You need to think about things in context when you ask these types of questions. Asking a bunch of random people, then weighting their opinions equally (regardless of their education, hardcore gamer addiction, or in this case, whether they played a lot of the bioware rpgs) will not always give you a fair analysis. Most people nowadays won't be able to tell you why Morrowind is one of the most epic rpgs ever created. Some people wave off a game because it's got bugs...well, then most people would not have championed the games in the Stalker series (games 20-30 hrs in I have had to restart from the beginnning because of patches that fixed critical bugs).
I usually judge a game's fun-ness by the amount of hours I spend playing it. KOTOR was one of those games. But my track record is "played a lot of significant bioware rpgs". I like what they do, and they've provided me with countless hours of entertainment for, at the end of the day, was what cost me a few hours work.
In 2010 we are spoilt for choice for games, even more so rpgs. Fallout 3, The Witcher, NWN2, Bioshock (just to name a few so I don't ramble) are all fantastic, in-depth and beautiful both audibly and visually that have been released in the past couple of years, and in most elements are superior to the KOTOR series.
How many Modern Warfare 2 players played the original COD, do you think? 0.001%? less? How many of them would rate the original as highly as it was when it was released? That is the ultimate context of your question, and it's probably why it received a lot of negative (though honest) response.
Anyway, enjoy the oldskool games for what they are. I certainly wouldn't advise people to play System Shock 2 then tell me how much they liked it, (even though it's a million percent awesome) as it would trigger the same situation
