Do as the soviets used to do it. Nuke it. I'm serious, and it actually worked in most cases. I should think it'd be fairly cheap aswell, compared to the other 'solutions'. Then again, Obama would probably decrease in popularity, damn no good democracy!

This problem isn't going to be solved untill the oil company who owned the site decides there's no way to salvage it and use it. While they still think they can build another rig on top of it they will not fix it. simple as.

I can't think of a reasonable response to this so-take the time watch from LRR and go back in time to stop it ever happening. However because it's from LRR it will probably go wrong and make it worse than ever. Probably not a good idea actually.

All the ideas I've seen floating around seem like yes, they'd probably work--if the pipeline wasn't 5000 feet underwater, and if you didn't have to do the operation with robots in the dark. Just because it works in your kitchen doesn't mean it'll work in a place where humans can't go, against thousands of gallons of oil gushing out under pressure.

Nuke it.

Duct tape of course. If duct tape doesn't work, then we've got a major issue.
Of course! Why didn't I think of that?!

Whatever you come up with, get Jon Stewart to shred the idea. [http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/thu-may-13-2010/there-will-be-blame]

Since oil floats on water, you can light it on fire, and depending on the speed that the oil travels with, it might be burned up by the time it reaches the shores. :)

Edit: I have no actual proof for this, lol

I agree with the money idea, but in the way we make some sought of filter made of money. The substance could be named papier-cashe...

Insert an industrial balloon into the hole, inflate balloon. Cheaper faster and more likely to work than cement and mud.

As for the stuff in the oceans, it's oil. Believe it or not it's a naturally occurring substance and this sort of thing does happen from time to time. Try not to go swimming in that part of the country for a few years and avoid fish.

I think they should pile all kinds of stone (not sure what would be best for this) around the pipe and detonate some explosive that would super heat the stone and cause them to fuse together around the leak and halt the flow.

Well filling the hole with tires and golf balls amazingly didn't work so maybe we should call Captain Planet?

On a serious note I understand what happened but not enough to reccomend a solution but from my understanding there are nets that can be set up to stop oil from spreading so why not set some of those up around the leak immediatly to stop it from spreading too far.

uuh.. I think they have already clogged it u and now they are waiting for the pressure to decrease (how?) to seal it up completely.
The balloon idea is quite retarded, given the massive pressure of the leak.
