The Three Musketers By Alexander Dumas is a good classic worth of reading.
Then on sci-fi front I personally have fallen in love with the Culture series by Iain M. Banks. Consider Phlebas and Use Of Weapons are good ones to begin with from there.
On Fantasy, Discworld books by Pratchett are nice. For a bit younger audience there is always the Belgariad by Eddings.
Also, by Raymond E. Feist, the Riftwar series beginning with the Magician is nice one.
On action/suspense, I'd mention Higgings as a good writer and MacLean as excellent. The Ice Station Zebra by MacLean is a book I shall always treasure.
Then we have Turms the Immortal (also goes by the name The Etruscan) by Mika Waltari. A true classic, historic fantasy novel about a guy named Turms travelling all over the Mediterranean around 500 BC. It's fantasy in the sensa that for example Venus, the goddess of love has actual power and other myths and legens of the era are considered true.
