The real craze began with Cameron's Aliens, and I have to say I always loved the idea, but it failed to evolve very much. Every space marine game is rife with stereotypes and ripoffs. Doesn't make the gameplay less enjoyable, though.
EDIT:
Space marines, if the "marine" part has any meaning, would be "amphibious" units, in this case space-ground units. To tell the truth, I haven't seen much space marines in space yet, fighting in zero-g and stuff. Mostly because loading your spacecraft with ground troops when battles will be decided with shipboard weapons is a bad idea. Okay, there's the opening of Halo and not much else.
The "marine" part of the name is a direct ripoff from Warhammer 40K and Aliens' colonial marines, which I suppose DO fight in space. It's applied to game protagonists without much thinking, though.
EDIT:
I think those weren't technically marines, but Mobile Infantry. Something like special forces. And in the film, they're more like the Army.brodie21 said:i like the original space marine, invented by Robert A. Heinlein in his book, Starship Troopers.
