So from what I can gather from Escapist users,

Spore = Bad?

Because I dunno if I bough tit I would just make really obscene looking creatures, with innuendo laden names.
It's not bad, it's just, it didn't lived up to the hype. Then again, getting hyped up for a EA game is like thinking of shooting yourself in the foot will tickle.

I disagree, I think it was actually bad.

Sure there was hype, and certainly I expected a lot from it, but just because it didn't live up to my expectations doesn't mean its not bad.

Look over the game, where is the "fun" part? Outside of the creature creator, the entire thing feels like a grind sandwich. Now, grind isn't a bad thing, as long as I get something for it. What am I getting here? In mmorpgs I have a persistent avatar which improves (and to quote Tyler Durden self improvement is masturbation), what improves is Spore? Outside of unlocking the creature creator parts (which is only phase 2) the only thing I'm creating is my creature. Just give me the creature creator then...

But some games are fun without achieving anything. Like Final Fantasy. Instead we play this game for its rich story telling experience, notably absent in spore.

Ok, what about games that are competitive. Obviously spore doesn't compete with other people, but you are competing against an AI. A very stupid AI, who I managed to beat by complimenting and paying...

If you think that the game is not bad, then what are the fun parts? or is it just the creature creator, because you don't have to buy the game to get that.

I didn't feel any fun nor bad moments. It was kinda of a numb feeling to it.

That doesn't sound like a good thing. A video game shouldn't make you feel numb, we have morphine for that.

I'm not saying you're wrong for enjoying the game, I just don't understand what people enjoyed. I've seen people say it was a fun game, and I'm curious, what part?

Spore sounds like an overly ambitious clone of FLOW. From what I've heard, I'll stick to playing FLOW on the web site for free.

While I do believe EA does always screw things up, I have to say, it's not meant to be epic. ITS A SIM GAME FOR GOD SAKES. Sim games mean:

1. Repetition to try everything possible.
2. A bunch of different things all over the place that you choose what to do with.
3. A reasonable amount of grind considering the genre.
4. Lots of aesthetic customization.

Now I haven't played the game yet, but I never expected it to be something as awesome as Portal or Assassin's Creed. I don't think I'll be disappointing reading this review though, because it's all I would've expected from a Sim game, although I admit ~8 hours sounds short for one stroll through. I guess that's where repetition comes in handy, but still.
Finally someone else who knows what they are talking about! Seriously, it's a sim game. It's not meant to be a super-deep RTS RPG hybrid thing.
While this is true whenever I look at spore I see the best parts of my favorite game genres put into one. Which excites me greatly and happily sends me on my way when I can't decide which game to actually play.

The only part that is like flow is the cell stage, and that lasts about 30 minutes..MAX.

SimLife and SimEarth were both SIM games by Will Wright, the sims aren't the definition of the genre. I don't think it was too much to at least match what he was capable of 16 years ago.

walloftext,severeeyestrain...

Okay, bad jokes aside, think you missed the point. Yes, the RTS bits are kinda meh, and the game is short. But for ambitious as it was, it's still worth picking up and playing for a bit.

Which games would that be? Simon Say's? World of Warcraft clone 27? Civilization 0.5 for Dummies? Escape Velocity Justkiddingwehavenoseriousplotlinethistime? Flow? If I wanted to play these games, I'd play the real thing, not this dumbed down version.

Sorry, that sounded less condescending in my head. Seriously though? Which games? And why do you feel the need to play them in super abbreviated version, instead of just playing the real thing.

Part way through phase 4 (civilization phase) I realized I could have been playing civilization. I actually paused the game, rummaged through my room and found my Alpha Centauri Disc (its civ4 but you design your vehicles, much like spore) and installed it; before finishing off phase 4 just in case phase 5 was any fun. It wasn't.

When a game I play is like another game I've played, generally that's a turn off, not a turn on. Inevitably I'll realize I could be playing that other game and unless the current one has something really compelling, I will.

So I have to assume there was something compelling about spore that you felt the need to play it over those other games you referred to. I'm wondering, what was it?

Spore just died on me.

It got boring.

After annihalating the third species because they don't know the meaning of the word 'surrender', I decided to just blast my way across the galaxy to find the Grox. And well, suffice to say:

They're the very, very obvious 'We need to make the player fight someone' race, and even as I did a mission for them, they were trying their damndest to blast me out of the sky.

But even apart from that, Spore just feels...too bitty. I really don't want to be the sole represenative member of my entire fucking species when it comes to warfare, trade, colonisation, diplomacy, treasure-hunting and nipping down the fucking shops to grab a pint of milk for the bloody next door neighbour who can't do anything for themselves.

Why can't I delegate this sort of shit? Why can't I just ask my colonies to trade spice with each-other?

Why can't I assign spaceships to patrol my planets and keep the eco-system in check?

Why can't I go for 30 seconds without some **** asking me to save them from half a dozen vaguely glowing penis monsters?

Why can't I give colonies to my allies?

Why am I still playing this?

Spore, for all its faults, is a good concept of a game. And for the most part it's fun. But when it feels broken, it fucking decimates any enjoyment previously gained. Maybe if they release a massive update to fix the mountain of issues I have with this game, perhaps I'll play it some more.

But as it stands, no. It feels like they shovelled in a load of ace ideas, but didn't play them all out alongside each-other.

On paper, I'm sure it's wonderful. But in-game, it's one colossal clusterfuck of trying to be in a dozen places at once.

That's it... I think I'm going to have to wait until a few patches or an expansion pack down the road before I finally pick this game up.

I think both tzenes and Surggical_Scar got it right. The game is just mindless repetion and even with the customization aspect, which I really REALLY liked, it all just amounts to a big pile of nothing when you get to Space age (or probably Tribal, depending how you look at it. Sure, it was over-hyped and maybe deep down we're just reacting to that hype, even if we don't realize it.

It's still a bad game, fun on the short term sure, while the "oh look" factor is still kicking in, but not worth the price tag on the long run.

I was expecting this to happen. It kind of makes me sink when sim and sim like games leave most everything you expected it to have and alaborate on. But thier will be a day when it happens and when that happens a monopoly will be created where all other games in its catagory will be thrown into a $5.00 bin in toys are us.

I actually really enjoyed the game. It is exactly what I would expecte from the makers of Sims.
I have only three complaints which were not that big of a deal. One is the building editor seems to hate me and does not always do what I want, granted I make ridiculous buildings.
Two is the fact that you can't edit your character in tribal so the masks dont always work with their eyes or mouths. And thrid, the button that shows you where you stand (i.e aggressive, social, whatever) is also the button that advances your stage. This is annoying seeing as sometimes you would like to see where you stand before you advance, but if you already filled up the bar, you can't.
Like I said, these are small problems (though that last one really bothers me) but I still enjoyed the game.

What did you like about it? I've seen a couple people say they liked it, but I've never seen anyone explain what they liked or why they liked it.
