If you were to ask me to write a list of things i never thought Square Enix would do a third Drakengard game would have been right up the top of the list, followed closely by them actually releasing Final Fantasy Versus 13. So, you can imagine my surprise when i heard that a new Drakengard game was not only going to be released...but that most of the gaming press seemed to not even be remotely aware of this happening.

Given that 99.99% of people here likely havn't the slightest clue what this Drakengard thing is, allow me to go ahead and give a brief run-down. Released in 2003 Drakengard was basically a combination of Panzer Dragoon and Dynasty warriors, selling itself on it's ability to switch between Dragon and foot as well as the ability to fight through armies. The gameplay was..ultimately rather sub-par and, while workable, just wasn't interesting. Story-wise, the narrative attempted to be Spec ops: The line for J-RPG's, although wasn't able to reach the same level of quality. It followed the story of Union General Caim, a bloodthirsty and quite frankly bonkers man who would make even Kratos flinch, as he attempted to take down the empire that's invading his land with the aid of a Dragon that he just joined souls with. The other characters are not much better then the main man himself, making one wander if a hero could even exist in a world like this let alone if one is even around.
The game has since gone on to become something of a cult classic, remembered mostly for it's bleak and unforgiving storyline, twisted characters, and for making giant floating babies with teeth haunt our nightmares. It also HATED children with the fury of a thousand suns.

A sequel was released in 2005, drastically improving upon the gameplay for both dragon and ground. But, unfortunately, the dark and bleak hopelessness of the original were all but lost in the transition, leaving a bare-bones sequel with a mostly forgettable if rather stupid story. It also made the mistake of replacing the interesting and refreshing, if psychotic, Caim with Nowe..a character so by the numbers that his only defining trait is his stupidity.

Nier was also released as a parallel universe following on from the worst ending (Which makes the Mass Effect 3 ending seem sensible by comparison) and fared far better then it's predecessor, keeping the same feel of Drakengard one but choosing to refine the story to be quite a heartfelt experience.

So now Drakengard 3 is at our feet, what does everyone else think about this?

On the plus side at-least Zero seems to be more interesting then Nowe, even if she does look a bit silly.

Holy shit! Never thought I'd see the day. Never played the original game but there's some pretty good Let's Plays. That game had some absolutely bonkers shit going on. Hope this isn't a PS3 exclusive.

I found the original to be a fascinating, but ultimately shit, game. Though thee atmosphere was wonderfully bleak and it may well have the darkest story I've ever encountered in a game. That isn't necessarily a good thing, though. It could be really difficult to give a shit about the characters sometimes because they were, by and large, massive assholes.

Nier was a far superior game to both Drakengards. It wasn't without some big problems itself (desperately needed a lock-on feature for the combat and some of the dialogue was really awkwardly written) but was an extremely under-rated gem, I thought.

The description in the link seems a tad silly, but I'm willing to give the game a chance. I automatically find myself cringing a little bit whenever a character is called "Zero," though. I guess it might have a point here, considering her sister's name.

Although I've never played Neir, I still own my PS2 copies of Drakengard 1&2... God I loved the first game... It was just so frigging dark, like Arioch, your elf cannibal companion, or Leonard, who apparently was supposed to be a Pedophile... I'm super excited about this new game coming out, but I really hope they take the risk to make it more like the first game.

Does anyone remember how long they spent getting all the bonus weapons? Or unlocking all 5 endings? I actually really enjoyed playing the little rhythm game in the 5th ending... but man was the story ever messed up. Even reading an in-depth synopsis I found it hard to follow.

OT: is Neir worth picking up? And what platform is it for?

I just read the above comment. I didn't know it had characters like that. It kind of changed my opinion about it now, and not in a good way.

The first Drakengard was fucking terrible. It hurt my dragon-loving soul...Deep hurting.
I literally curled up into the fetal position upon reading that.

At least it's PS3-only, so there's no chance of that kind of pain reaching me again.

Nier is the best of the games, imo. It's on the 360 and PS3. Sadly and predictably, there was no PC release :[

Count me as interested. It is SE, but if they could take the scope evolving weapons from the first, add a bit of the production value from the second(and nothing else), and throw in a few more RPG-ish elements I'd possibly buy it.

Give me tons of weapons, plenty of enemies to use them on, a dragon for occasionally changing things up, STAY THE FUCK AWAY FROM CLOSED CORRIDOR LEVELS, and I'll be happy. Tis the most I could hope for.

The pain may never reach you again, but the darkness of that game never leaves you..It consumes you.

Search your feelings, you know what i say is true dragon lover...

Yes, Nier is worth picking up.

It basically managed to salvage the worst ending in the game, and produce something beautiful with it (The one where Caim and Angelus are shot down by jets). It is available for PS3 and Xbox 360

Drakengard was my shit! I loved the first one. Second one was pretty cool, but I wound up not really playing it.

I really hope they don't screw the pooch on it. Also, I had no clue Nier we related to Drakengard. That alone is making me consider picking it up (never tried it before).

Oh God yes.
yesyesyesyesyes

I absolutely LOVED Drakengard 1 & 2, they were some of my favorite PS2 games as a kid. The batshit story, the Dynasty Warriors-esque gameplay (which I've always enjoyed), and the sheer quantities of weapons to collect and ruin days with made one of the best games I played growing up.

On a side note, I've still been meaning to play Nier eventually, on account of its story relevance.

Get Nier.
Just... do it.

OT: Cool, I fucking loved Nier (if that wasn't obvious enough) so I wonder if I'll notice any sort of connection.

EDIT: That lady looks a loooooot like Kaine. Just sayin'.

I've stopped trying to predict what Square is going to do.

As for Drakengard 3, sounds cool. I never got to play 1 and 2 despite my enthusiasm for dragons, I never had much hope for dragon games, quite a few of them are just... bad.

Yes!

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES!

I never even imagined the possibility of a new Drakengard game so this is fantastic news! I can only hope that it'll be as soul crushingly depressing as the previous two. Sure the second one was AS bleak, but it has its moments.

Damn, can't get to use the FUTURE REFUSED TO CHANGE picture, but I'll take it. Now make KH3!

Edit: I guess DK2 was cool, I just hated the silly love story between Nowe and whatsherface mage.

Okay, I honestly have to wonder why SE thought it would be a good idea to release these screenshots [http://gematsu.com/2013/03/drakengard-3-high-res-screenshots-artwork].
What the hell is this? What is it? Where are everyone's feet? What is going on here?

If I ever pick up a PS3 or 360 when their prices drop drastically after the next gen is in full swing, Nier will be one of the first games I buy. For one reason and one reason only. Nier has one of the most depressingly beautiful stories I've ever had the pleasure of reading a synopsis for. It could have shit gameplay and I'd still play it solely for the story. And then there's Ending D. My god, the feels, they hurt. D:
