I loved both games, and i'm not sure if there's something wrong with me, but i like KOTOR 2 better than the first one despite it's immeasurable number of glitches and bugs.

I don't know what it was... the darker and more mysterious plot, the overall "darker" feel to the game or the fact that you could make your character look like obi-wan kenobi, were all reasons why i loved the game. First one is great, second one could have been my favourite game of all time if they managed to finish the HK facility and actually had some bug testing happening.
Dude KOTOR 2 had Bugs and glitches coming out in waves and the fact that the game was either half finnished is worse.....But still it was a great game back then and still is....if u could look past all its many flaws

notice: this is a duplicate thread i made by accident. when i posted the original thread there was an issue with my internet and i didnt think it posted, so i made this one...clearly, i was mistaken
original thread is here:
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.235181-why-do-people-like-the-kotor-series-so-much#8349359

why do people like these games?

kotor 1 was the most boring game i have ever played, in every way. combat was BORING, the story was BORING, the characters were BORING, and character development was just pathetic (not as bad as in final fantasy 12 but still pretty bad). combat for me went "flurry,flurry,flurry...done" i didnt even need force powers. the game just felt tedious, especially the star forge.

kotor 2 i actually thought was a good game. combat was more smooth, the story had an element of mystery that actually made me care about what the outcome would be. but it was so buggy it was unplayable. was this game even play tested before release? for games that get so much praise i was expecting so much better.

im sure ill get flamed for this because everyone seems to love these games but please tell me what im missing because other than the star wars license and pretty good voice acting, i cant find anything game of the year worthy...maybe 2003 was just a really slow year
Really? Because I felt the Fable series was the most overrated rpg series...

Fable had mixed reviews though. ALL, and I mean ALL, my friends thought KOTOR was great, where as I couldn't get past the fact that it felt quite dull. Even the dual-wielding started to feel old after a while, but then I'm against a combat system with limited interaction and a simple 'click-and-wait' mechanic, like... 90% of the MMO's out there. ;D

hm, you may have a point. ok the most overrated rpg series that i have played. i never played fable so i can only go off of what i read about it and what i gathered from watching people play it. it seems like it would have been a great game, if its creator had only kept his mouth shut. if i remember correctly he kept going on about how it would be the best game ever made and would change gaming forever or some crap like that.

ok based on those grounds i cant say fable or more or less overrated because ive never played it myself, but ill change my comment to, "kotor is one of the more overrated series"

I probably just feel that way because of Peter Molyneux has his head so far up his ass that the game is just so pretentious of itself it sucks. (In my opinion)

Yeah, I guess you are right, both games are alright. I had some fun with both of them, but I really enjoyed the story of the first one better.

You need to think about things in context when you ask these types of questions. Asking a bunch of random people, then weighting their opinions equally (regardless of their education, hardcore gamer addiction, or in this case, whether they played a lot of the bioware rpgs) will not always give you a fair analysis. Most people nowadays won't be able to tell you why Morrowind is one of the most epic rpgs ever created. Some people wave off a game because it's got bugs...well, then most people would not have championed the games in the Stalker series (games 20-30 hrs in I have had to restart from the beginnning because of patches that fixed critical bugs).

I usually judge a game's fun-ness by the amount of hours I spend playing it. KOTOR was one of those games. But my track record is "played a lot of significant bioware rpgs". I like what they do, and they've provided me with countless hours of entertainment for, at the end of the day, was what cost me a few hours work.

In 2010 we are spoilt for choice for games, even more so rpgs. Fallout 3, The Witcher, NWN2, Bioshock (just to name a few so I don't ramble) are all fantastic, in-depth and beautiful both audibly and visually that have been released in the past couple of years, and in most elements are superior to the KOTOR series.

How many Modern Warfare 2 players played the original COD, do you think? 0.001%? less? How many of them would rate the original as highly as it was when it was released? That is the ultimate context of your question, and it's probably why it received a lot of negative (though honest) response.

Anyway, enjoy the oldskool games for what they are. I certainly wouldn't advise people to play System Shock 2 then tell me how much they liked it, (even though it's a million percent awesome) as it would trigger the same situation :)
true. i dunno, i just thought that posing this question on a gaming forum would get me a variety of responses, and i generally consider this to be one of the mature gaming websites. but it seemed to pretty much just get me the same response from lots of people. i will probably not post anything like this ever again, getting flamed pretty much nonstop for a whole day takes a lot out of you (and ive never been called a troll before, ill be honest with you...it hurts).

i did think kotor was a good length. it wasnt a long rpg, but i certainly wouldnt call it short either. i just didnt enjoy it as much as i expected, which confused me because everyone talked about this game like it could cure cancer.

i think its a shame what happened to the call of duty series. they're still good games but except for the controversy around modern warfare 2, the campaign has really taken a backseat to the multiplayer. i prefer single player games and usually just play online when i have some time to kill and it makes me hesitant to buy a game when the focus is online play. thats not to say they arent fun. i really enjoyed modern warfare's campaign, while it lasted, but i finished it in an afternoon and with the limited number of multiplayer maps, the online mode did not keep me interested for long.

i have system shock 2 but never finished it, i need to do that someday. i never bought bioshock because i heard it was just and updated (and somewhat simplified) version of system shock 2. the witcher 2 i have been absurdly excited about ever since i finished the first game. yahtzee is a fool for not giving that game a fair chance

A lot of people here are just sick of seeing threads that basically say "People like something that I hate, so why does everyone else suck?". There's been a lot of them lately, and your premise for the thread does initially come off as just another one. The Escapist has a reputation for being elitist and threads like those do nothing to help. So that coupled with your low post count (though I do see you've been a member since last year, which actually predates me), people may be prone to see you as a troll who just comes in to say something to get on people's nerves. So a lot of the reactions to your first post in this thread have been less than admirable.

However, one of your posts later is decidedly not troll-like:

ok i think something needs to cleared up. im not saying its a bad game because i didnt like it, obviously popular opinion and reviews suggest otherwise. if my friend tells me that sprite sucks im not gonna be like "fuck you, i love sprite!" i was stating my opinion as a preface to my question of WHY people loved it so much, because if im one of the only people who disliked it, it seems like im probably missing something.
as i said, this is a duplicate thread i made by mistake so the question isnt worded as well because i had to (or rather, thought i had to) rewrite it. i can see how the title of this thread would imply hostility and arrogance, and i can even understand why some people are accusing me of trolling. i encourage you to click the link to my original thread, i think my point may be explained a bit better there but if not, i hope this cleared things up a little. my goal was never to attack you for your opinion and im sorry for coming off that way
People don't often apologize around here, so I want to offer a kudos. This post also demonstrates your point better, and I think the reactions would have been very different if you had taken a tone more like this to begin with. Like I said, if people think you're a troll, they're not going to engage in much constructive conversation with you.

Maybe I just don't see Star Wars as the pinnacle of Sci-Fi because it's just not styled the way I like, or maybe it's just that it's becoming less and less interesting the more 'main streamed and action-tacular' it gets. I don't know. I can appreciate the old-school times, and their Republic-ing, like I can appreciate the Joker beating up on Lord Dark Helmet in a crazy alien universe after we got passed the VERY ODD story-telling in any pre-cursor series.

If nothing else, I thought it'd be fun to play as a Jedi Pilot in their traditional-oriented Pen-n-Paper game, and it'd be just as extensively exciting because the point is that you're telling your own story. And I think Force Unleashed, beyond it's fantastically dumb title, takes a nice perspective and invites a different take on the universe, even though the entirety of it just feels like a fan-fic come to gaming-life.
