate on any reviewer who doesnt welcome Space Marine as the second coming of Christ, what can you do. Is the Escapist review out yet? I bet they score it somewhere in that range too, make the same points and everyone praises them for the fair an unbiased critic.
Having played both games I disagree with the similarity of gameplay. Gears is all about diving for cover and taking potshots at semi distant enemies, Space marine is about emptying a clip or two into foes before charging headlong into the fray and butchering them wholesale. Honestly I feel its closer to god of war in that way than Gears. (although probably closer to devil may cry without the acrobatics)SmashLovesTitanQuest said:He mentioned it in passing. Fucking wow. Seriously though, the reviewer gave it a 7/10 and all his points were more than valid. Could you point me to the place where he said, literally, that its a "gears ripoff"? Maybe im missing it. Because all I can find is this:
Which is... Well... PERFECTLY VALID AND COMPLETELY FUCKING RIGHT.At its simplest, Space Marine is a Gears clone with a hair-raising health system which sees you healing by performing execution kills. Given how flagrantly Relic apes the Epic juggernaut elsewhere - weapons are swapped via the same D-pad system - being unable to stick to cover feels unnatural at first, but you soon acclimatise. New cannons and a Fury mode unlock at half-hourly intervals as you progress through corridors and arenas, nabbing Servo Skulls (Warhammer's audio diary of choice) to flesh out the plot's few secrets.
TL;DR: Stop whining, write your own review if you disagree, dont write off a reviewer just because he doesnt like a game you do, or rather, just because he doesnt like it as much.
Fucking hell, he gave it a 7/10 for fucks sake. If you seriously think that Space Marine deserves more than that... Jesus.

War for Cybertron? Actually, you're damn right! There's more similarity between Space Marine and War for Cybertron than Gears.Tohuvabohu said:I think the gameplay resembles Transformers: War for Cybertron much more than Gears.
As for the art style, yeah W40k started it obviously.
I'm sorry for your loss.Blaster391 said:Some of us don't have Gears Of War here. (PS3)
So to be honest I don't really care.
I'd take it a step further and say that Space Marine is a Doom clone because you are a space marine with guns killing aliens level by level and checkpoint by checkpoint. While I'm at it, Inception is nothing but a Matrix clone and Limey is nothing but a Pulp Fiction clone. Parasyte is a generic manga and Samurai Champloo is a rip off of Samurai X.CrashBang said:Okay. Yes, Warhammer was around long before GeOW but I've played the Space Marine demo and I agree with OXM. Every second of gameplay felt like a poor copy of Gears; it was a third person shooter in which you play a big bulky man armed with a large gun and melee weapon. You're part of a small team of bulky men, you wade through enemies on a linear path, rinse and repeat. Granted it didn't have GeOW's cover system but I'd put that as a point against it, rather than in its favour. I don't care if the mag is biased (I see no evidence of that, btw) or if 40K came first, this game seems to just be another average third person shooter with no attempt to do anything unique.
