AMERICAN GODS- Neil Gaiman
Neil Gaiman is a must read.

Books of his to read are Netherwhere, Anansi Boys and Stardust. If your into childrens books try Coraline and The Graveyard Book. Plus, if you like comic books, you most definitly need to read The Sandman. He also does several books of short storys, such as Smoke & Mirrors and Fragile Things.

Anyway, other books I'd recommend are:

Flowers for Algernon

His Dark Materials (best childrens trilogy ever)

The Knife of Never Letting Go and The Ask and the Answer (soon to be the best childrens trilogy ever once book 3 is released)

The Hitch Hickers Guide to the Galaxy: a trilogy in five parts

Animal Farm

Lord of the Flies

Of Mice and Men

His Dark Materials (greatest book EVER written IMO... unless you're religious)
Also anything written by either Dean Koontz or Stephen King (horror/sci-fi/fantasy)

Oi! I found The Road! Gonna read it soon :D
Sweet! And also, you should read American Psycho if you have the chance. If you haven't seen the film or know the general story line then it is brilliantly devilish.

=O The Twilight Books!

JK, I would never torture you so.
The Wheel of Time books are rather good, and the newest [#12] is coming on 9/22. There are going to be 14 in total, the last 3 are being written by a different author, as Robert Jordan died before he could complete the 12th book that was sopost to complete the series.

I'll be the third to suggest Neil Gaiman, and anything by him for that matter. He's an easy read for the most part, but well worth it as well. Hell he even did a few Batman comic stories if my memory serves me well...

There's a series of books (kind of) by Ian Irvine. I'm not sure how popular they are but I can find them in Waterstones. The first lot is called.. oh bugger. The SECOND lot however are called the 'Well of Echoes Quartet' and then he's still writing the 'Song of the Tears' books. They're very very well-written fantasy novels and not too obtuse, with great characters and battles, plus proper emotion. They might actually be my favourite books of all time.

The quality of those books dropped seriously after Faith of The Fallen *glares at The Pillars of Creation*

I would reccommend The Malazan Book of The Fallen series by Steven Erikson. I've never felt more immersed in a world or cared more for a group of characters than in those books.

I came in thinking of Neverwhere by Gaiman. Though I haven't read everything by him he is easily one of the better authors these days.

Heart of Darkness - Joseph Conrad
Picture of Dorian Gray - Oscar Wilde
Old Man & The Sea - Ernest Hemingway
In Our Time - Ernest Hemingway
Waiting for Godot - Samuel Beckett

If you like historical fiction, I heartily recommend the Flashman series. Unless you like your protagonists to be heroes as opposed to utter lucky bastards, who happen to be very funny.
