So this isn't a part of the national Communist conspiracy to sap and impurify our bodily fluids? [cookie for reference]
OT: *Gasp* Conspiracy theorists were WRONG!? My mind has been blown! I never would've guessed...

..Never heard about this until now. Oh well, no concerns, it seems.

Though as much as I'd admit I'd love a little doom-by-asteroid scenario sometime in Earth's history (after watching movies such as Deep Impact and Armageddon), I also realize we humans are also stupidly unprepared to even try to stop a planet devastating asteroid from impacting Earth and killing us all without a chance in the state many of our space programs are in..

Elenin had a close encounter with the sun on September 10th. Pieces of a comet break off. It takes roughly 8 minutes for the light from the sun to reach earth. Elenin was discovered December 10, 2010. 12 + 10 + 2010 = 2032. 2032 divided by 8 = 254. 254. Remember the 2. The 2 is important. 5 - 4 = 1. 10 + 1 = 11. September 11. 2 towers fell on September 11. It all adds up, man. It's all there.

Terrorists are controlling comets.

Yeesh, I forgot how cranky people get when you say you didn't read something. Let me clarify. My thought process went something like this:

"Sure, doomsday. Yet another giant object in space that's going to hit us... eventually. Probably long after our species has gone extinct. Don't see why this is thread-worthy. I'm going to stop reading now, and comment on the only thing of any interest in this post: the fact that certain people need to learn what 'conspiracy' means, in order to avoid creating posts with misleading names. Here I was thinking Buzz Aldrin punched another moon landing denier in the face, or something; now that is something I would have liked to hear about. But this? This is pointless and dumb."

Y'all happy now? Gonna quit quoting me and calling me a douche? Or did I just make it worse?

Yes, that comet disintigrated and totally missed the Earth, but do you know the REAL reason why?? The SECRET mission that was launched in May by the Underworld OVERLORDS from their CIA launch tubes at the HAARP facility on Alaska?? How they incorporated secret ALIEN technology into their comet-smasher?? And how it was all FORETOLD in the MAYAN CODEX and the book of REVELATION???

CONSPIRACY!!

I don't care that you didn't read it, I got annoyed because you're an example of how much this forum is beginning to suck. Ergo, by berating people for the tiniest of mistakes and just generally declaring threads worthless for no real reason.
To be honest I don't even think a lot of users here realise they're doing it, maybe it's just a conformity thing. Either way, it happens and it's really starting to wear thin.

Hmmm... I did kind of do that, huh? Whoops. That was likely out of disappointment at the thread not being what I had hoped (see previous post regarding face-punches). Though I guess this thread may actually be interesting to some people.

[sub][sub][sub]Boring people... :p[/sub][/sub][/sub]

But for the sake of discussion, I'd always thought the the real reason these forums sucked was because of how immensely self-important everyone was. "I'm special because ______! Love me!"

And the angst. Oh, god, the angst.

I wish I could "like" Escapist comments...

And also "dislike", so I could show what I think of the huge amount of hostility in this thread towards the OP. He misused a term, why is this the new topic of the thread?
Because 'conspiracy' was a pretty major part of his post. If he doesn't know what he's typing, maybe he should break his keyboard in half and go read a dictionary or something.

Also, when people type in caps, they look like dickheads, so hate will be forthcoming.

I can understand why he got flamed. The nail that stands out gets hammered!

Wouldn't be the end of the world no matter where it hit but if it really IS going to impact in the pacific ocean I'd hate to be living on the west coast.

Yea...chances are very low/.
You have NO idea how awesome that looked when viewed in the PM quote window. The head came from under the right panel.

Also, I'm thankful I'm a SG-1 fan, because that picture of an angry dude's head with a swimmers cap would have made NO sense what so ever.

Actually, he uses the word "conspiracy" twice in the first post. Granted, one of them was in the title, in caps, but I think the main gist of the post was supposed to be "this comet is not going to wipe out life on Earth". That doesn't really give very much discussion value, but that's another argument entirely.

Also that final quote sounds like something out of a dystopia novel. Which I can see was probably intentional, but still, it's slightly scary.

You're stupid, it's clearly the government that are controlling them! They want to use the comets to raise ...comet tax on the middle class!

OT: Anyone want to be amused: http://www.bible.ca/pre-date-setters.htm some of the end of the world predictions through out the years, there's been a LOT more but I can't find the lists I've read.

2012 is just the dumbest event ever because everything said that's gonna end the world aren't going to.

Comet? Nope there's nothing coming
Solar flares? We've been hit by the worst the sun can put out already.
Earthquake? When could anyone predict those?

Personally when the day passes I'm going to be sure to be having fun. Besides if it's not 2012 it's obviously going to be moved to 2020 or something

It's a Japanese proverb, although the wording seems to have changed over many years. I agree, it does sound pretty sinister!

Props to you for trashing conspiracy theorists so badly. There's enough trouble in life without people jerking off about 2012 etc
2012 generally is not a conspiracy theory. It's a doomsday myth.

Unless it's some coverup by groups CONSPIRING to some end, it's probably not a CONSPIRACY theory.

Granted, we could use fewer doomsday prophets, too.

Quick guide:

Moon Landing faked: Conspiracy theory.
2012: Doomsday myth.
JFK assassination: Conspiracy theory.
Apophis: Doomsday myth.
9-11 was an inside job: Conspiracy theory.
Yellowstone will supervolcano any day now: Well, kind of both. While it's true Yellowstone's on top of a caldera, anyone preaching knowledge of when it will erupt is flat-out wrong, and probably preaching a doomsday myth. However, there is also a conspiracy theory that such knowledge is being purposefully withheld and/or suppressed.
Solar flares inverting the Earth's poles: Doomsday myth
Men In Black: Conspiracy theory.
New World Order/Jews control X: Conspiracy theory
Haley's Comet: Doomsday myth.
Obama is a Secret Muslim planted in this country at birth: Conspiracy theory.

Sorry, that's all that sprung to mind. There's millions of them, and while they can coincide, the terms are not interchangeable.
So, yes. Doomsday myth. All agreed that we'll use this word instead. Yay!

This won't phase them. It never has, and it never will. When one of their many, many predictions falls flat, they'll just make a new one. "Planet Niberu" was supposed to hit Earth in 2003. When that didn't happen, they shifted it to 2006 and some shifted it to 2012. When it fails to hit in 2012, they'll either claim that aliens saved us, NASA blew it up (somehow), or that they were a "little off" in their calculations and that some NEW prophecy (maybe from the Aztecs or Nostrodamus) predicts that the world will end in 2020 or some other suitably just-far-off enough date to provoke panic, but which leaves enough time to sell books.

Because, as you might have guessed, many of these conspiracy theory/Doomsday propagandists don't believe their own nonsense. You know how many silly 2012 doomsday books are out there? A LOT. You know how much money the authors make? A LOT. There is a commercial angle to these dooms-day prophecies, which ensures that they'll keep making up new ones to write new books about and the gullible suckers who fell for it the first time will keep coming back and buying their books because they want to feel a glimmer of excitement in their life. Conspiracy theories make people feel smart, they make them feel special, like something is going to happen and they know it while the rest of us "Sheeple" don't.

So combine the lucrative market, with the sense of superiority many conspiracy theorists feel, and the cognitive dissonance they experience when the prediction fails and what do you get? Believers. Believers who will NEVER stop believing in conspiracy theories or dooms-day prophecies, because to stop believing is to admit that they WERE crazy or gullible, and they will NEVER, EVER DO THAT. It would wound their pride too much.

I predict three things:

1) The Conspiracy theorists who claimed that Elenin would hit earth will simply move the date and claim that they never said it would hit in 2011.
2) Or, they'll claim that Elein DIDN'T break up, that it's a "NASA lie" or some other such nonsense, and that the comet is still going to hit us.... any day now.... soon..... just wait.... it's coming closer.... it'll hit....we're sure of it.... just hold on... any moment now... until the sheer embarrassment will force them to be silent for a week or two, before they trot out yet another "doomsday" asteroid the "Illuminati" are hiding from us.
3) They'll say that NASA contacted the Aliens from Mars-Atlantis who, in co-operation with bigfoot (who was the REAL assassin who killed JFK), the illuminati, the freemasons, used the hidden perpetual-motion-cold-fusion device that the Oil Companies (who are controlled by the space reptiles who also control the UK Monarchy) are hiding from us, to blow up Elenin. But even if they saved us, it's all for nothing because of the CHEM-TRAILS they are spreading from the planes to brainwash us ALL. WAKE UP SHEEPLE! GRAB YOUR TIN FOIL HATS! THE CONSPIRACY IS DEEPER THAN WE HAD EVER FEARED! HIDE! HIDE IN THE MOUNTAINS! THEY'RE GONNA PUT CHIPS IN OUR BRAAAAAAAIIINNNNNS!!!

EDIT: It's also right to call these people conspiracy theorists, as many of them believe there is a Conspiracy by NASA, JAXA, The Russians, the Brazillians, and indeed, every single country with a telescope or radio-array to "hide" the "Truth" from us. They might also believe in a dooms-day prophecy, but many of them are also conspiracy theorists who believe that there is a government "cover-up".
