I KNEW IT WAS REAL! For years my fellow colleagues denied it's existence... But I knew it was true! MUAHAHAHAHA.

It doesn't say how old the students were, maybe they were 5 years old or something.
Considering that the article said they were more likely to type in "Georgewashington.com" than they were to do a search on George Washington, I'd say this is quite likely. This daily mail article is setting off my BS monitors, the way the octopus website supposedly didn't for these students. Also, can we get a verification that the octopus website even exists? I've clicked on the link twice, and received a "Problem loading page" error both times.

They did something similar to this years ago. The urban myth that the average person swallows 8 spiders a year was started on the internet to see how many idiots would believe it. Considering most people now think it's a fact, I'd say the results of this tree octopus study are entirely believable.

If there's a hoax, someone will fall for it.
It's just the way things goes.

I visited it and it's real. But yeah, since the article doesn't say how old they were there is really no conclusions about students and critizism you can draw from it.

oh god the tree octopus is going to kill me!
well now i'm done joking
if this was tested on young kids then is obvious they would fall for it. if there were older kids or teens then that is a little scary

That reminds me of this Discovery special about the possible future evolutions of life on Earth. It said there would be elephant and squirrel like squids living in the rainforests of France...It was a strange show.

They haven't mentioned what age these children are. What are they? Children? Teenagers? I can see little kids believing in this, as this could be, to them, a very convincing site. Teens? Well, to a degree. If they really read into what the site, they'd know (the natural predator of the Tree Octopus is the Bald Eagle and Sasquatch. Come on, it's obvious it's fake).

Read the other phony creatures? The "Rock Nest Monster" made me chuckle a bit.

So it seems a scientist has done a test with a fake website about a tree octopus with very detailed info about to see if people would believe everything they read on the internet.

not only did they believe in it, they kept on believing in it even after the scientists told them the info was completely fake.
This reminds me of Scientology :p

Sad as it is, yes. More and more people have lost enough basic common sense and actual life experience to internet use as to become dependent upon it. From the belief that a "ninja-sword" can cut solid steel to not having any idea of the difference between the Vietnam war and the Korean conflict, or even a clue as to what the branches of their own government do, WAY too many "intelligent, educated and well-informed" people believe any crap they read on the internet.

The future is wild. Lol

Good show.

I don't think France still existed when they proposed the giant land squid and tree squids. I think it was all one continent again.
I barely remember it as I watched it a couple years ago on new years eve, and I was around 9 at the time.

Lol i remember i was at school and we were shown this site to show us that not all information on the information is legit. I don't see how anyone could beleive it. It's like beleiving in fairies but being educated.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA Tree octopus. Hilarious.

But I don't think this experiment is valid at all. There's almost no information: We don't know how old the kids are, we don't why they went to the site in the first place, we don't know how they were chosen...There's just not enough information. I don't buy it.
