Since I am in the US Army I was going to ask why the heroes in Space Games are always Space Marines as opposed to Space Soldiers, and then I remembered they are attached to some kind of Space Navy always and are thusly Marines. Dumb I know, but there you go.

Otherwise if I lived in the future, I'd totally be a Space Marine.

I assume people hate Space Marines because they'd rather play a game with a 14 year old protagonist who wears short shorts/or skirts, and needs to learn how to love or some such garbage. (And they usually are a bit androgynous and have bad hair and clothing...)

And of course there are the types who want to play the f---ing monsters that will rip Space Marines apart in obligatory cut-scenes and do horrid things to the aforementioned androgynous 14 year old protagonist. (RE: See Hentai...)

Having just recently got off a short suspension, countering with my own generalisations about those who do want to play as Space Marines probably isn't conducive to a continued forum stay. I will however say that your assumptions are likely wrong.

I dunno, they're space marines. I, personally like them, in most cases. Never really liked the 40k army. I mean, those guys just get too much attention, and I always thought they were the most boring army of them all.

I don't hate Space Marines, but I do hate the complete overexposure they get, especially in 40k. Being the poster child of 40k means they get updated more regularly than other races (Dark Eldar), plus there's so many of them!

"Should we upgrade one of the Alien races next? Noo let's upgrade one of the FIVE SPACE MARINE CODEXES!"

Also 40K Lore only seems to apply to them and no one else. As an Eldar player, it's galling to read how the Eldar are supposed to be a lot more technologically advanced than Humanity, but they can't seem to give their good guns, nor can they produce a plasma weapon small enough for a person to carry.

So I hate the attention they get, not them.

It was a joke, and if they ban me for it, whatever. Thank you for the concern however.

As for why people hate Space Marines? Aside from my theory about that audience largely being JRPGers... I'll go with at least a slight anti-authoritarian bent, coupled with a distaste for characters who are shockingly similar, (Weird how that actually happens to people in regimented life...) and lastly a distaste for the hypermacho. Though to be honest, if you dislike the Hypermacho, games with guns in space/alien worlds are largely not for you I suspect.

Thats my opinion anyway. Couldn't they do a cool name? I mean, Necrons has a cool name. Eldar have a cool name... Chaos Space Marines have... Well, the same name with a Chaos glued to it and that sorta sucks, but you get my meaning here?!

*pointing out she's been playing the tabletop game for ages and despite this never really liked the videogames made for Fantasy and 40,000...*
Being an Eldar player, I sort of agree with you. I like the Space Marine's armor and weapons (and their voices in the Dawn of War games are awesome) but maybe they should just be called by their nickname: The Angels of Death.
That'd be so much cooler.
Nerd spergin here, but the official name of the Space Marines in 40K is The Adeptus Astartes. Yes, it means space marine, but it still sounds cool.

They have been a little over done lately. Plus they are often shown as overpowered morons that never die. Like anything they can be done well or badly.
I'm tired of seeing Westerns with Japanese influences (Samurai Western, Red Steel 2, etc.)

Let's have a new genre...how about...

1: One of the 300 Spartans in WW1

2: A Pirate who fights robots in feudal Japan

3: Adam West as James Bond fighting Mr. T

...yeah, I ran out of real ideas after the first one...

*Steals #2 and proceeds to write "Shogun Ninja Pirate" (actual name pending...)*

I can't really explain much of it, unless there was a particular iteration of the space marine someone liked (say, the guys from Aliens) and that everything else seems a copy-and-paste of that. Don't know and don't really care.

Indeed! I actually prefer refering to them as such, but many new players and collectors have no idea what you mean when you say it. Space Marines is too grown into their minds...

Space Wolves, Emperors Fist, Salamanders, Blood Ravens, Grey Knights, Black Templars, White Scars, and why not, the Ultramarines.

Green iz Best though.
Quite, but note how they dont use these very cool names! They use Space Marines. This is the name people know. When they see an Ultramarine or a Grey Knight they still go "hey, Space Marines!". See? The silly name is there! And yes, green is indeed best. Orks never lose!

Uhm. What? Also, I love the Chaos gods, I love the demons and the soldiers and the war machines. What I don't love is the "Space Marines" on the end! Why can't they JUST be Chaos? That's what most people call them anyway!

No idea. Although I'm more of a fan of the Chaos Marines over the Space Marines (guess they are just cooler in my opinion), but I like the Space Marines as well. I guess its because the majority are into pokemon instead. (yes, I am making fun of the number of pokemon threads :D)

When subject matter is abused into countless shovelware titles it's only natural to garner disdain, also halo sucked and anyone who's not a racist 12 year old knows it.

Honestly, vanilla space marines are *boooooooring*. No fluff, no personality. Take a major named chapter instead. Monkish, brooding Dark Angels. Angelic but damned Blood Angels. Mongoloid White Scar.

Or, flavorful of them all, Space Wolves. We're not really space marines, we're Norse Warriors in power armor.

Hey, man.
I may be against some of the repetitive games that have them starring in them, but do NOT, do NOT say that I do not support our Space Troops. Where would my family be if it weren't for all the space blood they shed for my freedoms in space.

First I will mention I am a big Warhammer fan so you'll understand why I've put this.

1. Warhammer 40k space marines are the true and only space marines and that is there simplified name.(actual name being Astartes/Adeptus Arstartes)
2. the term "space marine" outside of warhammer is used to describe testosterone junkie muscle men in giant suits of armour with big gunes.
3. in response to t-rexaur's comment Eldar are brilliant and are better equipped than humanity because they have better specialized troops and better vehicles. And the game is based from the IMPERIUMS POINT OF VIEW!

And yes I am a sad B*****d for taking my time to right this post and showing how much of a geek I am!

A space marine is somewhat cliche now, with Halo, Torok, Gears of War (sort of), and Aliens sporting the title of Space Marine somewhere.
