Story over gameplay, what was the last game that you were addicted to because of its story/writing?

First it was Final Fantasy 4 and 6, then I moved onto Dark Cloud 1 and 2. All had great stories.

Mass Effect was brilliant for that of course.

Fallout3 was one for me though, although most people I speak to say its like the one of the worst story ever written.. Ill admit I didnt play the first 2 games but for the majority of the game I was hooked, if it had been any other game I wouldnt have kept playing it. The shooting mechanics were pretty clunky feeling and RPG elements were quite good.

The story gave me enough interest to play through the game. If the story/universe was as dull as people make out I wouldnt have played the game more than 5 minutes.

Mass Effect, Not many games have a story even near as good, its made even better by the best converation sequences in any game.

Bioshock without question. Until I played that game I'd almost forgotten that a FPS could have a gripping storyline...

Hmm call me shallow, but I am more of a gameplay over story kind-off person. If the gameplay is good, I enjoy playing the game and usually don't get too excited about the story.

I liked Mass Effect, the story was fine but the gameplay was excellent. The same for KoTOR, pretty good story and superb gameplay. I guess I'm just too impatient to go through all the conversations in a patient matter, rather then reading every line meticulously.

Every game in the half-life series, I still replay the game for the story, ( so much that I have every bit of dialog pretty much memorized ...)

Mass Effect. The gameplay was brilliant too, but the story, dialogues and the characters were just...wow.

FF8, FF10 (Both just for Story and pretty Cutscenes, but given the horrible storytwist halfway around 8 and the fact that i still hated the battle system of FF10, i wont be playing any more Final Fantasies...)

The Path, of course (although i am ashamed to admit that i don't think i really get it)

Shadow of the Colossus...wait, that was a lie, but when i'll play it again it will be for the story

Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle, Full Throttle, Sam & Max (new and old ones) (once again shameful i have to admit that i "played" the MIs entirely by using a walkthrough because i did not actually care about the gameplay at all)

Planescape: Torment (Still playing it, don't spoil!)

And Mass Effect, the Combat was okay really, but in the end it's all about the Story and the way you can choose your own kind of badass-ness per multiple choice dialogue...

Call of Juarez. Although I liked playing as the Reverend, the rest of the game turned me off.

and enjoyed it? :cringes: i did.
Hah, I thought I was the only person to play that game.

I didn't enjoy it, persay, more like I was compelled to see exactly what was supposed to be going on.

As for games I liked for story, Baldur's Gate 2 was one. While the game itself was fun it felt abit of a drag but the storyline kept me intrigued.

Planescape was mentioned. I must mention Baldur's Gate 1 & 2. But then, the gameplay was great in those games, just a bit primitive for todays standards.

Lost Odyssey, Mass Effect and Persona 3 FES/4 kept me pretty interested because of the story. That doesn't mean the gamplay was that bad.

The Half-Life series. The story and characters are just phenomenal, and just the desire to see where the story went next was what made me push through the hard and irritating parts of the games.
I can't summarise it better than this, really.
