I believe I'm seeing an addmittance to add blockers. That's against forum rules.
What? It is? Why!? (Unsure if I use them myself. I'll check.)
Just treat them like Fight Club.

Rule 1) Don't talk about ad blockers
Rule 2) DON'T TALK ABOUT AD BLOCKERS.

Strictly speaking, escapist can't dictate what you are allowed to install on your computer. Whatever web browser and addons you wish to use is entirely your own choice. HOWEVER, escapist does have the right to police what is said on their site. And if you advocate the use of certain programs (which we won't mention by name) then they can punish you in accordance with the rules.

As for the actual Topic: riding on the back of a motorcycle is commonly referred to as "sitting/riding *****" (kinda like the middle seat of a car.) So the commercial is making fun of a guy sitting there, on a baby-blue (or was it teal?) scooter. With bonus points for him clinging on tightly (as if scared) while not moving.

I'm not sure what Freud would say about the proposed solution to being "un-manly" .... here, shove this long meat-stick in your mouth. That will make you a man!

Way too many people on this site let their oversensitive, sheltered nature completely block any chance of simple levity passing their guard.

Not everything is meant to be taken seriously.
I was under the same impression.

It's an ad for Slim Jims, nothing to get excited about.

I'm borrowing someone's apple laptop, so naturally I'm using the Safari and not able to block ads. This is a big problem, because my Escapist videos are all preceded by stupid, unstoppable adverts.
You know that using adblockers can get you a suspension on this site, right?
I didn't technically admit to using ad blockers, if it is really an issue...I've never heard of it before.
Well, maybe you could've, oh I don't know, read the forum rules?

Also, this is the internet. Out of the m/b/trillion sexist things on it, why get worked up about a harmless Slim Jim ad?
I'm personally pissed off because I've had to watch them about 100 times between TV, The escapist, and that guy with the glasses. Honestly with the weekly "men are the targets of sexist double standards" we have been having, I'm surprised the escapist is taking the "He is less of a man for doing that" route. Fucking hypocrites aren't very consistent with there ideals.
<link=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.313743-Do-people-seriously-not-understand-why-the-Escapist-protects-their-ads-Warning-Ranty-text-wall>I'll re-rant as much as I have to...

It probably hurts them even more than it hurts you.
I agree, I'm not going to leave the site over slim jim nor am I going to block the ads. I hate it when people compiling about people make money, Its how the world fucking works people. If they don't like capitalism, they can move to China.

It feels like I'm advertising nothing at all! Nothing at all! Nothing at all!

OT:Yeah I don't really have anything to say, that title just made me think of The Simpsons. Although I haven't actually seen that ad.

Okay, I am getting a smorgasbord of responses, raining from "calm down", to "meh, let it go", to "yes, this is totally sexist", to "WARNING: NO REFERENCES TO ADBLOCKING ALLOWED".

Interesting. I guess a lot of it comes from cultural perceptions of scooters. In the UK, they are associated with school kids and chavs who can't drive proper bikes yet, but they aren't really a symbol of effeminate behaviour.

Well it's more of the fact that it's a scooter rather than she's driving. The ads are stupid, and sexist. What can you do? /shrugs

Still doesn't make much sense though. If he was riding the scooter, alongside a bunch of Hell's Angels, then maybe it would make sense, but it ain't his bike. It belongs to a girl he is getting a life from. So even going along with the vehicular obligations men seem to have to abide to, it still doesn't make much sense.

They're called Slim Jims.

I think it's more about the fact that he is riding on a scooter rather than her driving. A scooter is far, FAR, from manly and no man in his right mind would ever get on one. Unless he really had to.
How DARE you. Scooter is very manly! [http://www.co-optimus.com/images/upload/image/2010/borderlands-scooter.jpg]

OT: Wow, talk about overreacting. You're busy ripping it to shreds and talking about sexism because of a mildly amusing advertisement. Just chill.

I'm much more offended by sexist cleaning/cooking advertisements that always seem to depict a woman using their product. Isn't it 2011 already? Men can use a flippin' mop.

You're absolutely right - it is indeed a very sexist advert.

Of course, I think that's the point - being stupid and sexist to shock people into paying attention.

It is the point, you don't think the Dos Equis commercials have tinges of sexism, or the Old Spice commercials? Or any other product targeted at a young male audience? The commercials are intended to be humorous, especially at this point in time where stand up comedians (who very, very commonly tell sexist, chauvinistic, rude, racist, homophobic, heterophobic, and otherwise offensive jokes) get primetime television shows. It's supposed to be funny and appeal to the part of our humor where we might have a "shocked that someone would even say that" laugh.

Some people might think this isn't much different than the old cigarette ad's back in the day that were intentionally perpetuating gender role sterotypes with a straight face. But they are in fact quite different as they have more than obvious sarcastic overtones.

To an extent, you're right, but a) women are way more likely to end up in house wife roles than men, b) just featuring a woman doing the house work doesn't suggest that men shouldn't do the same, and c) at least in the UK, we have adverts like Mr Muscle, Daz, and CILLIT BANG which traditionally feature men doing the washing up.

Who cares, really? Yes it's inane and sexist. But many people still think that way, or they wouldn't publish an ad like that. I have to say I hate scooters, but riding one doesn't make you a girl, it just makes you look dumb, male or female, ahahaha.

Frankly, the Escapist's warnings against users for using blockers just piss me the hell off. Any company that is so fond of owing its contributors rather than paying them is suffering from bigger systemic financial problems than loss of revenue due to adblockers, and their comments and rules on the matter sound like nothing so much as the RIAA's insistence that piracy is the sole cause of failure to make a quarterly profit.
/clap

and also a /clap for whoever pointed out the freudian implications of becoming more manly by shoving a meat stick in your mouth.
