I've played the game, and it doesn't feel stiff and unnatural at all.

OT: This game will get 500,000 subscribers pretty easily.
It is Star Wars, after all.
Is the combat as smooth as KoTOR's combat at least?

If this is the case, this game will be a hit. No questions asked.
I only played a little bit of it, but it seemed to be fine.
Granted, not as smooth as WoW's current combat, but it is still good enough, in my opinion. Yes, I'd say it is as good as KotOR's.

"Profitable with 500,000 Subs". There are three ways this phrase can be used plausibly:

1) MMORPGs. As given in article.
2) Subway franchises.
3) My kind of whorehouse!

This has a lot more going for it.
like what? being for star wars fans?
The Star Wars fan community is still pretty big, and I don't think it's stretching things to say that a very large percentage of them are gamers.

This also has the draw of being a sci-fi MMO in a sea of lookalike sword-n-sorcery games. How many sci-fi MMOs are there - three? Four? And how many with decent production values? One? I would have greatly preferred to see Bioware put out a Mass Effect MMO rather than Star Wars, but I'm still going to play this because I want to play sci-fi, not fantasy, and I'm tired of Eve Online's click-to-move interface.

I think the WoW fanboys are swarming because something looks moderately threatening to them. I don't think ToR will be a WoW killer, hell I hope it isn't, I do think it is one of the best MMOs to come along in years and should be able to make a million subscribers pretty easily.

Wow, a couple of people on this thread really want to hate this game. Ya know, despite never playing it and only seeing a few minutes of closed beta footage they're already, somehow, passed judgment.

For the record, the exact same argument can be used about nearly every opinion, good or bad, about any upcoming game or movie or any other form of entertainment.

looks generic right?
Not really. Low level, cover based ranged combat against multiple enemies? That doesn't happen in too many mmos.

What does it have? STORY!

I know it's tired by now, with Bioware hyping it constantly, but the story in SW:TOR is on par with KOTOR.

Also, the idea that people play one MMO, and nothing else, is pretty damn outdated. I have at least 2 pay to play subs and 2-3 f2p subs at any given time. Most of the gamers I know do as well - Star Wars fandom is generally a bit older, in the group of people who don't stress over paying $45 a month for a few games.
THAT's what I'm looking forward to. Story. This looks like an mmo where you can have just as much fun playing by yourself as you do with other people. And since most mmos bank on the social aspect alone to bring you in, that's leaps and bounds ahead of the competition.

I never subscribe to more than one mmo a month though. I jump between DC online (best game play), City of Heroes (best team mechanics), and Star Trek online (best pvp)

500,000 at launch is easy.

Unless TOR is going to be a godsend to the MMO market (hint: it won't), it will not have that many subs after a few years.
Yea, warhammer have 700,000 first month, and 300,000 later that year when WotLK launched.

Im thinking the same will happen because from the preview the gaemplay is not mind blowing but the story is it's strength the problem is story is a one time thing, and no way can the developer keep out with how fast player plays the game.

Sure you can't control how fast someone goes through the game, but I think using story is actually pretty ingenious on Bioware's part. There are instances that have separate story arcs that require a party. This is a great way to nudge people who usually play alone into the social aspects of the MMO, which is how they're going to sustain the playerbase. That's usually how I play MMOs, but I'm fairly confident that I'll end up joining parties for these, and who knows, one of those parties might lead to me joining a guild.

There's naysayers all over the internet, no matter the topic. Doesn't matter if it's the best game in the universe, some people will complain and say it's trash and will never sell.

Gonna play the crap out of SWTOR regardless of what anyone says about it.

500,000 subscribers at roughly $14.99 per month (my guess) over 10 years equals $900,000,000 in revenue. Throw in some expansion packs, droid pets, and Landspeeder mounts purchasable with real cash similar to what Blizzard World of Warcraft [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/100024-25-World-of-Warcraft-Mount-Launches-on-Blizzard-Store], and you've got yourself a few hundred million more bucks to put in the corporate till.
But what about George Lucas's cut?

WoW was Blizzards own IP whereas Star Wars doesn't belong to EA...and I doubt any of Lucas's executives would let EA get away with paying a "one time fee"...they likely have a deal in place to get a taste of the profits annually...

jesus there are some people who are just itching for this game fail, partially because they just love being the "I TOLD YOU SO" type, and partially because they think they heard inside info about the costs/combat/that disgruntled employee, and want to feel cool and say its going to fail.

OT: this will be the first mmo subscription that i will actually commit to

bioware, im in your hands, do not fuck me over. if its anything like kotor, especially combat wise, we will stay very very good friends.

I'm looking forward to this quite a bit. Shame I never got to participate in the beta even though I signed up fairly early.

You're forgetting one very important thing about this game: Star Wars.

It doesn't matter how bad a game is if it has multiplayer and lightsabers.
