Officially there are no female Space Marines. All of the original Space Marines were male, as far as we know, as were all the known Primarchs; this means that the process for creating new Marines was designed solely with males in mind and any consideration of changing this, without the utmost secrecy, would be considered the ultimate treason against the Emperor's design.

Some people have created their own chapters which include or exclusively field female Marines, such as the Fighting Tigers of Veda, and there is nothing stopping this being done if you put some effort into their background, just don't expect Games Workshop to ever start producing models.

Sisters of Battle are not Space Marines but a tribe of warrior-women brainwashed into being the personal guard of a corrupt Imperial governor who were subsequently redeemed into the service of the Emperor as the fighting force of the Ecclesiarchy.
This means that they are still human but receive some of the finest equipment available in the Imperium, e.g bolt weapons and power armour, hence the similarity to Space Marines.

As for what female Marines would be like - almost exactly the same as the men really.

Apparently we need a lesson about the Imperium, here.

"Space Marines" in Warhammer 40,000 are the warriors of the Adeptus Astartes. They are genetically engineered from young human males. They cannot be engineered from human females.

Now, please stop feeding the trolls.

Yeah but if they could be 'engineered' what do you think they would be like?

As pointed out above, it's not a matter of traditional gender roles and whatnot in the 40k universe, it's the fact that the gene therapy and numerous implants that Adeptus Astartes recruits have to endure only work on males. They're not just big dudes in power armor, they're exceptionally strong individuals who have undergone extensive modification to make them the closest thing to the Emperor (physically) that mankind has to offer. They have secondary hearts, they can absorb information by eating brains, their rib cages are a solid plate of interwoven bone, they live for literally centuries (the oldest Dreadnaughts were fresh-faced recruits when the God-Emperor himself was up and walking around), etc.

That's not to say that females are marginalized in the 40k universe. In addition to the aforementioned nuns with guns, there are plenty of female PDF/IG forces and assassins (Callidus assassins are almost exclusively portrayed as females), inquisitors, navy officers, psykers, and of course countless trillions of citizens who spend their entire lives toiling at the behest of the immortal God-Emperor of Mankind.

And again, if Space Marines could be female, they would be exactly the same.

You should be kicked in the face for posting that video and horrible meme. The Sisters of Battle are the women of the internet, err, I mean, space. They aren't as badass as the imperial commissar though.

They certainly wouldn't be buxom. Boobs would get in the way. So it'd be pointless. Besides, they can go join the Imperial Guard if they really wanted to fight.

Are you telling me that in Warhammer, WARHAMMER, Space Marine girls would not have boobs?

YES. Boobs are not a strategic asset. Pretty much all body fat is done away with. Space marines don't even have to take their armor off to go to the bathroom because their bodies produce so little waste. Space Marine women would have female names and call each other "battle sisters" but they would look and act exactly the same.

Sure they would. They'd just be flat. It's not like Space Marine Power Armor was made with women in mind, and I'm pretty sure they're out of production.

Though I'm not positive on that last bit.

Anyway, why are you saying 'warhammer' so accusingly?

Okay, you're right but if they did bring them in they would have boobs, just look at WH's target audience.

Edit: I am part of that target audience.

I remember reading something in one of my past history classes about female archers lopping off breasts so they could get a better draw on their bow. mby same kind of thing applies to guns?

I can shoot guns just perfectly fine without the need to burn or cut off my boob, thank you very much. I can shoot more accurately than most guys anyway. ;-)

The problem is actually down to the biology, rather than the gender.

Male structure and physiology is built on withstanding impact and has a few mutations from the original female specifically to cope with that.

However, given that female bodies are (generally) lighter, more resistant to biochemical reaction, more able to multi-task etc. there would ALSO be female Space Marines, but used for Psykers/Ghosts etc.

Thing is though, given they are likely to be grown/engineered, they're likely to be close to the genders we recognise. Body hair, for example, is a detriment to Marine efficiency, so, at the genetic level, snip!

Frontline troops are expendable males. As is in most animals.

Meh. It'd be like it is with dwarves. They would be there, you just wouldn't be able to pick them out :p.

Spare time? Hmm...Training and talking about how awesome the Emperor is, I would guess.

That's about right.

(This used to be on the official site in another form, not sure if it is now)

Apparently they receive around 15 minutes of "leisure time", "to consider the magnitude of their duty to the Emperor", daily.

That is definitely something that they would do (or most likely, have done to them.)

Neosage: Warhammer 40k has to be one of the most unsexualized IPs out there. Anything that the Dark Eldar or Slaaneshi cults do is totally in-character, and not done just to sell stuff.

Besides, Dark Eldar and Slaaneshi sexuality tend to involve lots of pain and agony on their 'target audience.'

In America, women are not allowed in infantry for either Army or Marines. It's based on certain aspects that most women are not comfortable with(e.g. having a shit-hole where people can see you).
