Saw.
Thought it was gonna be a substandard Gore fest. The I found a real Phycho-Distubing Plot with great acting and a genuinely jaw dropping twist.
On the opposite end of the spectrum I walked into Saw2 expecting much of the same. I got exactly what I expected from the first movie ¬¬...

The Clone Wars animation movie was better than expected... actionwise, anyway...
Of course the animated character had better facial expression than Hayden.

I thought that Slumdog Millionaire was ridiculously overhyped...until I saw it.

That was one HELL of a movie.

Snakes on a Plane.
What? It was a good movie.

OK, seriously... Fight Club. I thought that was going to be relatively boring but it's one of my favourite movies now.

(500) days of summer and the new G.I Joe movie were surprisingly good. Also one night my friends rented a documentary called "American Pimps" that was surprisingly awesome.

I really enjoyed The Last Kiss and I absolutely hate romantic comedies. Zach Braff was pretty good in it.

I've got a couple to say here:

I'm not a big horror movie fan, so when someone made me sit down and watch Resident Evil, I was expecting it to suck.

I now own the first two on DVD, and would own #3 (which I have yet to finish unfortunately, the rental was badly damaged), but I couldn't find it at Fry's when I had the money to spend on it.

Uhm... What was the oth-AUGUST RUSH.

Seriously. My sister, mom, dad, and grandma loved the movie, and what they described made me go "Ew, great. Sappy movie. LAAAAAAAME."

Then they made me sit and watch it.

It's the ONLY movie that's ever made me pick up my guitar and start working out ORIGINAL pieces of music, and it's the reason I've picked up finger picking. Unfortunantly, I'm not a savant, and I don't understand music, so I'm forced to go by ear and play what sounds good.

[edit]Phantom of the Opera was really good too, GREAT swordfight in that movie, and the vocalists are all top-notch.

BEE Movie
That wasn't as childish as i thought.
Agreed. I thought it would just be another bugs life rip off, but it was actually quite smart and funny! Same with Meet the Robinsons. It looked like another annoying kids movie, but it was a really good movie! I don't know why ive only listed kids movies. Perhaps its because I've expected them to be terrible and some of them are actually quite good

I won't say anything except watch it. Don't let the title fool you into thinking it's some kind of Barbie movie. It's one of the best movies I ever saw.

Dark City.

Just saw it recently and it was awesome. Think Matrix meets Enemy of the State meets Jacob's Ladder meets Hellraiser.

well i forgot to post mine so here it is:

Hot Fuzz...i watched it on TV just to pass the time thinking it'd be some unfunny comedy junk that's around these days, and walked out of my lounge room thinking 'I MUST HAVE THIS' (i've watched it 16 times since)
If you liked that movie watch Shaun of the Dead. It's by the same creators of Hot Fuzz. It's hilarious. :D
They are going to make another movie similar to Shaun of the Dead and Hot fuzz but I have no idea when they are making it. From what my friend told me they are going to call it the Cornetto series because in both movies the secondary character is always eating a different kind of ice cream. Cool avatar. :)

I've been involved in two stage productions of this and I have to say...not my favorite.

Fight Club. I thought it looked really stupid and was way overhyped until I saw it. I then promptly bought the DVD and added it to my collection.

Slumdog Millionaire was definitely another... I saw the trailer and felt utterly bored. After watching the movie, I exited the cinema in tears.

Watchmen was pretty good as well. I was expecting a steaming pile of shit when it came out, but it was much better than I expected.

Paul Blart: Mall Cop was a lot better than I thought it would be. Okay fine, not saying much, but it actually made me laugh at a few jokes. Also the camera and light work is pretty impressive when it comes to making fat guy go from loser to heroic in the span of a movie.

Punch Drunk Love. A Romantic Comedy with Adam Sandler? Yeah, that's what I thought. Now one of my favourite films of all time.
It also got me to watch Boogie Nights which I was put off because I figured it would be some kind of Saturday Night Fever, boy was I wrong.

I too was surprised by Slumdog Millionaire simply because it was billed as the Feel good movie of the year.

300, I though it was just going to be really mindless violence. Which it was but it was fun to watch and didn't bore like some others.
