It'd be pretty easy to stop Hitler's rise to power, we should've treated Germany much better in the Treaty of Versailles, and let them join the League of Nations straight off.

But if I could stop him being born......
Well I personally would jump at the chance of going back to 1907, because I think the absence of modern technology would make me a happier man, and stopping Hitler would be a bonus.
Good answer... I'm seeing my decision and reasoning follow yours almost exactly.

If I could go back in time, I'd have a chat with him. After I prove to him I'm from the future (how to do that is TBD) I'd say to him:

"Herr Hitler... If you continue your present course you will become directly responsible for throwing the world into another war that kills millions of people and brings about the downfall of Germany. You - personally - will become the symbol of the Ultimate Evil? for centuries to come. You and the woman you love will end up in a ditch, covered in petrol, on fire [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pAOLOGGftTY] in the bombed out ruins of your capital city Berlin as invaders move in and eventually butcher up Germany for decades to come.

However...

By doing this, you will also show the world just how evil man can be and you will thereby indirectly make mankind swear to never do this again. If you don't do this, someone may come after you and act even more attrociously, possibly bringing about the end of the world in a nuclear war.

Your choice... have a good life."

I don't think I would. It would be nice to go back in time and stop everything bad from happening in the world, but evil must exist for good to mean anything, like light and dark or life and death. I don't think its up to us to meddle with such things.

What if you could go back in time to 1907 when Adolf Hitler was only 18 years of age and stop him from rising to power in Germany? The catch is that you can't come back to 2008, you must stay in the 1907 timeline for the rest of your life... Would you do it?

To be perfectly honest, personally I'm not sure if I would. Not only for fear of disrupting the future but because I simply would not wish to spend the rest of my life in the early 1900's.
If you would go back and change history you might have never been born and therefore it would be impossible for you to change history...?...!

I believe there are rules against stopping Hitler in place [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ptitlekz83hawz?from=Main.HitlersTimeTravelExemptionAct]

Probably not. He did terrible things back then, but making him disappear would radically alter the world..... and I'm rather fond of the world as it is now (global recession and all).

I'm a "glass half full" kind of guy.

Sorry about the double post, but the quote at the top of that link is GENIUS.

... aaaaaand in all probability that wouldn't have changed much. Nationalism was a very popular ideology at the time, and fascism and nazism both rose in response to communism. High membership of the NSDAP and the massive popular support Hitler had in Germany and Austria (and quite a few supporters in other countries, too) shows that the nazi ideology would still very probably appear. And even if it was not based on the expansive idea of Lebensraum, there's still the USSR, which - if I may remind you - started the war together with Germany. In fact, even if you managed to completely prevent the rise of fascist political forces in Germany, there was still Stalin, a man even more cruel and ruthless than Hitler, who still bitterly remembered the Red Army having had their asses handed to them in 1920 largely in result of his mistake, so it'd probably result in a big duke-out between the USSR and the rest of Europe...

Nice text wall there, but in short: if you wanted to prevent WW2, you'd probably have to go back at least to around 1905, and deal not with Hitler, but with the rising communists in Russia. That, at the very least.

That's what I was thinking. Then I can't waste my life on internets!

I'd try to warn Hitler of the path he's taking and that it'll cause untold suffering and ultimately bring about his end.

And if doesn't listen to me, I'll blow his brains out

The War Guilt Clause wasn't the nicest thing either.

Though to understand the rise of Hitler you must understand the state of Germany in the previous reich's leading up to WWI, then then state of mind during Weimar. With these backgrounds set, it is difficult to see how Hitler couldn't of come to power.

Go read "Nazi Seizure of Power," "Mein Kamp" and, "Hitler's Second Book." It will give you a better picture of Hitler's mind. Then read "Ordinary Men." It takes another look at how manipulation in the Third Reich took hold.

Anywho, on topic. No, I wouldn't stop Hitler.

Now, I am not a racist, I am not an anti-semite. I believe the atrocities that Hitler commited were horrible.

Though, without WWII, where would our technology be? Would we have Penicillin? What other technologies wouldn't have been invented. Would jet engines not have been utilized in mass quantities after the war.

Also, what about the Cold War. It wouldn't have started, would it? Think about all the technological advances we found during those years.

In other words. I wouldn't stop Hitler commiting Genocide on the Jews during WWII, because I believe we have saved tenfold the number that died in WWII by the technologies we developed during that time of war and the years thereafter.

I suppose it would be a debate, there are positives and negatives. Without WW2 we most likely wouldn't have all these great regulations on nuclear weapons, and somebody would end up firing them all at once. Then again, I could make a FORTUNE inventing technology before it would be in the normal timeline, as well as advancing the ability of clean energy. I really wouldn't be able to decide.

I'd just go back meet hitler and become his mate. since he had a cute mustache and all. but seriously guys whats all the fuzz about hitler being soo evil both mao and stalin killed off more people than hitler did but ive never seen or heard anybody whine about them.

but to answer the question seriously i wouldnt go back to stop him. quite simply coz ive always had alot of fun studying WW2 and i wouldnt wanna miss out on that.
Stalin killed his people because he knew what was coming, have you heard the people in documentaries? "it was amazing, the russians fought with anything they had guns, clubs bricks, i couldnt belive it, they simply refused to give up their motherland", That is because stalin toughend up his people, if stalin would have done nothing, he would have lost his country to the nazi's and we would be speaking German right now.
