Why, that's so crazy it might... might just be possible! You know, I would totally pay a sun tax.
"There was no snag, I backed my claim legally, I am not stupid, I know the law. I did it but anyone else could have done it, it simply occurred to me first."
So what do you think, law folk- is there any weight to her claim?
I don't know about legal precedent, but in terms of economics, it's not acceptable to claim ownership of the sun. It's only okay to "own" something if it's a private good -- that is, if you use it, nobody else can (or it won't be as fun to use if you share it).
For example, a car is a private good because only one person can drive a car at a time. A computer is a private good because only one person can use it at a time. A house is a private good because, if you share it with somebody else, the experience is not quite the same as if you lived by yourself.
The Sun is a public good, because anybody can "use" it, and because, if you use it, it doesn't change the quality of the light and/or heat for somebody else who uses it.
Therefore, like I said, I don't know about the law, but in terms of economic principle, ownership of the sun is unsound and definitely uncool.
