The real craze began with Cameron's Aliens, and I have to say I always loved the idea, but it failed to evolve very much. Every space marine game is rife with stereotypes and ripoffs. Doesn't make the gameplay less enjoyable, though.

EDIT:

i like the original space marine, invented by Robert A. Heinlein in his book, Starship Troopers.
I think those weren't technically marines, but Mobile Infantry. Something like special forces. And in the film, they're more like the Army.

Space marines, if the "marine" part has any meaning, would be "amphibious" units, in this case space-ground units. To tell the truth, I haven't seen much space marines in space yet, fighting in zero-g and stuff. Mostly because loading your spacecraft with ground troops when battles will be decided with shipboard weapons is a bad idea. Okay, there's the opening of Halo and not much else.

The "marine" part of the name is a direct ripoff from Warhammer 40K and Aliens' colonial marines, which I suppose DO fight in space. It's applied to game protagonists without much thinking, though.

Tyranids 4 Life yo.

Don't mind Space Marines really. Everyone complains but they seem to work. Halo's a huge success, so is Gears. They have no more 'emotion' than say...Soap from Modern Warfare, or Gordon Freeman from Halflife (OH SNAP ************ I WENT THERE). In fact, since Master Chief/Marcus Fenix actually speak, one might say they have more character than Dr. Freeman. Ouch.

As for the 40k marines, the Nazi comparison is kinda flawed, as it's rather clear it's meant to be based more off of a fanatical Roman army than anything else.

In 40K I tolerate them. Most of the time.

Its simply the fact that whenever there's a new edition of rules the Space marines are always the first to be updated. This oftern has ment that there are armies who haven't received an update since the second edition. (Dark Eldar I'm looking at you) Or that one of their new units out does another armies speciality (Space wolves' psycher I'm looking at you)

[my appologies, I'm in a bit of a 40K rage mood]

Because SPESS MEHRENS HEV FEHLED DE EMPRAH!!! Also because they are Catholic Roman Space Nazis - i hate those guys. And then there are Ultrasmurfs. And nihilism. And brick-faced seriousness. And Emprah.

As for "generic" space marines of videogames, well. They're just too generic and bland, don't even have any intresting character traits.

In summary: i prefer Lombaxes.

As always, thank you for your time and posts.
They shouldn't have invaded Space-Iraq for Space Oil. There were no weapons of Space destruction.

I'm a bit of a Space Pacifist you see. Just because people don't share your Space Ideals it doesn't mean you invade their Space Space. Personally I consider their Space Expansion akin to old Space Colonialism. Not that I'm blaming the Space Marines themselves, more the higher ups in the Space Command, but still you've got to look at some of their Space War Crimes and think...How did they pull the trigger on that bolter?

Space Marines are a group of order stuffed religious freaks while the Chaos Space Marines are insane, uncontrollable ball of fun. I simply see it like this:

Religious vs Insane = Insane winning.

Interesting, if everyone hates mainstream, how do things become popular enough to become mainstream in the first place? Anyway, I do not mind the space marine protagonist as long as he (or she) is an interesting character. The recent trend seems to be characters that people need to relate to, but I feel that many developers approach this with the wrong way by making "blank" protagonists for people to project into, and that makes for characters who do not speak or show any emotion at all, which loses the whole identification concept. Blank characters are not relatable because they are not realistic. So, as long as a character has an interesting story, has a definite personality, and actually exhibits some emotion, I will find them a likable character (space marine or not). Space marines are fun characters as long as they are done well, just like any other character.

I don't mind them. It's just that games and media tend to make them shallow and predictable. And thus the game or movie which they are by proxy the hero in becomes shallow and ULTRA predictable. Betting on the hero saving his girlfriend, the planet and destroying the enemy in a large explosion involving a helicopter is like betting on the sun rising. Unless something is genuinely wrong both are bets that you aren't going to lose!

In short: Over exposure.

In Long:
It isn't so much the hate for the space marines themselves, it is because they have become the stock and parcel of so many 'sci-fi' games out there. This wouldn't be much of a problem if they had more depth and intelligence then 'we are space marines, this is our gun, it goes bang...' mentalities. Most are so stereotypically stupid too that one has to wonder if they are insulting the modern day military as some sort of hidden political message in these games. Even the ones which are not stupid are still nothing more then a suit and a gun, designed to be expendable pieces that get easily chewed up by the equally stereotypical 'bug' creatures. The only difference is they get a witty one liner first!

All I can fathom is we developed cloning and every single marine in the future is going to be a carbon copy of each other... oh, and the process will be designed to retard them to the point they can barely function.

I like them. But I like aliens even more.
I mean, they compare favorably in my opinion to realistic shooter protagonists.

Read the Dawn of War book? They're absolutely harsh to everyone. The main character gets given a daemonhammer from an inquisitor and then gets annoyed when the guy asks him for it back. Also, they answer all their problems with exterminatus.

The Space Marines think too highly of them selfs, everyone in the imperium knows its the imperial guard that defends the borders. And flak armor+flash light>power armor

Blood Angels are plain overpowerdness with the new codex, and everyone and their mom collects space wolfs / smurfmarines.

Grey Knights are fine though (proving theres people even too snobby and arrogant to be a regular space marine...

Oh well, generic faceless heroes in games / movies? Thats not them space marines fault, you don't need power armor to be generic (will smith, I'm looking at you)

Also, on the subject of 40k, if I had the money to blow and the time and attention span to spend constructing an army, I would play as the Imperial Guard because they are just ordinary men fighting against the worst the galaxy has to offer with nothing but a flack-jacket and a lasgun. But for now, I will stick to playing the Guard in Dawn of War. It's far cheaper, and if I decide I want to play as orks for a bit I can.

For one, I hate fattie armor SPCAE MA-RENES. I like almost every other faction but them for several reasons. They tend to be easy to play, over powered as fuck and tend to be almost as thick as fucking orcs with the english language. It is almost impossible to lose as that faction with the amount of shit you get and how powerful everything is. Meanwhile the Guard gets shit and they still kick fucking ass! So yeah! Take that! The Emperor will always favor the Guard as they win by numbers and fear, not fattie armor and blind loyality.
Im willing to take it you are talking about Warhammer 40K and that you know next to nothing about the actual back-story of the space marines. The space marines in 40k are not just "dudes in armor" as so many people tend to think. The are actually closer in asthetic to warrior-monks fighting to protect the empire of the god-emperor of mankind. There is a MASSIVE religious side to them.

I belive that in discussions such as this one there should be a clear distinction between the two major types of Space Marines:

1. Space Marines, as in generic soldiers in sci-fi settings. These range from the Doom Marine, through Marcus Fenix and his pals to Master Chief. Basically, big, bulky, prefferably silent. They have become an all too common source of protagonists for the deluge of ever-so-generic shooter games. They are the poster children for lack of imagination.

2. Space Marines, as in FOR THE EMPEROR! Reffers to the genetically engineered super soldiers of the Imperium in the Warhammer 40k setting. These guys predate the other popular space marines and even modern gaming as we know it. They are more along the lines of Medieval Knights with Large Guns, both in visual design and background lore.
