I've been reading through the comments within the thread and can't help but be angered by people saying that GTAIV was boring. Seems like The Escapist doesn't like innovation or change...Or a game that shows the sheer power of videogames.
Narratively, graphically and thematically incredible, GTAIV is a masterpiece, and I cannot comprehend how people hate it. "It's not like San Andreas" is not an argument. Judge it on it's own merits.

To say that GTAIV had was too serious is to completely miss the satire of the whole game. There are unlimited moments of hilarity within the game but the humour is more subtle and I find that funnier than the in-your-face laughfest of San Andreas.

I know it's all subjective...people's opinions etc...but I still cannot understand how people can ostracise a game as progressive as GTAIV.

OT: I'm not particularly excited by the announcement of a trailer, but I will definitely be buying GTAV.

God, oh GOD let it be more like San Andreas and less like the gritty angst-fest that was GTA IV.

Seriously, GTA IV was just boring. San Andreas is still one of the best gaming experiences ever in my opinion.

I'm kind of failing to see how exactly GTA IV was in any way innovative. Now, before you say anything, I mean innovating in the way that it did something entirely new. What GTA IV was, was an extremely (and, I can't stress this enough: EXTREMELY) well made, story-focused sandbox.

I loved the cut-scenes. They were funny, well-paced and astonishingly written. I also enjoyed majority of the side-characters (Little Jacob, anyone?) and the many, many choices you had to make regarding those side-characters throughout the game.

See, my problem with GTA IV is... hard to explain. While the characters were well-written, I just didn't feel connected to any of them. Hell, I actually DISLIKED Niko.

The missions. They were mostly very plain and unimaginative.

The flying. Good GOD, was it fucked up badly on PC. Why did they have to change the simple (and most of all, WORKING) controls from San Andreas? Also, why didn't they include planes? Or a jetpack? There's no one out there who can say the jetpack wasn't barrels of fun in SA.

Why did they add flying out through the windshield when crashing at high speeds? Who the hell felt the need for that kind of annoying realism? Or why did you have to lose HP when exiting the car while driving? I used that feature in San Andreas a lot because... well, because it was PRACTICAL and FUN.

Seriously, the list goes on and on.

So yeah, it's mostly the little things. My preferences regarding characters are just me being a dick, I guess, but the little, annoying, "realistic" features killed the fun for me.

And that's why GTA IV was boring.

Sorry Rockstar.

Saints Row the Third has enchanted me with its amazing lack of seriousness.

That game is going to be hilariously good fun.

Even though I didn't like GTA IV nearly as much as I liked GTA 3 era games, this announcement made me so excited that I literally had an erection. I am a huge GTA fan. I was honestly never this excited about an announcement. I have high hopes for GTA 5. I'd like to see it set in late 70's.

Typos aside...what do you mean? Literally everything? Graphically? Technically? what?

Again, it's all subjective...you hold that as your opinion. But I genuinely cannot comprehend how.

Yay a new Gta! :D Screw the haters, can't wait!

And btw, throw that Saints Row crap out of the window, if I'd pick it up, I'd laugh at it not with it.

fixed it.

And yes, maffia 2 on my pc on full steam (with this I refer to steam engines as maxing out the graphics)
Looked more crisp than gta IV

It's the same graphics style but highly perfected,
It's somewhere inbetween gta IV and the GTA IV Frostbite mod or whatever it's called

What the fuck is up with you guys? Have you all caught the cynicism virus from Yahtzee?

ITS A NEW FUCKING GTA GAME! I don't really care in what direction they go with it. I prefer the humourous and crazy Vice/SA style but i'm not gonna front, GTA IV had some really touching moments and overall Rockstar pulled off a very weighty story without being heavy-handed.
There is no need for GTA when SR3 is almost out

Should be good as long as they fix the controls, the cover system, the shooting, the physics engine, the pacing, the disconnect between the story and game ("I need moar money," says Niko, with $500k in the bank) and make proper use of characters.
Dont forget the A.I that was bloody horrible. I learnt my lesson when I foolishly bought GTA3 and was bored senseless, after that I just borrowed a friends copy of Vice City and GTAIV and was not particularly impressed. It just failed to grip me on any level beyond the short see how many people you can kill before the cops arrest/shoot you phase after that it just gets put down and I never touch it again oh actually not completely true the radio stations could be mildly entertaining for a while.

So yeah I will follow it but I am not hopeful it will appeal to me or fulfill its purpose in entertainment (i.e to entertain on some level), what will be interesting will be if it ends up going head to head with a current marketing giant such as halo or cod game that could start a massive flame war as companies fight over customers with two very different games.

Can I just say, I loved the whole relationship thing with niko. It made him feel more as a character in the game, not some nut job psycho.

Why the fuck is everyone comparing GTA and Saints Row? They are really different from each other, I would understand if it was GTA VC vs Saints Row but this new GTA will probably follow the style of GTAIV and that is not a bad thing, Saints Row is great at what it is, an over the top fun game and GTA is good at what it is, a gritty crime story. Just get them both since they dont offer the same kind of experience.

No on all accounts.
The game suffered from a massive disconnect between story and gameplay. Why the hell is Niko obsessing about money when the player got him millions by robbing people? Why is he expressing remorse of his actions as a soldier when the player just forced him to go on a killing spree. For that matter, why would a character like Niko, who by the inevitable actions of the player is a sadistic, sociopathic mass murder, be able to maintain any sort of social life?

The theme is not exactly unique. It's a tale of redemption and tragedy, which I'm pretty sure has been a literary staple for the past two thousand-something years. It doesn't help that Niko has no redeeming qualities (sans perhaps for his accent), or for that matter any clear motivation for leaving the whole damn situation behind. Again, this is the disconnect between story and gameplay. The story would be fine as a run-of-the-mill gangster flick, but the player freedom disrupts this massively.

Graphics, no. Just no. Did you play the xbox version and have run stuff just pop into existence a few pixels in front of you? Lag? Texture loading problems? It may be better on the PC (especially with that photorealism mod, although I should stress that mods do not invalidate any criticism of the game), but I have no first hand experience of that. Aside from the aforementioned issues, it was just ugly, grey, and brown. If you now want to assert that Ballad was better in that regard, kindly tell me how that fixes the MAIN game?

GTA4 was not a masterpiece by any means. It most certainly wasn't a game that could showcase "the sheer power of videogames." It was decent, and much of the ire it received was from fans of the series (yours truly included), who did not like the new direction, or some particular element of the game. This is not a point against innovation, but one for the continuation of the series. Members of a series have to, by definition, be related to each other in some way, be it theme, gameplay, story, or recurring characters. The possible range of innovation is thus quite limited in a continuing series, which is why your assertion that criticism of GTA is automatically a criticism of innovation is just plain wrong.

I'm excited; I loved GTA IV and Red Dead: Redemption; it's been far too long since the last Rockstar game came out. I'm in the apparent minority that enjoy both the over-the-top, incredibly ridiculous style of open world game (Saints Row, Just Cause 2) AND Rockstar's more realistic, story-driven approach.

Seriously, it's not a case of one or the other. We can have both realistic and ridiculous open world games; hell, split them into two separate genres if you like. SeriousOpenWorldGame (SOWG) and RidiculousOpenWorldGame (ROWG).

Because it catered to a different audience then previous games i.e. it was all aobut realism whereas the previous ones where about dicking around, alot of old fans where angered by this sudden change of direction that came out of leftfield whilst new ones came in.
It doesnt matter if a game is "progressive" it matters that it is fun, alot of people (myself included) did not find it fun.
Saying you get "angered" by people disagreeing with you just makes you sound like a childish fool.

I'll hold off on my excitement until we get more info. Apparently I'm in agreement with most of the thread, in that the last GTA game just bored the shit outta me.
