I don't see why people care so much about a dude wearing a dress. As long as it covers up everything the dress code says it should, I don't see the big deal.

The biggest complaint I've seen so far is "Eeeww! Guys in dresses are so gross!" and that's a weak one as far as I'm concerned.

I actually agree with the school on this one. The kid didn't dress up because he's transvestite or anything, he did it just for the laughs and that's the risk you take. He was a distraction to other kids trying to learn that day and the school dealt with him accordingly. Three days off seems appropriate, and maybe the kid's mother should think twice before she encourages that kind of behavior.

Hunh, and at my school if you cross dressed you just got five of the biggest and most bull headedly conservative dicks to pay you a visit you and do anything from beat the living hell out of you to leave you dying with a few new knife wounds to show off if you lived.

Still this is rather dumb. Originally I thought this was going to be about a dress code violation where the girl was wearing some slutty mini skirt thing that didnt even cover her ass and had rips all through it. Now I'm just not really surprised. Its nice to see the school doesnt want to comment i.e. tehy had no real reason and just dont want to look stupid(-er) though if they want to do this, they should say any girl wearing pants should be suspended, and just wait to see how long it takes a protest to come up for that.

... its actually kinda really sad that this is what we need to show a double standard in today's America (and even the world, cause I dont think those people from other countries other then America and look down on this kinda instance and the American people would be so quick tot alk if it happened in their country. Oh well, like I said, could have been worse for the kid.

My school had 'opposite day' as part of spirit week that included a prize for the best outfit at the pep rally on Friday. One of my friends won it senior year with a revealing China dress.

Putting aside my generally anti-school viewpoint that public schools shouldn't be compulsory or have the right to suspend others rights, this whole thing is ridiculous. He wasn't even breaking any of the established rules. The school probably just made a big deal about it because what he was doing was different and caused commotion and excitement. Schools, or institutions in general, don't really like that kind of thing.

I say we fight for this kid's right to wear stupid clothing. Sure, that kind of stuff might not mesh well with the school environment, but progress never meshes well with the current norm.

I don't even care if it doesn't cover things up. Why should we care? Because naked people are gross? Because there is something inherently immoral about it? People used to think, and still do, think that crossdressing is immoral or sick. But now we're moving out that.

I understand where you are coming from, just letting people go around nude or in very revealing clothing would be a ridiculous step that people wouldn't be able to handle.

PORT ORCHARD, Wash. ? A 15-year-old boy has been suspended from school after wearing high heels and a dress to school as a part of a challenge laid down by his mother.

Sam Saurs, a ninth grader at Sedgwick Junior High School in Port Orchard, said he told his mother that wearing high heels wouldn't be that hard. Saurs' mother challenged him to try it and he accepted. To take it even further, he decided to wear a dress, too.

"I was pretty," said Saurs.

After Saurs showed up at school Wednesday in the dress and heels, the school suspended him for the remainder of the year. That suspension was later reduced to three days. But, Saurs won't be allowed to go to the ninth grade dance or the class party at Wild Waves.

Saurs said he was disappointed it got him kicked out of school.

"If anything, it makes me want to be more out there and more spontaneous and crazy," he said.

Saurs has been suspended before for wearing makeup and hats to class.

His mother, Ivanna Leible, said she did not complain about the suspension since the school does have a ban on hats, but she said there is no rule against boys wearing dresses in the student handbook.

"I found that very offensive. They told him he couldn't be him," said Leible.

The South Kitsap School District said the issue has been resolved and would not make any further comment about the incident.
To clarify, this is a public school (meaning taxpayer funded). I think it's ridiculous to deny someone education via suspension simply for being nonconforming. The biggest problem is that this wasn't written anywhere. Are they trying to teach students that written rules don't matter?

Shouldn't the law which struck down "dresses only for girls" dress codes also have stricken "pants only for boys"?
Title (a) Prohibition against discrimination; exceptions. No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance
Or do boys just have less of a right to wear dresses than girls do to wear pants?
Googling the school and the words dress code I got this:

http://www.skitsap.wednet.edu/1467207317382693/site/default.asp

In it it says that any article of clothing shoes included that are deemed unsafe are against the school dress code that means that the heels are against the dress code. And since he has already been suspended for going against the dress code as was stated in the story he was suspended again for breaking the dress code.

*EDIT*

They didn't suspend him for wearing the dress. They suspended him for breaking the dress code which through this story is constrewed as wearing the dress when it was his entire outfit where the heels seem to be left out.

Everyone should wear what they want. If it breaks school rules (like the hat thing) then fine, but if the dress doesn't break school rules then he should be aloud to wear it if he wants.
Mmmhmm. So this is the school essentially saying "You can't be different."

Ah, the US. Land of the free indeed. This is fucking disgraceful that people still exclude other people simply for doing something different. And just to put this on a flat line for the school, you think that it being a dare from someone else it would have been all fine, considering he wasn't doing it to simply wear feminine clothing.

Ugh, I hate this world at the moment.

Edit: And just because of the nine years of being on the net, I finally got first post!
I think that there was a good chance that he did do it to wear feminine clothing, I don't really believe that there was a bet. Not that I have a problem with what he did, if wearing a dress makes him happy I think he should be allowed to, he's not harming anyone it's just the bit that says he's been suspended before for wearing make-up that makes me doubt the bet part I believe that he's most probably transgendered, or just young and experimenting.

Well if the kid is allowed to wear stuff like that then whats the point of having dress code at all? Not sure how dress codes work in the states but where I live you wear the school uniform and thats it, dont have it then you had better have a good excuse and make sure you get whatever your missing quick.

If they let him do that then anyone can pretty much wear whatever they want. But still why the fuck would he even want to wear a dress and high heels?

What the hell!? Who do they think they are? Catholics!?

I don't think this kid's a crossdresser, but what if he is? What if he's transgender? He can't express that? It's against school regulations to be different? This is Washington, not the deep south! I want the ACLU to get involved in this. I want them to force the school administration to issue an official apology, and pay this kid for pain and suffering.

The only thing I like about this story is that the kid doesn't feel dejected, and it doesn't seem like it will get him to stop. Go on! Fight the power!!!

Well it is sexist, in a way, or homophobic at least. Even if the kid's not gay, that might be the interpretation of some.

Maybe it's because I'm not gay or a crossdresser, but I can't see why someone would want to subject themselves to possible embarrassment, ridicule, and scorn for something like that. There are some battles worth fighting, but fashion doesn't seem like one of them. I realize there's a gender-identification thing wrapped up in all this, but I don't think kids are going to stop and consider that before they bully him into oblivion. That's a whole other issue in itself though, and one that I imagine will change with time. Hell if I know how to ease the transition.

In this part of the world, uniforms are rare, and from what I've heard, non-existent in public schools. You only need a uniform if you're in the military or something.

Now, as for why he would want to wear a dress and high heels...because he's a cross dresser. You got a problem with that!?
