I call bullshit on this some teachers just need to not teach as they are hurting students more then helping em and some just hate kids.

Sosa is currently drafting an apology to her teacher. At the same time though, she said her school principal, Jolene Morris, violated her privacy by ordering her to log into her Facebook account at a school library computer. Morris then reportedly read the offending post and ensuing responses from friends before ordering Sosa to delete the posts.
I have no idea if that's legal in the US, but it sure as hell isn't right.
It's not. At all. On both counts.

I smell a lawsuit... :p

So you're saying that I am wrong and it's completely wrong to assume that they did anything wrong with just two honor students' accusations, however it's totally fine to not investigate anything at all and just punish the two honor students.
Yes, you're wrong for using the moronic phrase "No smoke without fire"...if the students had continued to press the issue, instead of realizing their mistake then an investigation would be warranted, but that's clearly not the case since you know, when they had the chance to accuse the personnel again - they didn't.

All I hear about is people getting in trouble because of their Facebook. Arrested, expelled, fired, excommunicated, etc. Yet its user base continues to grow daily.

Bullshit, the rule was obviously made with intention toward actual false reports, not facebook shenanigans. Whoever made the call is a fucking retard.
This. Sure it wasn't a tasteless act and the posts should have been deleted, HOWEVER, the student should have gotten a chance to apologize. I could see how a suspension could be warranted, but not expulsion.

Firstly i don't see how anyone can be suspended based on "what they said on Facebook", or what they said anywhere, for that matter. Secondly, i don't see how many people on this thread seem to think it is normal for it to be any of the schools business what the students say about their teachers. Any person should have the right to go up to someone else and say "This is exactly what i think of you...", as long as they don't start harassing the other person.

that's what you get for accepting every single person who sends you a friend request.

This is retarded. Yeah, the students weren't too bright, but they're fucking kids, they're supposed to be retarded.

They say this kind of shit about their teachers ALL THE TIME. I don't see why they'd get suspended for it just because it's on Facebook.

If that ever happened to me, I'd prolly move to another school and set their cars on fire. But, of course, I wouldn't be so reckless as to post that on Facebook.

Back in school I once said "Man, Mr. X sure is an asshole" only to find that said teacher stood right behind me.
I had to spend the afternoon cleaning shit. And you know what? I deserved it.

What's the difference between being overheard during a conversation and having your facebook feed read?
There is none.
This has nothing to do with free speech or anything, insulting an authority figure was never a smart idea and always ended badly.
Too many spoiled brats these days seem to forget that a teacher is a superior, not some dick who "makes your life hell".

Not to mention that calling a teacher in public (that's what the internet is) a paedophile is slander, which, as far as I know, isn't covered by "Free Speech" even in the USA.

No offense but it DOES ruin a teacher's reputation and it DOES cause harm later down the line, imagine if a teacher was looking for a new job and his employer finds that message from a student calling their teacher a pedophile, that could probably hurt more then just one suspension.

In my opinion, I support the teachers on this one, it would've been alright if the student said something like, "I THINK this guy is a pedophile" or just, "In my opinion, this guy is a massive asshole" because that's just stating your opinion, but when you out right say, "This guy is a pedophile" that's alleging something and harming a persons' reputation.
It wasn't a message to the guy and there has been no formal comment made, it's just kids joking amongst themselves. It is going to be taken as seriously as kids writing on desks for crying out loud. It CAN ruin lives, I know that but it hasn't at all. If anything it has raised more issues because it's now getting news coverage. If he'd just left it nobody would have been any the wiser, but now employers are going to find this news story which is something much more credible. What's more a suspension is official unlike a facebook status.

What's more, qualifying statements with "I think" all the time is ridiculous and a point I've made all the time on here. If I say a game is good I mean I think it's good. If somebody asks you what you think of somebody and you say "he's an arsehole" you obviously mean "I think he's an arsehole" and obviously don't mean that he is literally an arsehole. People don't need to justify everything with THIS IS AN OPINION, NOT ABSOLUTE FACT.

I don't see why it's any different if the kid had said "I think he's a pedo" rather than "he's a pedo", either way, by your argument, a future employer is going to see them as the same. Although in my opinion (IT'S MY OPINION) he isn't going to see it as anything REMOTELY significant.

Well, one is on school grounds, the other isn't. One is in private, the other isn't.
Authority in the sense that they are a teacher, they have no true authority.
Superior? No. Tell that to a substitute that randomly got pissed at me and broke a projector and proclaimed to the class "look at what you made me do!". :/ I was this [___] close to telling him "fack you". Superior, teachers are not.

So... if I tell someone in a private place that XXXXXXXX is an asshole, that isn't private because it is the internet? Privacy of belief, 1st Amendment covered.

If stupidity is grounds for expulsion; the idiot needs to go find another school.

Just because you are a teacher doesn't absolve you of being an ass. I'm currently a college student and up until last semester I was going to be a highschool teacher. Several of the students I met in teacher certification classes... well...I wouldn't want them to be my teacher, let's put it that way.

No it's not an easy job, it's thankless and you're never going to make any real money at it, but that's the choice you have to make. Many teachers treat their students poorly because of this, giving out unfair punishments, abusing their students, and being lackluster in their teaching and that's not right.

I think the students used harsh words and no they shouldn't have posted that on facebook because they are accusing the teacher of serious things here with no proof so yes they deserve punishment (though maybe not expelling). At the same time though the school is esentially saying "you are not allowed to have an opinion of our teachers unless it is good" which is ridiculous.

If a teacher is even suspected of being a pedo or rapist or whatever their career WILL be ruined forever, no school will ever hire them again even if they can prove it was a false accusation.

This is true. I had a Math teacher who did not give a damn about her job. She hunched while she walked and even looked the part. Life was not going her way and was a generally awful person.
That said; I wouldn't slander her over the internet for all to see. That's between me and an idle conversation with friends at lunch time.

Yeah, you might not want to call someone something like that unless they actually are. Generally causes shit to go down.
